I saw this in theaters without knowing anything about Joy Division (talk about a tragic ending!)... I'm grateful for a movie that quietly introduced me to a quiet man suffering quietly with his demons. Love
@@mysticedge4 If you think about it, JD/NO and Depeche Mode are a bit similar. DM is less tragic. Joy Division lost Ian and that forced Bernard to start singing. Vince Clarke was Depeche Mode's main songwriter and then he left the group. It was either stop or force someone to take the songwriting duties--that fell on Martin Gore and the band is so much better with Gore writing (and occasionally singing).
Sam Riley should of won a special Oscar for this performance. The trouble is: he would be accused of playing HIMSELF. If Sam Riley had blue eyes, even his widow would believe he IS Ian Curtis.
The thing i loved most about this film is that even if you've never heard of Joy Division or know anything about Ian Curtis' life behind the scenes, or even if you have and you're just not a fan of the band, this is still a great film that can be enjoyed for it's rich portrayal of a tortured soul and their tragically very short journey through life. FYI, i love Joy Division so for me this film was even better as a result of that.
This movie made me shed tears and I never cry. Joy Division and Ian Curtis are legends. There legacy will live for ever. Henry from South Gate California
Anybody that wants to know anything about JOY DIVISION,NEW ORDER,and the Infamous FACTORY Label needs to see this important Post Punk film.Ian was ahead of his time, but with any talent..there is always a Sacrifice to be made in order for that Vision to be fully realized!!! Fans of the early SMITHS wanted them to sign with Factory at the time..imagine that!!!
I'm new , what's so weird about the smiths signing with factory records? ALSO I just discovers joy division and iv heard they were na!ed after a Nazi brothel or something , and ian was a Nazi lol obviously its bullshit mostly bit you seem to know your stuff .
Saw it last night at the Film Forum here in NYC. I was totally blown away. Great film. The music of Joy Division has and will always fill me up with plenty of joy.
i think one of the best movies about history of music we have to pay respect to joy division thnx for the great music you gave us R.I.P ian curtis i hope you dance even there
Rip Ian, you have made history.
These actors were such good musicians that the live clips were my favorite parts of the movie.....and the guy that played Ian Curtis had an incredible resemblance! just a very well done movie...
I meet this film when i feel a similar yonguer love and live in fact i see It the firsth time with him....and never i love without CONTROL like this agains.....so 😢🤔😍
This looks fantastic!! I can't wait to see this flick! :D I'm a huge Joy Division fan so seeing the trailer is making me really excited for the movie! And then, I read that JD will be re-releasing all of the albums and putting some rare live tracks on it so it's awesome!! ;)
Everytimes i am looking at this masterpiece, i have goosebumps all over my body, all over my "Heart and Soul". Joy Division and Ian Curtis forever, but, shure, genius addictive to heroin Martin Hannett too, the one who sculpted the sound design of Unknown Pleasures. 🖤
Yeah, i looked it up and you're right! Thanks man;) I was never a real fan, but when i saw the movie this blew me away. I originally thought they only made crap Love will tear... (sorry i call it crap, but that song does not even come to ancleheight of this one)
This movie looks amazing, does anyone know if it's available anywhere here in the us? More so in southern Cali? I'm getting into joy division and everytime a hear a song again or listen to a new one, it's just amazing, I can feel the music.
@@kidcharlemagne3044 hello I also come from the future, I watched the film 40 years and 3 days since the passing of Ian Curtis, I can say wholeheartedly I enjoyed this film.
I saw this movie recently. About thirty years ago, i bought their records released from "Facrory" lebel, which also had "Durutti column". Although interesting movie mostly, sorry to see that "Facrory" stuffs were not rarely there. And closing theme song of this movie, "Shadowplay", played by unknown group was suck.
I'd never heard about Joy Division before I went to the movie. I had not idea what I was watching, only at the end do you realize what a fantastic movie you've just seen. Does anyone know what the name of the song is that was played at the end of the movie, whith the black smoke?
Ian Curtis is up there with Byron or any of the romantic poets in my view, however difficult is to say without sounding pretentious. The only negative thing I have to say about Joy Division is that the albums almost need a parental advisory warning (of course it doesn't really, but) - it's a very dark place for a teenager to go.
Is there anybody who can tell me what song it is they perform live in the 1st half of the movie with the lyrics: "they just keep calling? me" repeated in it?
Reply to temptationbase: I agree, its one great movie trailer - must rank as one of the best ever. Reply to Lookb4Ucross: same here, it's still affecting me and I'm here having a quick look. I'm writing a novel, not a cheerful one, a discovery of a suicide, the scene in this influenced my writing where his wife returns, done very powerfully in the movie. Does anyone feel that the movie itself was a a tad 'too long' and possibly should have been cut? Didnt Curtis & wife marry too young?
Just finished watching this film. Great work of art. Love Joy Division. I just can't shake my disgust for Annik. I know it was Ian too, but she should've left a married man alone. Poor Deborah just had to sit home with their child while vlbeing cheated on. And at the end scene of Debbie and Ian he said he doesn't wanna lose here, where she replies but you love someone else. And he screamed at her before telling her to get out and leave, to come back in the morning. What was Debbie supposed to do? Stay with him while being cheated on. Such a rollercoaster. I feel sorry for Ians troubled mind. He will always be an amazing artist. And I'm saddened by his death at such a young age. On the other hand..in 2014 Annik's death served her right after all these years.
If you read Deborah's book (Touching from a Distance) you will see that Ian Curtis was not an innocent helpless victim at all. His cheating had nothing to do with his epilepsy, it was a rather typical male behaviour. And who forced Deborah to stay at home? None other than Ian, who also forbade her from even listening to his songs. Deborah first heard the songs of the second album, where it is obvious that the lyrics composer is suicidal, only after Ian's suicide. It is not Annik's fault, it is Ian's.
