Paul, in my opinion, the advantage of the extreme defense bullet design is exactly what you showed. Reliable real world performance such as shown on your meat target but most importantly, zero need to rely on expansion. A hollow points performance, albeit critical defense or whatever, is mostly reliant on it expanding as designed. If it doesn’t, you may have pass thru or damage inadequacies. Yes, you may have to adjust your sights for a different point of aim but the extreme defender bullet design eliminates the worry of wondering if it’s going to expand properly. It doesn’t need to
@Bsquared1972
@Bsquared1972 2 года назад
I would add the meat target does not simulate a closed body with fluid. The damage cavities inflicted on ballistic gel with the Underwood ammo is pretty impressive. Loved the video!
@aaa8509
@aaa8509 2 года назад
As someone who has used hollow point ammunition in self defense... I very much appreciated the fact all of my bullets stopped in my target and didn't pass through to the park time with children behind my home. Though my experience is it really doesn't matter if there is expansion or not just so long as it hits and doesn't keep going. This lady one the mother fucker somehow survived after getting shot in the chest twice, part of the second bullet even hot his heart and the first hit his bladder and intestines.... Never forget the idiot dumb enough to fuck with you when he knows you havea gun is almost certainly high as fuck on drugs... Bullets don't stop someone with an overdose of fentynl and methamphetamines in his system but it will make that mother fucker run the fuck away.
@LibertysetsquareJack

The HPs (Speer Gold Dot and FTX) will work with bodily fluids too though. You don't need flutes to push fluid. Really though, our bodies are not like water jugs or gelatin blocks. The amount and distribution of fluid in lung tissue, for example, is analogous to the amount and distribution of fluid in the tangerines, much more than it would be like a jug of water. Regarldess, the Speer and the FTX both exhibited more damage in this test than both FTM loadings did, so with extra fluid in the equation, that would mean either the HPs would do still more damage than they did, or the FTM bullets would only do greater damage to the point they were ay the level of the Speer GD and Hornady FTX in Paul's test. On the other hand, FTM style (fluted) bullets will not expand, period: a HP may have poor expansion on a particular shot, but it will never shrink smaller than the size of the FTM bullet, which is a solid, mono-metal projectile. So I don't really see what the advantage to be had is using the FTM bullets, especially in something such as 44 SPL, where velocities are well under 1,500 fps. Even taking the marketing hype concerning the flutes and "hydraulic pressure" at face value, basic physics would tell us that velocities would need to be quite high to develop enough energy to dump out as hydraulic force, so as to have an effect comparable to a larger projectile.

.44 Special always seemed to have a great reputation in standard loading from the early years on up to WWII. Skeeter Skelton had a soft spot for it post WWII. Sending a 246 grain bullet down range at 700-800 fps doesn’t sound that impressive, but it is still throwing a respectable sized chunk of lead. This was an informative video.

Meat targets aside, how these monolithic Philips-nosed projectiles would perform on the cavity of a deer or a human, seem to be the same or better in gel test comparisons. In other words, when FLUIDS come into the equation (not tangerines) where substantial hydraulic dynamics could be part of the terminal effect, I think they'd work just fine. I think they'd work almost as well as an expanding projectile while penetrating just as well as a WFN non-expanding solid copper or hard cast load. But hey, none of this stuff has emotional investment. We're just comparing terminal ballistics of various bullet types.

@upinarms79
@upinarms79 2 года назад
They're in the same vein of "self-defense" ammo as many other specialty ammo makers. Usually drastically over-priced for about half the amount of ammo you'd normally get and they use a lot of buzz words and print a bunch of ballistics on their websites and boxes to try to convince you that it's worth the price. You're better off spending that money on some quality bullets and reloading supplies and just make your own if you're concerned about good ammo for self-defense. At least then you know for sure you've used quality components and don't have to spend a mint to just to shoot 25 or so at the range and can actually test how well they work.

Years ago in the 90's I was doing a lot of outdoor things, and also handloading. I found the .44 Special very useful and easy to load for. I almost exclusively loaded a 240 grain cast semi-wadcutter bullet and just varied the powder charge. With 6 grains of Unique I had a very soft shooter for practice at about 800 fps, and I could shoot a rabbit or squirrel with very little meat damage. I also loaded the classic Skeeter Skelton load of 7.5 grains of the same powder that gave me about 1,000 fps. Since I was carrying a .44 Magnum revolver at the time, I simply loaded the hotter rounds seated out to the second grease groove, so that I had a quick visual reference to which was which. I shot several Virginia white tail deer with the 7.5 grain load, and they dropped like a stone. I always felt that I would be pretty well protected against two-legged varmints with this load as well. But try as I might, I couldn't find any really good factory ammo until I came across a CCI Blazer load with a 200 grain jacketed hollow point. It worked well out of my 4-inch Model 29 so I kept a box on hand. But mostly I liked the .44 Special as an outdoors round with my hand loads because the Model 29 was just too big for daily carry. I did fool around a bit with a Rossi 5-shot stainless revolver with a 3-inch barrel with the CCI Blazer load that worked okay, but not really better than one of my K frame S&W's with .38 or .357 loads that carried an extra shot, so I soon lost interest in this setup in .44 Special as a defense gun.

@@GunFunZS Sectional density doesn’t change with speed, it’s just projectile mass per unit area of cross sectional area. Low sectional density is alway bad for penetration- You’d have to push a 125 gr bullet pretty dang fast at that diameter to get good reliable penetration. Maybe it works ok with those copper solids, but I’d need some calibrated gel tests to prove it. 😆

@@jpoeng no one asserted that sectional density does change with speed. But performance does. I think your error is conflating sectional density to terminal effect. This style of bullet tends to work well when it's moving quite fast. Going slow It does basically the same as an FMJ.

@@GunFunZS Ok, yeah, I don’t disagree. But I’m saying that with the energy available to it in this caliber, I just don’t see the concept working well here. Ok Paul, I deeply respect your knowledge and the content/quality of your videos, along with the respective topics being discussed. Moreover, you're a fellow Jarhead brother as well, BUT your channel is a gun channel. As such, politics CANNOT be avoided. Everything related to firearms is political, just like every other "hot button" issue in America. Additionally, I know you live in a state that always votes "blue," but also possesses very conservative counties and country folk. Yet, I also noticed that a certain percentage of your fan base will eagerly pop off with some negative commentary about Conservatives and/or the GOP (sometimes justly deserved), strongly "implying" they may support the Democratic Party, and at the same time state they are also very "pro gun." A person could have gotten away with that 20-30 years ago, but not anytime recently. So, what point am I trying to make here? You "may" want to get "political" with your channel, because brother, every Federal Democrat is strongly anti-gun (despite their phony campaign pledges), except for maybe Senator Joe Manchin. I don't think it's too far fetched to assume that lovely old school AR15-A1 or A2 that you often employ in your videos "may" be banned in your state down the road???? I sincerely hope not, but I find it so hilarious how people from both coasts make fun or disregard the Midwest flyover country, but our states are solid when it comes to 2nd Amendment issues. Time for you to get the "Ducks" and "Beavers" to wake up!!!
