Conleth Hill (Varys) reveals thoughts on Game of Thrones ASOIAF Lore 

I'm not sure if anyone else could have done such a phenomenal job playing Varys. I never knew Conleth Hill before Thrones but I'll never forget his Varys....i hate that they did him dirty.

D&D managed to turn one of the most intelligent and mysterious player of the game of thrones into a guy who wouldn't even be able to throw a surprise party 💀

I doubt he'll ever see this, but if Conleth Hill does see this, I want him to know that every thrones fan will NEVER see him as a failure for his character. He did amazing all series for whatever he was given.

Conleth Hill had The Best facial reactions to people's BS through the whole show. I remember there was some dramatic scene where Joffrey was yelling, and I couldn't stop laughing at Varys' look of disgust at the overgrown toddler king. I was laughing so hard I had to go back and rewatch the scene because I missed the dialog

This is actually heartbreaking to hear about. So many talented and dedicated people with a genuine love for performance and the arts worked hard to make thrones as amazing as it was. YEARS of people’s loves spent on telling a story, only for it to be run into the ground because of pride and incompetence.

D&d left GOT for a Star Wars trilogy that got cancelled in the end. What a waste

Trust me he wasn't the only cast member who was displeased with the final seasons d&d got what they deserved when star wars didn't won't them

Varys was (in my opinion) probably the character that stayed truest to the book version, in both look and mannerism. He filled his scenes with countless little quirks and gestures. My favorite was when he bent his hand back to stop the door with one finger when Tyrion threatened to throw him into the sea. I also liked the way he stroked the hand of the beggar woman with the baby. He played Varys as a kind, compassionate person and I love him for that!

The writers really screwed up some great characters at the end season 😢. It was such a letdown for such a once great show 😢

Gotta hand it to him though, he did a good job with the crap he was forced to work with

Always annoyed me how in his final scene we see him write letters about the rightful heir (Jon Snow obviously) then he his killed of and its all forgotten

It wasn't his fault that the writers screwed him, he was excellent as Varys

Same with Littlefinger... It all started with him pulling strings in almost every plot, but dying in an instant...

He did a great job playing Varys. He creeped me out at first then he grew on me and I liked him.

It's none of the actors fault they did what they could and will aways be remembered by their impeccable work in the early seasons, however the writers and HBO, those guys should be chained, fed to hounds, burned by dragons and thrown to the shivering sea

Hill did not disappoint his fans. He portrayed Varys very well. But, like everyone is disappointed in the last few seasons of thrones. But, him being Varys was never a disappointment.

That man IS Varys. He didn't let anyone down. He didn't write the script.

The showrunners wanted to wrap the show up quickly instead of doing it right so they could try and make Star Wars movies. They had offers I believe for two more full seasons of Thrones to wrap it up correctly and they turned it down and did a rush job.

He put an excellent performance throughout the series. I loved that subtle protest during the read 😂

Varys was a phenomenal character, and Conleth was brilliant. He will always be Varys in the GRRM world to me.

He should be upset. The hatchet jobs by the powers that be ruined his character’s development. And then they cruelly killed him in a way he wouldn’t want to die.

I remember watching the table read recently because i only just watched GOT this year. I cried with him, actors can only do their job and thats read the scripe and be the character, follow directors etc. They rarely have any say in the script... He is an incredible actor though

JRRM said back when S3 came out that GoT needs 10 seasons x 10 episodes to tell the full story. Dan&Dave rushed it because Disney was planning a Star Wars show and they wanted to get it. Thats it

I feel his pain. I, too, was not happy with the last 2 seasons of Game of Thrones. I don't know anyone who is.

Not having the final showdown between Varys and Littlefinger is the biggest blue balls of the whole show. It was set up in one of the first episodes and throughout until LF was unexpectedly killed off. Those were the 2 main players and I get the theme of the "game of thrones" is nothing compared to dragons, Bran magic and the threat of the white walkers so them being gotten rid of at that point was gonna happen, but it was so important that they should've had one more scene. It's like they forgot what the show was about or made it for different people than were watching in the early seasons It's worse that they got noticeably dumber and died in equally dumb ways. Old Varys telling Ned he was an idiot to talk about getting rid of Cersei instead of doing it and then new Varys telling Tyrion about killing Daenerys before he does it seems like different characters

D&D kind of forgot me, the shows fan who supported them and the show from the beginning. I will never watch anything they have taken part of for what they did to Varys, Cersei, Jon, Brienne, Arya, ghost, Daenerys and her dragons.

Varys and Littlefinger last had a conversation in season 3? During the “Chaos is a ladder” speech. Kind of a nice final scene with his rival, but I get it. I would’ve loved if they held onto killing Littlefinger for just a little longer so Varys could be there and Varys could mock him about his ambition or something bolas he’s bleeding out

I enjoyed his character throughout the whole series

Varys was ourstanding. Devlishly clever, intelligent, aware and a fucking bad ass, almost mix between bitchy and manly.. quality choice for the actor. Hill was wonderful to watch.

