Check out the Mushroom hunters on RU-vid so you can learn all about every kind of mushroom. There's so many to hunt which would also complement a deer meat cook pairing with wild mushrooms, just don't for get the Kikkoman Marinate Sauce. You'll love it also on Deer Meat. FYI- All Chickens Molt and then start laying again.

saw dust from a lumbar yard, in the caribbean especially in trinidad we use it for our chicken pens it doesnt harm them and they are able to scratch without hitting the yard dirt, when it gets all gooish after like we week we usually scrape it and use it for manure very self sustaining

Hey Kelly and BlueGabe, I expect most lion's mane or mushrooms in general sold at farmers markets are not foraged, but instead are farmed. It's quite easy to grow mushrooms. I suggest you start with golden oyster mushrooms as they do really well in Florida's climate. Lion's mane is also easy to grow. You can pick up some grain spawn and grow it on hardwood pellets (from any hardware store - a 40 pound bag is usually $7) which have been pasteurized with boiling water and cooled down.

I think the goal for a chicken cage is to move it like every few weeks and let the grass recover. That way you won't end up with a guano pit. Thank's for the great video!
@MrLemaire1
@MrLemaire1 2 года назад
It’s actually better to move it more often than that. Like once every 4-5 days. If they can have 4 different spots to move it (it appears to have enough space in their yard), then each spot would have around 2 weeks to recover.
@mikeables
@mikeables 2 года назад
@@MrLemaire1 How often the grass run is moved depends on how big and how many chickens. Yes to moving the pen often enough to keep the lawn in good shape. I kinda wonder, do those chickens eat the ants that live in Florida lawns?
@AmandaP111
@AmandaP111 2 года назад
Suggestion: Throw the leaf litter from the banana trees in the chicken coop/cage, gives them something to scratch around in besides the actual ground. My neighbors chickens use to tear up my flower beds super bad and I started dumping all my plant trimmings and leaf litter in a pile next to the spot where they came into my yard and they started leaving my flower beds alone and stayed in that pile.

As an Outdoorsman & Forager, the best way I found to cook Lion's Mane Mushrooms is to cook them like Crab Cakes. Use an Old Bay Seasoning Crab Cake Recipe an substitute the Crab with Lion's Mane Mushroom. It's Amazing! Lion's Mane actually taste a lot like seafood to begin with & you'll be surprised when you "Peel" the mushroom, it looks and feels a lot like crab meat. There's video's on youtube on how to make it. Another mushroom to try other then my all time favorite, Morels, would be "Chicken of the Woods" which taste a lot like Chicken, hence the name...haha.. might be a good one to try and make chicken of the woods stir fry or something. Love your Show Kelly! Been watching since just before you & Gabe did your first video together & I've been watching Blue Gabe since his early bobcat/construction video's as well as watching Deermeat since April of 2014. :-) Love what you guys are doing & beyond happy to see your wonderful families come together in so many ways while teaching, inspiring, & motivating so many people! God Bless & Thank you guys for all the wonderful videos! If you guys ever find yourself in Va looking for somewhere to hunt mushrooms, deer, turkeys, etc, give me a shout!

@jtdamomma

Hey Kelly, you can go to etsy and order the substrate and the spores to grow Lion's Mane and many other mushrooms. I just ordered some spores yesterday to try to grow myself! It's weird how I did that last night, and you had a video about it today! They say it has the texture of lobster and can taste like crab. Shred it up and make crab cakes with it(don't add any crab, though!). Add some Old Bay to the seasoning. I watched a video on some recipes. It looks really fun to grow, and you can grow 3+ cycles (flushes) and keep getting more and more! I can't wait to start growing some mushrooms! Oh, and the wild chicken (an Americauna btw), are molting right now, and with the shorter days, you won't get many eggs at all. I have 10 hens, and I'm only getting 2 a day, and my 2 Americaunas (lays blue eggs) haven't laid in a month! As the days get longer, they'll get back to normal.

Great how-to video! I don't know how windy it gets there but you might want to add some screw-in anchors so it doesn't blow away in a bad storm. Also, you may want to add spikes around the perimeter to prevent predators from burrowing under the fence to get your chickens.

I grew up in At. Petersburg. We had 7 banana trees. I was told that banana trees only fruit once every 7 yrs. That way, we had bananas every year. Research: All I could find out from our friend, Google, was the following (copy n pasted) : Banana stalks only produce fruit once, so it's important to cut them back for new fruit to grow. There's probably more information out there, but I watching baking bread in the oven. All the best to everyone. Chef Scott.

@hanshansen9873
@hanshansen9873 2 года назад
@@IslandKey Yeah Kelly It seems like 3 years are it for chickens, as far as laying eggs, but some can go a little longer. If that bird of yours is older, Gabe might rethink about wanting to eat that one, it will be tough as shoe leather. Most chickens for consumption are about 6-8 weeks old, raised only for meat. I would buy 30-50 and 6-8 week's old and put them in my freezer last all winter, same thing that they do in our grocery stores. What I liked best about raising meat birds is I knew what I was feeding them, no chemicals, or steroids'.. Your doing a great job with them, have fun.

If you were doing it right (joking) you would do a chicken Tractor so you can move their location every few days. This would allow them to scratch and ware a location for only your allotted time then you roll the chicken tractor however far you want and it’s a fresh start for both the chickens and the grass/area you choose. RU-vid Chicken Tractor and you’ll see exactly what I’m referring to. They’re so easy even the boys could move them and help. Best of luck.

I had four and a half acres at one time and we had a 12x14 chicken coop and if you don't put any wire mesh down below ground they're just going to dig right out of it just so you know. Or animals that want to kill them will dig underneath and get inside you need to dig a trench around your chicken coop and put no dig mesh underneath heads up :-) by the way that comes from my wife and we experienced it first hand. We actually had a Guinea that we had pulled right through a chain link fence by a bobcat it was horrible I had to shoot my gun to scare him off the property so he wouldn't kill the other one.😧😎👍✌️ Our biggest concern was coyotes trying to get them so we really had to put the mesh down to keep the coyotes from digging underneath the cage and no climb wire on the sides and we also had a chicken coop we actually put them inside of every night that was made out of 5/8 plywood to make sure nothing would get to them and they could lay their eggs in there calmly and not have to worry about anything. All for a few eggs that we could have for breakfast yeah buddy :-)

Great video! Chickens in the yard might be a bit much for me but I’ll look for those mushrooms. Definitely a facial resemblance between you and your dad.

Dont cut the mushrooms just shred them like oyster mushrooms. Its one of the safest to harvest mushrooms and has know brain benefits too.

Looks like puffball that we cook in Michigan. The internal texture is very similar and very delicious 😋.

Nice job on the chicken wire thing , but you might want to consider anchoring it down so that when the big storms come , it won't launch into the air ? I know it has plenty of holes in it , but so do trampoline's
