There’s a fan theory I like that Buscemi’s character never killed anyone, he simply acted crazy to keep himself safe in prison, as he’s obviously not a physically intimidating guy, so he needed a way to keep himself safe.
@mckenzie.latham91
@mckenzie.latham91 2 года назад
Except it falls through when you realize even the guards and the prison were treating him that way No way the prison system wouldn't have corrected that misconception and no one is putting someone in that many restraints, on that kind of flight for anything other than the crimes he was accused of There’s no way the guards and prison system are also in on that con, which is why it doesn’t hold up.

I skimmed the comments and didn't see anyone really explaining this: due to Cameron's specialized military training, he is held to a higher standard for self-restraint. He was convicted of manslaughter (not murder) because he should have had enough control to defend himself in a brawl without using lethal force. Normally, the fact that the man pulled a knife (escalating a brawl into a fight for his life) would have supported a self-defense plea, but if you watch carefully, one of the bystanders takes the knife, so there's no proof Cameron was ever in fear for his life. It seems his lawyer advised him to plead guilty for a shorter sentence, but the judge gave him a lengthier sentence anyway, because it's implied he has a history of violence on his record.
@Chiller1967
@Chiller1967 3 года назад
That is good movie logic but in the law doesnt work like that. The fact that their was more than one assailant is enough disparity of force to justify self defense no matter what his training is. It also doesnt explain why he is being charged in Federal court and sent to Federal prison. The crime would have been a state crime if any.
@swaswj414
@swaswj414 3 года назад
@@Chiller1967 Federal court gives an excuse to put him in a prison in a completely different state, I guess. Self-defense law is full of gray areas and unclear distinctions in the US, and in the 90s in Alabama, citizens had a legal 'duty to retreat' except in certain circumstances. Remember that Cameron was not actually attacked -- he was threatened, and chose to escalate the situation into a fight, while his wife pleads with him to just get in the car. The knife that made him react with deadly force was taken and no witnesses were around to see it because his wife left to get help. It may be movie logic, but given the poor lawyering and the vindictive judge it's not actually that far off the mark. Even so, you can definitely see that the writers started from "good guy in prison during escape attempt" and worked their way backward to find a way to put him there. My point was only that the movie did show us what was happening and that it wasn't completely arbitrary.
@EScoglio

I honestly think about 50% of everything Nic Cage says in this movie is hilarious because of that accent. It's impossible to take anything he says serious and I do love it. I think my favorite story about this movie is from Danny Trejo who said that on the entire set, the craziest guy was John Cusack which is not the answer I would have expected given the insane people in this movie.

Everyone I've talked to that has seen this movie said there is no reason he should have went to prison in the first place. For crying out loud he was assaulted by four men, and the one he killed had a knife. Of course I realize this is Hollywood and not to be taken too seriously but this plot point would certainly not work today if they remade this movie. Having said that, I still loved the movie and have seen it several times.

I like the movie, but the beginning really seems unrealistic. The main character was acting in self defense. The offenders were well aware that he was trained by his obvious uniform. I think a better case could have been made in court to begin with. The man in question who died was attacking him with two other dudes and a broken beer bottle. It was already a life or death situation. I know this is a movie. Just a movie. My bad.

Love your reactions as always! I always enjoyed this movie even though I’m NOt an action fan AT ALL. I actually disagree with you, in that I DO think this movie has quite a bit of comedic vibe and does NOT take itself seriously at all, which is what I always loved about it. I think the planning for the movie went something like this “ OK guys let’s see if we can make a movie, I’m let’s see how many explosions we can fit in two hours lol” Steve Buscemi actually did I think a really great job as Garland green. I actually love his character. He supposed to be the worst of the worst, but yet he really actually does nothing the entire movie!!! He doesn’t even help the bad guys he just kind of sits and watches everything and delivers some great funny lines. They even make it obvious that he didn’t hurt the little girl by showing her waving to the plane after Steve Buscemi gets back on. And I love how it ends showing that he is loose in Vegas.. Not that he should be free!! it’s possible he’s ready to start another horrible crime spree.. but it’s an interesting way to end the movie because he is kind of a likable character despite it all. Fun movie, fun reaction.. keep doi

It is highly,highly highly unlikely that you would be found guilty in that situation. It is not even likely that you would be charged in most instances especially a highly decorated soldier. That is not to say if you get bad District Attorney and a bad Judge and a crappy defense lawyer it could not happen. That said even if it did I dont see how it would be a federal crime it would be a state crime unless maybe it happened on federal land or some circumstance like that.
