I remember when i first started this business i was taking what is equivalent to couch change to do a floor install. You reinforced what i have been doing for a while which is, my price reflect my craftsmanship and my experience.

Thank you so much for this video ,I had just delt with a customer with a budget it was a big job .I put alot if work into the estimate only to be told I was twice the price of other contractors which is Impossible, im a small business with small overhead and I ran the numbers over an over and even dropped my price in Hope's to get the job.Peopl play games and I stood my ground.

learn to ask the budget my friend. Once I implemented a rule of "if they won't discuss a budget we can't work together" then I walk. It saved me so much.

Love this conversation, in my experience, all builders and contractors that I’ve had come to me to work for them, do EXACTLY THIS. The demeanor and words they say are like they are helping me to work for them at $25 prhr. To me, it’s more insulting that it’s one of my fellow tradesmen doing this. I run into this client wise 25% of the time. I use it as a red flag. I’ve learned so much here on working with this and how I operate., how I think about myself and my business. Tom and crew, your doing so much for all of us tradesmen.

I have been in the building business construction industry for 40 some ideand what you just said resonated, since I was a kid to present I have never been and I mean ever been questioned am I ability or my price meaning did I have enough money in my bank account to do your job ever when in fact I should have been, I don't misunderstand me Everything I've ever done has been with integrity, so the message here is You have to have conviction in your verbage, for me it comes natural I don't make it up it's what it is but I was born and raised into the industry this is why I've never been doubted, So this is a great topic that you're speaking about, I have seen so many contractors where they walk in to meet with a client, I happen to be there to guide and I'm amazed at how many people actually place doubt in the customer's mind, and you know as well as I once that happens the no longer have faith regardless of how innocent or young the person may be, or old, I think I'm an older at 62 I think I qualify, As old I didn't say that, I have to be careful with that 1 anyway great talk.

Truth!!! As soon as I hear a customer tell me what the cost is, I'm already moving on... I'm taking your advice from the last live video, and I'm taking on all the work I can get... I'm currently booked out 3 months... with the potential to turn into 6 months if my next meeting goes well! Most of what you're saying, about pricing and numbers I get! Sales tactics, and customer service I'm on board 100% and I feel I have a lock on! My one area I was lacking, which is what you hit on in this video was self marketing! With just a few social media, and videos I've uploaded, I've already doubled my leads... my focus and goal next year is to implement a larger focus on this facet, building my brand, and taking your words of wisdom to heart! Sorry its winded, but I really appreciate your videos!!!

I had this happen recently. It was 300K worth of work. Tried working with them the best I could. They literally tried telling me the price they know I could do it for lmao. I told them I'm not under bidding and fucking myself, I know what it takes and this is the best we can do and if that doesn't work then I'm not the guy for the job. I told them they get what they pay for and they can call me anytime to fix what the next guy messes up.

The problem you have is that too many contractors have overpriced things. Charging me for supplies that you already charged someone for? Quoting a supply price and then subbing it out with a cheaper item but still charging for the higher item? Customers can do most of the work themselves with youtube. We are paying you to save us time. With such a low viewer count I can see how successful you truly are. Good luck buddy.

What do you do when you mark up your truck and then someone gives you bad reviews for driving bad when you are going the speed limit and minding your own business in the slow lane, even making room for people who want to merge onto the highway and who damn-near come to a stop in the middle of 70 mph traffic. Then yelp holds your reviews hostage and puts the B.S. review as a header on the top of your business page, even-though you don't use yelp because you refuse to pay? And its another contractor that turns you in.

As far as Google goes, their terms of service requires reviews to be posted by actual customers or clients. We've had bad reviews removed from employees that effed up and got let go. You should still reply in the meantime with a neutral "...rest assured, our company takes pride in observing vehicle safety and takes every precaution to..." type of response until, and if, it gets pulled. It may take multiple efforts, as ours did, but it can happen.

Let’s be real as a home owner I have become a diy’er because of extremely shady and garbage contractors. I have gone with lower budget contractors and have been disappointed and gone with higher bidding contractors and still have been taken advantage of. Don’t t act like contractors are being taken advantage of. A contractor may know how to do a job correctly, but how often do contractors actually do the work? They sub it out to a couple of idiots who will cut every corner they can. Do better at a fair price.

Here’s how you deal with that. In a slow, measured and confused tone “Mr. customer I’m confused, I’m trying to understand your mental process here. You just said that you’re willing to trust me to work on your house that you’re inviting me inside into your life, and then with the same breath you call me a liar. (Long pause, look em in the eye) you’re saying I can do the work but only if I come down eight grand and stop trying to rip you off. I know what it costs to run my business and I know what it takes to provide a good product at a fair price with a warranty that means something. if you need help coming up with the money we can look into offers for monthly payments.” Politely, but firmly, call them on their shit to their face. I’ve found that 80% will fold and the other 20%, let them be some other guy’s problem.

Only thing I disagree with is the subconscious lack of support for small business. What if Tom's chicken is the absolute best in the State and you pass em up. Hopefully Tom's chicken had good marketing in place. Just making a philosophical argument.

I was going to hire a contractor till I realized I could save myself $40,000-$60,000 just doing it myself. Fuck contractor markups and all the stupid shady bullshit they pull.
