Customer complaint building was a bit warmer than usual. found one of the pumps on the ckt had failed. Quick replacement and motor tear apart to looky at some weak ass bearings.

I've known of a maintenance guy greasing a 75 hp motor on a base mounted horizonal split case pump routinely. We got called out their for "a noise coming from the pump". We determined that they motor bearings are failing and recommended replacement. During replacement of the motor bearings , we found that the old motor had sealed bearings and that they were covered in grease. Every time the maintenance guy would apply grease via Zerk fitting , the grease would accumulate around the sealed bearings, which ending up overheating them and causing premature failure as we all know that you don't grease sealed bearings.

I’ve replaced bearings in two different return fans on some older mcquay units and upon breaking them apart with zerk fittings they were just completely engulfed in grease. The grease was even heading down shaft. And can’t blame somebody who’s greasing a motor with zerks. My theory is motor company’s are doing this for time saving and possibly having motors fail early so a replacement can be bought. I’m about the only guy who actually replaces bearings in my company. Others just replace with new motor and call it a day. Tin foil hat engaged 😂
