Liz Lambson is a Korean/African American artist, musician, and writer, and - along with her spouse Sam - is a parent to five boys residing in Salt Lake City. Liz performs as a string bassist with the Ballet West Orchestra as well as the children’s singer-songwriter Lizzy Luna, the creator of the music-and-movement program Yoga Storytime & Songs. Liz performed for and toured with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and Orchestra at Temple Square for several years. She released her first album of original children’s yoga music, Reach to the Sky, in 2018. Her writing has been featured in publications including the New Era and the New York Times.
As an active member of Utah’s arts and culture community, Liz formerly served as the Executive Director of the Utah Black History Museum. Her artwork is featured on Salt Lake City’s Black Lives Matter mural at City Hall. Liz is also an aspiring film actress.
In her spare time she enjoys needlework, gardening, road trips, and Scrabble.
We begin Liz’s story with her family and childhood as a biracial Korean/African American struggling to assimilate into white culture. Her mother converted to Christianity and became a religious fanatic, leading to her eventual abandonment of her husband & children. Liz is introduced to Mormonism shortly after and finds Joseph Smith’s early religious confusion relatable. With continued exposure to LDS peers, including a boy who particularly holds her interest, Liz gains a testimony of the Book of Mormon and falls in love with Mormon culture.
Liz also shares her struggles with academic, artistic and spiritual perfectionism in high school. We learn ways Liz gives up pieces of herself as she tries harder to assimilate into Mormon culture and eventually makes the decision to attend BYU.

I had the privilege of crossing paths with Liz when we were both in one of BYU's orchestras. Even though we didn't know each other, she radiated beauty and light at that time that I still remember. She shines even brighter now. It's an honor to hear her story!

Liz! I saw your picture on the part 2 thumbnail and thought, "Hey, I think I knew her in high school from youth symphony!" I was right. Thank you so much for sharing your story. It is easy to forget that those we walk beside in life carry experiences so different from our own. As someone carrying my own sadness during those years, I remember feeling like I didn't have to put a mask on around you which is a testament to your authenticity, even as a teenager. Wishing you and your family all the best!

"Stan" FOR SURE had feelings. I know of no man, Mormon or not, who will drive across state lines for a weekend in early-mid November, to take a HS girl to a dance as a college freshman. He's either a LITERAL saint, or he had some serious feelings motivating his actions.

I go by Liz and I'm a former musician with a degree in creative writing that also grew up in a "difficult" home. The way Liz describes the process of writing or creating where it will eventually have to come out. That's the most perfect way I've ever heard it described!

Wow this amazing woman has some serious grit. Many of my (coincidentally white) friends who are so frustrated that I left the church, have never been through trauma at this level. They have two supportive parents. They had a stay at home mom, baking for them and joining the PTA. They have plenty of money that has always been shared via parents. They have parents who paid for college and youth expenses. They have parents who were emotionally there for them, were there when they got home, and who even babysit the grandchildren. They are cisgender with hair that only has to be washed and combed dry. And they just cannot understand why the church doesn't work for so many of us. This is why. They have not been through the experiences that marginalize them, traumatize them, negatively spotlight them, abuse and "other" them.

This was a really great interview, John. Liz, thanks for sharing your your story. You're very intelligent, creative, and well-spoken. Your voice also sounds so pleasant, so calming. Haha. It might sound corny, but I'm being honest here. I'm still in the church and have gotten back into activity about a couple or a few months ago. I've had a faith transition, so I don't look at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints anymore as the only true church. For me, it's just where the Lord wants me to be. You're much better writer than I am, considering the things you've shared. I write stories too, but I haven't published anything yet.

Perfectionism. I recently came upon some new thoughts about "the perfect". Imagine two identical things (it doesn't matter what they are) that are both "perfect". One was produced with effort, the other was produced with VERY GREAT effort. Which of them is more perfect? Clearly the one produced with the lesser effort. Now imagine a perfect thing that is produced EFFORTLESSLY. This is clearly the most perfect of all. Now look back and realize that actually there can be no gradients within the perfect... so ONLY effortless perfection actually counts. 🤯🤯🤯 Now stop stressing and just be you. ... its the only chance you really have.

Man, Liz’s experience growing up is so similar to mine in the sense of not having a voice or taking about your feelings with your family. Her story of her first period, shaving, boys, issues with friends and even her first bra is oh so familiar. We even share the same name. I’ve grown to see the good in all of those experiences especially with raising my own kids, but boy do I still have issues talking to my family especially about my feelings. I definitely suppress my feelings even now. Listening to Liz brought tears to my eyes.

From an Atheist's point of view, (regarding her mother's changed view of the white church when she found out it was a Mormon church and her friend who told her to burn the book of Mormon because it was "evil"😂) Christians hating on the Mormons is beyond absurd but also very understandable because most but not all Christians are pretty hypocritical when it comes to Jesus' teachings. The Mormon missionaries have always been so kind to me and also respectful, some of them I'm still friends with.

Non LDS Australian here. I shake my head every time I hear Americans talk about race. How hard is it for bi-racial people to fit in to a country where your race is your identity? And heaven help you if you are not 100% Asian. I know for a fact the Japanese won't accept bi-racial people. It seems Koreans are the same. Your guest will have fitted in well growing up in Australia where we don't care what race you are.

I actually shared this very intentionally. Active, believing, and/or faithful Mormons are discouraged from viewing, listening to, or partaking of any and all purportedly “anti-Mormon” media and information. By Part 4 (releasing Thursday), you’ll understand how, why, and when this podcast became only recently (very) relevant to me personally.

Not a faux pas to me at all @E B. My stuff is often viewed as dangerous to believers. They only view when they have time and interest and feel safe to view. Also, my style is super long form and I’m not everyone’s cup of tea. I care about people’s stories, not that they’re fans.

@@mormonstories oh my gosh- you’re trying to defend a comment that was just in bad taste. Has nothing to do with candor or honesty. If I went on someone’s show, I’d never admit I never watched his/her show. If I did, it would be communicating that the host’s show wasn’t worth watching. It has nothing to do with “being a fan.” It has to do with putting across to an audience that as a guest, you are honored to be on someone’s show. If she didn’t think it was worth ever watching your program, why be on the program. I feel like I’m explaining something that should be obvious. Lol
