I can't thank you enough for taking the time to inspire us. Getting into this career path is by far the the most challenging feat I have ever faced. We need a pat on the back from time to time. Quick question: Do you know if it's true Riot only hires LoL player's? I've heard both, yes and no. I was about to apply, but eventually decided to hold off until I could get a solid answer. Anyway thanks again. Cheers.

It is highly advised to play LOL and know a bit about the company before applying. You don't have to be a master of the game or anything, but you should be into the product and enjoy playing. There is a super strong sense of culture in the studio.

Hi! Do you consider providing a little portfolio review? Thank you! You mentioned gdc. In the country where I'm at, we're limited to these kinds of events. We have otakus and weaboo events and it's really a killer because I'm not an anime person. Keep rockin these videos man!!!

I guess I'm lucky since I'm starting out in the modern age... I have an ArtStation and I've entered pieces in these online art contests through Discord, through which I have actually competed against real freelance artists who saw my work and I was able to converse with in the chat rooms. Some of them follow my social media here and there, and the hosts of these contests also follow me.That's not something that would have happened fifteen years ago.

Hi Rob I live in the Netherlands and is currently going to school to be a Game Artist. I want to know if it's the same thing here in the Nederlands. Do I have to know someone to get a concept Artist job?

Hi Rob! I'm trying to break into games, what's the best way to get an affordable portfolio review? I have no money to travel and I feel awful asking people for free ones online. The only other ones cost 1000$+! That's more than double my rent!

I think I met you at Lorne Lanning's studio working on Abe's Oddysee? Indeed that was a long time ago. Guess what I'm not in US anymore. I'm though back at NCsoft in S. Korea. NCsoft in LA or their members stabbed me in the back, even the recruiter got in the action. I think she's over at the studio that makes Titan Fall. Anyway, being back at NCsoft is a proof that if one has the tenacity they can pull through. Aside from knowing someone...a lot of people won't tell you is that the same people could also talk crap about you...out of spite. I've had some run-ins and some I regret but as an artist - you're pretty much on your own...that's why concept artists especially like to buddy-up with another artist or a group of artists. For the aspiring concept artists - not only do you have to have the chops....you're going to make some choices in life. This coming from someone who did concept art close to 35 years, and believe me I've seen lots of dramas during those years. Some clients don't even pay or say they don't have any money. I'm only saying this because I met Rob Brown, and he too has seen lots of crazy stuff over the years.
@RobBrownTV

Damn, that is super insightful Ed. I think you have a great point. Shit talkers get pushed out fairly quickly.. To this day I can think of people missing opportunities for a way they acted 20 years ago. Myself included. In the early years, I thought I was super cool, and it made me off putting, I missed out on a lot of buddies because I didn't have the foresight to watch my own lane, and not worry about other peoples business.

I still keep in touch with Steve Olds, one of the best concept artist I know. Too bad he's bit under the radar like few other of us. When I started out - that is before there was a term "concept artist" - the term they used before that was "illustrator" - I think with the advent of games is when the term "concept artist" came about. I didn't want fame and glory...it was just a job that was still being worked out. The money was OK, that is if you got paid at all. Another is they speak about psychos and crazies....this shouldn't just apply to concept artists...I find that derogatory - this term should also apply to companies and studio heads. One where I worked was just that....they're in Venice, CA btw. I had a huge cut in salary to work there - nearly half of what I was getting paid at Rhythm and Hues. And boy they talked shit about R&H not in front of me though....calling them 'animal farm house' since their work on talking animals. Tim Flattery is another veteran hardly being mentioned and he worked on a lot of vfx films over the years. What irks me though is calling 10+ year concept artists legends and masters is just wrong imho. Anyway, I'm glad you're still alive and kicking.

Hi I have been working on my portfolio for concept art and I'm currently trying to think about what studio I want to get into, but a lot of times I look up a Company I am interested in, it doesn't seem like they are hiring. So it gets me wondering, should I still try to shoot for that studio even though it doesn't seem like they need any more artists. If one's portfolio does become strong enough, but it obviously looks like its geared toward a specific studio, will other companies still consider that artist?
@RobBrownTV
@RobBrownTV 7 лет назад
IMO, draw in the style you love.. then do it the best possible way and share on artstation. A killer artist can make a company open up a spot for them, but the catch is that you have to be in a world class level at that style. IMO, spend all your time making the best piece, and not too much time making half pieces for a specific company. Just realize the pieces that companies are attracted to are ones that take many days or weeks to finish.

It's not too hard with a little practice. Usually, I try to ask questions about the person, and I am more careful lately to not talk about myself. ..I try to be funny, but that is risky and has caused more problems than fixed, haha.
@JonLauArt
@JonLauArt 7 лет назад
You're right. It's not hard with practice. But I find it easier to talk to people when there's some sort of common ground like an event or discussion.

Does knowing someone means being friends with them?
@RobBrownTV
@RobBrownTV 8 лет назад
+213331355 It is an odd line to distinguish for sure. I use the word friend fairly loosely. Basically if they know my name and we have gone to lunch a couple times, I would say they are a possible friend. If we have worked in the same circles but really don't talk, we are associates.

There are a few sites like that.. I personally hate a couple, but a couple are fine. I've seen my own work sold by others on some. IMO, go to where the game studios go.

"I've seen my own work sold by others on some" Do you have any legal protection in cases like that? Is it worth to sue? I always thought that selling sb's work is extreeemly risky buissnes. Thanks for your input.

Lots if people say artstation right now because of the clean ui and easy portfolio display. I also hear that employer's are looking at artstation to find new talent. Artstation also has an hire button which makes it easier to contact someone if there email is not displayed.

Okay...8:20 This topic of "carrying" oneself, and behavior....I hear this commented now and then and I kiiiiiiiiiinda understand? ? ?...... in terms of mistreating people and such. I get it. ...but the whole idea of 'don't be an a-hole' or "carry yourself well".... Every time I hear this gestured, I tend to think: isn't that an absolutely subjective concept? I've seen an entire class at a very famous art school in Sarasota turn on a girl because no one in the class liked who she voted for in politics, to the point of hate...and she was actually a pretty cool chick IMO. I was afraid to defend her because, hell, I was afraid of the class...I mean they really acted like she was an a-hole. She just disagreed. On the flip side, I have seen military personnel who fit the description of "a-hole" and yet, deep down, they would be the most dedicated person to a team. So at some point, shouldn't we stop making broad, ambiguous statements like "don't be a jerk" or an "a-hole" or "behave"? ..cause frankly, everyone has different definitions of what entails these labels. BTW, great video overall, no beating around the bush, I like that. Sadly, someone people (especially in this generation) would misjudge your confidence as fitting the not "carrying yourself" well. I would disagree with them.
@mimicatzillacatonthemounta6715
Well, i live in a country that only has one game studio that could be considered succesful and i am painfully shy which means i'll probably have to take a massive step outside my comfort zone and actually move abroad and miraculously be able to talk to people without dying inside :/
@RobBrownTV
@RobBrownTV 7 лет назад
I often feel super awkward around people, so as a kid I tried to be funny to fit in. It didnt always work, and sometimes it made things even worse haha. I feel your pain, just take some baby steps first. If you do plan to move abroad, see if there is an art group that you can talk to on Facebook first, so you are not completely alone when you land. Also, enroll in some art classes right away at the local college, you will meet people there.. and you will also meet all the other artists who feel awkward, because that is what they are doing too, haha.