If I was in charge of starting a new ASOIAF series on HBO I’d pitch the idea of doing an adult graphic novel anime style show television series of the main GOT stories from the books. I’d want to cover everything from the books so I’d want say 15 episodes each 55+ minutes long in a season. Only since I want everything covered I’d chose to cover each book story done over 1 season for the first 2 books. Then 2 seasons for the remaining books. So as to cover everything in the books but also so as the years go by 🤞🏻 🤞🏻we can finally get book 6 aka winds of winter released lol

A terrible thing the way the show ended. It was so bad that it made everyone want the books even more, but it simultaneously scared GRRM into continued writing paralysis. A high quality, 13-season version of the show (keeping the first 4 seasons that we got essentially the same), had it been well-received, would have given GRRM a ton of confidence and taken pressure off the whole thing. Just think, with Covid, a 13 season version of GoT might just be ending now or even in 2024 . I say we do a fresh remake starting in 2030, regardless of the status of Winds at that time (after all, if it ain't out by 2030 then it ain't coming out at all).

Varys and Tyrion became idiots in the last 2 seasons and Sansa randomly became a genius.

They did Varys so dirty. In fact the sequence of scenes from him bluntly asking Jon to become king, although he already knew Jon doesn’t want to, until Varys death may be my least favorite overall. Littlefingers death was not great but Varys was much worse and yes there should have been a conclusion to their rivalry. If I am not mistaken, the chaos is a ladder dialogue is the last time they see each other. This scene is widely agreed to be extremely epic but it is not a closure on their relationship

Seriously. Littlefinger & Varys ends were so anticlimactic it was painful. It didn't even matter that the Starks got their revenge on Littlefinger it was just like "really...this is his play? *This* is what he believed would work?'

They did rush some things, while others seemed to drag out. So many loose ends.

He should be proud of the character he brought to life. The fans don’t blame the actors for the 💩the writes/show runners crapped out

He as an actor didn't fail us. He played Varys so well even with the dumb scripts he was given. He played it well enough to the end.

Wish the directors felt that way. Once they ran out of story from the book, they didn't try or know how to finish a story .

Not surprised. I don’t think any of the cast members actually enjoyed the ending and how their characters developed into complete one dimensional vegetables

I don't blame him for being upset, you would have thought the writers would have made a epic showdown moment between Verys and Little Finger. Like the setup for HoTD and the Spy masters for both sides having a personal battle of their own. It's a shame the writers couldn't do either Varys or Little Finger justice and have them face off in a personal like HoTD. Instead they made both charchters idiots for the final season. Making them make mistakes they'd have never made if they'd have been written by GRRM. The way he wrote both characters was that they where too valuable to not use by any lord of Westeros but the only threat either truly had, was eachother. A fitting end for both would have been them taking opposite sides in the war for Westeros and being the victim of each others plots seeing both characters die a fitting death worthy of their charchters keen minds.

All ended with Varys having a pointless ark in the tv series lol died fried in the end

I really dont understand why D&D decided to nose dive the ending instead of leaving the project Even for selfish reasons it would have been better leaving it on a high note while they had book material then letting someone else crash it for the HBO so that their reputation would be legendary unlike now where they are blamed for the downfall Or were they honestly arrogant enough to think their rushed contrived ending was actually of good quality?

Basically every character got shafted by the last seasons. Everyone teleported everywhere, erasing the need for great dialogues along the way, the quality of dialogues dropped overall, and everything just seemed rushed like someone wanted to be done with the show.

In the table ready for the final episode, he threw his script onto the table in palpable disgust. I felt so much for him. What bullshit.

Blaming it on HBO is such bullshit. D&D wanted to move on to their next big fancy Disney project and phoned it in so damn hard. HBO offered them 10 episodes for Season 8, D&D couldn't be bothered.

I'm telling ya all, he ain't the only actor who is disappointed. I'm pretty sure others don't speak up about it, because they don't want to look like "that" person on their resumé. And there are also people like Kit, who still have roles to play in the GoT universe and cannot allow themselves to say anything negative about it. 🤔

Varys was ruined in season five when they turned him into a Daenerys supporter. It removed everything interesting and mysterious about his character, he was supposed to introduce us to Aegon blackfyre

We know D&D you wanted to be done and move on to other things by the end of season 6. The last two seasons were clearly rushed

Anything after season 3 is not canon. Read the books, the show is cheap

They minimized all of the characters at the end. Varys turns into a shell of himself, same for Tyrion and John Snow. Brandon Stark is supposed to be this mystic seer but at the end becomes king? John Snow the prince who was promised as the savior is banished by his own brother? Man Fu(k D&D. They did everything wrong.

I actually think D&D ruined three important noble families : Martells, Lannisters and yes, Tyrells

The writers hurried the last season because they had a deadline for star wars. They went on to try to write star wars and were ultimately fired. They should be sued by Martin.

He did great! The studio and writers went all woke and girl power on us.

Yeah, even though I didn't hate the final season as much as I've heard from most, it was certainly lackluster and disappointing...

First four seasons are great, almost perfect. Next two are mostly mediocre with some okayish parts. The last two are a disaster, and all copies should be burned.

Characters are only as smart as the people who write them, and when you have writers who are fully spectrum people, well, the character is going to be a spectrum person as well.

I hated the final 2 seasons! You know, like everyone else.

In all honesty can we fully blame the writers the show runners only wanted that many seasons even GRRM said if it were up to him there would’ve been an additional season or 2 which would’ve given the writers more time to work with and have things tie together Nicely not saying they had nothing but we should definitely blame the studio for not allowing it to run longer
