The best way to learn about an antique garment is to reproduce it, so today join me in perusing every detail of this 1907 tailored womens jacket as I work to bring it back to life! This piece has been lent to me by @AbbyCox and you can see many more antique clothes on her channel.
Despite appearing soft and draped, fashions of the 1900s are full of surprises inside. They are often full of internal layers and structure which helps to keep the shape, even with the softest textiles. The ideal Gibson Girl silhouette was not achieved without a little bit of hidden trickery, and this jacket is no exception! Inside it contains multiple interfacings which help to support the skirt, collar, cuffs, and waistcoat. Though it has suffered through the years, most of the pieces are still present. And what has disintegrated has left their shadows behind for us to examine.
My goal with the project was not only to understand this particular jacket better, but to learn construction methods from the Edwardian era. I wanted this to be an "everyday" piece for history bounding, rather than an elaborate costume I rarely wear. The style of the jacket is flattering with both historical and modern ensembles, with or without a corset. The fact that I can wear it over cozy sweaters is a plus!
