Here is Conga lesson #4.
This lesson demonstrates how to play several Jazz, Rock, Pop and Odd-Time rhythms.

i just stumbled upon your vid, GREAT, i will be back but soooooo refreshing to hear non ego, non confusing, non bull s*&^% tips and pointers. thank you. seriously. now where is the "HOW TO TUNE" your head (haha) but seriously, its my worst task after alllll theseeee yearsssss, anyway i digress, thank you . joachin in sr ca ill be baccck ...

ok im back, its again , nice to hear someone simplify the rythems , hand strokes as in the 3/4. AND i might add , you kiss, (keep it simple) dont over play it, but hey you know this of course, ok back to the you tube lesson ect, thanks again :)

@@rickdior First of all thanks !! Every day I watch lessons 1 2 3 and 4 Your version of the partido alto (lesson 3) is gorgeous! I'd like to learn a method of building that and similar grooves without slowing down the video 🤔😅 Also I would be happy to see more solo grooves to be performed on 2 congas Thank you again

Can you recommend any jazz music/releases with conga that isn't Latin jazz? Sometimes I'll catch some music that is very jazzy and it has congas in there but its not really Latin jazz. Sounds like something from the sixties/seventies maybe? I know Miles went through a period where he had a conga player and Pharoah Sanders is someone I discovered on youtube... but if you knew of any great non-latin jazz albums with conga on it that you could recommend, that would be great!

Hi One record I really like is Merry-Go-Round by Elvin Jones. They do a version of La Fiesta on there that's great. Don Alias is on congas and he is pretty much the best (in my opinion) at non-traditional conga playing in jazz and pop music. You can also hear him with pop artists like Joni Mitchell (especially the album Mingus). You can also hear him on recordings with Nina Simone, Miles, Jack DeJohnette, Roberta Flack, David Sanborn, Herbie Hancock and many others.

When you do your heel toe you seem to put some side to side motion into it. Is there a rationale for that or is it just a personal style thing?

Matt Chikudo Moore I’ve seen players do this without side to side - it’s just personal style. Do what feels best - what keeps your hands and wrists healthy and fluid is the best style!

I play a lot of other hand percussion like udu drums and frame drums so that side to side motion comes from that. It's really a matter of preference. As long as it sounds good and works for you don't worry about the side to side motion.

what is the difference between bongos and congas?

This would best be explained by doing an internet search on congas and look at some pictures. Then do the same with the bongos. The huge size difference will be obvious as well as the role they play in many types of music.
