Could This Be Gabby's First Fall On Chino?

Chino always looks so engaged when gabby rides him and like he always wants to please her. It’s so nice to see when a horse clearly loves their job 💕

Im so glad Brandan called out her short stirrups 😂 I was just thinking to myself, “wow those are short stirrups, looks like she’s sitting in a chair” and then *cue Brandan 😂 I never thought to look at the height of the posting as an indicator, though! I was always taught that once in the saddle, with your legs dangling relaxed, the stirrup should hit right at the ankle bone, and that’s a general good length. Up 1 hole if jumping larger jumps, but otherwise works for flat and jumping 👏🏻 Learn something new every day! Brandan is my favorite trainer 😄

Obviously I'm not a trainer or anything like that, but maybe if you did some grid work/ gymnastics with Chino he might pick up his legs and hind end more over the jumps. Again, I'm just a kid like you guys, lol, and this is just what I saw in your vlog today. Also, I'm American so I have no idea if that made sense to you guys or not lol. And if you do decide to do this, obviously make sure it is okay with your trainer(s) first as I'm sure you will and take it slowly. :D

I feel like Chino will be more enthusiastic once he’s back in shape. The poor guys had so much time off and now he’s right back at it.

I'm no trainer, but I think that the reason Chino was taking the long spot or chipping in was because Gabby was holding him back, I do this as well, especially over bigger fences, you can try jumping some small cross rails and just giving him a nice loose rein to the the striding he needs/wants, personally for me I find that just giving them a little more rein over jumps helps. My trainer tells me to not think about the jump so much and nailing the correct striding, but to focus on not holding the horse back and also keeping a good quality canter. Great Job though! Hope you don't think I'm trying to hate, just personal experiences I have gone through.

Hey! I was just going to say this because it happens to about every horse and rider when jumping. The poles on your standers seem really light, therefore I think Chino just thinks he can hit it. If you get heavier poles, I think Chino will learn that he needs to pick his feet up! (I also know that Chino was off for a bit, so I completely get that he could miss a few poles) (he is so cute 🥺)That happened to me at my barn and I got new poles and my horse started to pick his feet up more! I don’t know how heavy your poles are, so yeah lol! Gabby and Chino look great together! 💜👏👏

Great riding gabby! It's hard when they consistently take long spots. My horse looooooooves a long spot and sometimes it feels like whiplash!

I love the “thats ok!” bc honestly I think I need a new trainer. it's alot of ”youre doing this wrong” and things. she oddly gets mad. my pony is still learning to jump and it's hard. she just isn't helping the issue.

Great progress with Chino! What might help Gabby with her strides during jump sequences is sitting back and counting strides while half halting a little as a way to say “wait, wait.” Then give the jump release when you want him to jump instead of the other way around. It just seemed like he was waiting for you to tell him when to jump but you didn’t, so he was like ok....and ended up either picking a long or short spot. No hate intended with this comment, just thought it might help. Love you guys sooo much!!!! Can’t wait for more videos!!

😀On that jump after the corner at the top end of the arena - A horse’s balance changes before during and after a corner or a turn like that so he needs to be more prepared by Gabby’s aids (the combination of these three aids together but in this order always) Seat,legs and last adding hand (squeeze the ring finger). Before, During and after as she’s straightening him to go toward that little jump , but at her beginner level, she can do it before the turn and then after the turn to start with. You have to remember that the balance of the horse changes before during and after a corner or turn and then you have to repair them to be straight on a straight line. Engaging your seat with your lower abdomen and lower back and then close both calves in toward each other (not the heel) and squeezing the outside rein while supporting with the inside rein Will give the horse the rebalancing half halt and then you release and give the hands forward slightly while continuing to close both calves to ask for more forwardness and more energy while looking for your striding. A half Halt is to rebalance the horse and to call him to attention or to let the Horse know that something new is coming or something is changing. A half halt is never to just pull beck on to slow down your horse if he’s going to fast that is where you use your core with lower back And your seat and if needed a little bit of outside rein to slow The tempo or speed of the horse. Just like when you want your horse to slow down in the posting trot, you just slow you’re posting and if the horse does not respond from you slowing the motion with your seat from posting less/slower, then you add your outside rein of opposition and give a quick squeeze with your outside ring finger or fist. The half halt is for rebalancing and calling your horse to attention and telling him that something new is coming up like a transition or A lateral movement or a corner, etc and the half halts always come from the combination of seat first, then leg to tell the Horse to keep moving and thinking forward with his hind legs and then hand to make sure the horse does not just run out the front door.

We measure our stirrups by letting our legs hang and swing where the stirrup hits. Above the ankle too short bellow too long and if it hits the ankle bone then they are good. Then for jumping we will shorten a hole of 2.

Well done Gabby 😊👍 You can also alter your stirrups with your foot still in the iron or take it out and just move your leg back a bit and do it from the front, I’m sure it would be easier for Gabby 😊

i absolutely love Chino, he's got great movement and so much potential. For fav horses my ranking would be 1 chino, 2 finn, distant 3 storm. Finn has such great movement as well. All of them are great horses but by far chino is the best mover and then Finn. Will you be leasing out or part boarding Storm to someone so they can work with him. Has brandon or fiona considered that Gabby rides with a fairly open hip angle which makes her posting look more upward, therefore suggesting to close the hip angle may work better? Also gabby's leg position and stirrup length will be something to get used to be but it will make all the difference in the future. It's like your new boots Laura, you've ridden in them 6 times and they hurt your feet, same premise with the stirrups and position for gabby. Chino is a breath of fresh air, love watching him work! :)

A good tip for the correct hunter stirrup length is to let your leg loose next to the stirrup leathers while you are sitting in the saddle and the bottom of the iron should meet with your ankle bone! This is how I measure my stirrups.

Chino just needs Gabby to think of her contact or in other words her elbows, forearm and hands as if her forearms grew and lengthened 3 feet and she could wrap her fingers around the ring of the bit. The elbows need to act like a hinge and the contact needs to move from the shoulder joint and the elbow. Imagine your super long forearms with your fingers wrapped around the bit ring and Your elbows open and close because your hands go forward and then back to neutral, forward and back to neutral over the horse’s withers. You know how a jockey has a contact where his arms are going forward and back, forward and back, forward and back because the horse’s head and neck is really stretching and going forward & down then up & back, forward & down then up & back as the horse takes gigantic galloping strides and in order to have a consistent, sympathetic and Elastic contact, the writer needs to follow the horses head and neck movement or motion as it goes forward and back in the walk and the Canter. Some people imagine rowing a boat and as the horses head goes forward and back you say row row Row your boat or whatever type of imagery works for you as long as your thumb stay on top and your elbows hang down by your side and your elbows act like a hinge opening closing from your shoulder allowing your upper arm to push your forearm forward and your hand goes forward and back with the horse’s head and neck movement.

Looks like Chino will need a little time to get his muscles & stamina back. He'll get there. I guess the new riding position for Gabby could've contributed to Chinos knocking down poles, too. They'll get back in sinc soon. Go, Gabby! 🤠👍
