The Letter (1940) #WarnerArchive #WarnerBros #TheLetter
Six years after exploding to stardom in Of Human Bondage, Bette Davis equaled that excitement with another W. Somerset Maugham role as an adulteress using her sexual wiles to escape a murder conviction in The Letter. The film throbs with sultry tension thanks to Davis, an impeccable supporting cast, atmospheric cinematography and the artistry of three-time Academy Award® winner* William Wyler, Davis’ director on Jezebel and The Little Foxes. Nominated for seven Oscars®, including Best Picture, Actress, Director and Supporting Actor, The Letter remains one of Hollywood’s most special deliveries, a peerless example of melodrama as movie art.
Special Features: Alternate Ending Sequence; 2 Audio-Only Bonuses: Lux Radio Theater adaptation starring Davis, Marshall and Stephenson from 4/21/41 and Lux Radio Theater adaptation starring Davis and Marshall from 3/6/44; Theatrical Trailer (HD),
Directed By William Wyler

A great scene from a great film. Bette Davis was one of the finest actresses ever to grace the screens.

but I dont think she suits for the role of Leslie. Bette's demeanor is too agressive.

@@moonintaurus5918 Not entirely sure about Bette too aggressive for the part! It was essentially a melodrama, a genre of films where Bette was in her element. However, if I was pushed, I would have liked to have seen Barbara Stanwyck playing Lesley Crosbie. Stanwyck would have brought a more sinister dimension to the role of the jilted and revengeful Lesley. However, you probably know that the story was inspired by a real-life scandal involving the wife of the headmaster of a school in Kuala Lumpur who was convicted in a murder trial after shooting dead a male friend in April 1911. The real life Leslie was a one Ethel Proudlock, née Charter, a Eurasian, who married William Proudlock, acting headmaster of the prestigious Victoria Institution for boys in Kuala Lumpur, at the age of 19 in 1907.She was eventually pardoned. I read up about it. It was sad to read as husband and wife separated, she going to live in the USA with her daughter, while her husband, William Proudlock, eventually ended up teaching in Argentina.

@@geoffm9944 yes, I know W Somerset Maugham used a real crime story for "The Letter". Fun fact: "Crime and Punishment" by Dostoyevsky was also partially based on a true crime in St Petersburg.

@@moonintaurus5918 I have seen the film ‘The Letter’ and although Bette Davis was terrific, the character that stands out for me in this melodrama is James Stephenson, playing Howard Joyce, the family lawyer. His understated, calm and sensitive performance was a perfect foil to Bette Davis’s immoral, emotive and malevolent Leslie. Stephenson’s tortured expressions in the courtroom and the inner moral turmoil which he was experiencing in his final plea to the jury was both dramatic and spellbinding. Sad that within the year of the film being released, Stephenson was dead.

Interesting to compare the Jeanne Eagles version with the above. Two different styles of acting and directing. I had only read about Eagles and her problems and her reputation so it was doubly interesting to make the comparison and I now know why Eagles had such a great reputation without taking anything away from Davis' great performance.

A great scene but it also has a kind of craziness to it. She loves with all her heart the man she killed. Will she pitch a tent at his gravesite?

Bette Davis is great, but imo Jeanne Eagles did the "With all my heart" scene better. Eagles delivery is one of contempt and revenge, whereas Davis's is weepy and regretful.
