Converting a Coleman lantern to Kerosene

Pretty regularly on the various Coleman lantern forums you see somebody converting a lantern to burn kerosene. I don't really understand the allure of this idea, generally speaking the lantern isn't any brighter than it was before and while kerosene can be cheaper than whitegas the generator will clog more quickly and thus require more frequent service.
Anyway in this video I give converting a Coleman lantern to burn kerosene a try. Warning: Don't try this at home.

I love all my kero stoves and lanterns, never seen kerosene go bad like Coleman fuel or gas.

Recently I pulled out one of my Tilley lamps that I hadn't lit in a long time. The kero in it must have gotten some water contamination, it's green, smells terrible and will not burn. I do agree that kerosene, properly stored will last a lot longer than gasoline but Coleman fuel will too. It's water (which can come right out of the air) contamination that ruins fuel...

Hey Kurt; i have 2 CQ lamps (one straight gen, one looped Gen) both the same basic model. can i install R55 gens in these to add the cleaner tip function???

Sure can, the R-55 is a period replacement for both the Q99 and Q77. Keep the old ones, people like to rebuild and use them.

@@LanternLabs does the Q-77 (straight gen?) have packing like the Q99? or was the Q77 unpacked tube?

@@LanternLabs Thx the Q99 i have crusty outside but new looking packing inside. the 77, i'll try wire packing. does the R55 allow from light level adj like on the 200A's and 228's lanterns? (i kno they are diff gens)

Kind of a controversial question. There are some that say it will wear out the gas tip more quickly. Generally speaking sure, you can do what you want with your lantern :)

What if somebody buys it? I remember someone years ago posted a 10 year old cheese sandwich that was described as resembling some Biblical personage, or other. Somebody actually bought it. Anyway, I have not used Coleman Fuel in any Coleman product since back when I was a child. Always gasoline. Kero might be a viable alternative in a pinch, as long as the device was designed for both. I have an old camping stove that runs on multiple fuels. I think it is a Primus.
