LGA 1151, AM3+, LGA 2011-3, FM2...it can be difficult to keep track of all the different modern CPU sockets! Here's what you need to know about them.

I found my first computer collecting dust in the basement about a year ago, and since I hadn't actually gotten into computers until nearly a decade after I stopped using that pc, I never knew what was inside. I opened it up and was greeted by a big cartridge with a tiny fan on it labeled "Pentium II". I hadn't even known at the time that cartridge cpu's ever existed.

Fun little fact... AM3+ CPU's are compatible on AM2+ motherboards but not the other way around because they use the same socket type except, AM2+ is only compatible with DDR2 ram and not DDR3, while AM3+ is compatible with both DDR2 and DDR3 ... the only thing AMD did right.

Another great and simple video that explains something we all deal with as tech people. Could you all do a video on the new digital audio products coming out? What I mean is on iOS they will send sound via the Lightning connector or Android sending audio via USB3 type-C connectors on some newer phones. Thank you.

Pssss... AMx+ sockets are sometimes backwards compatable with the non+ versions. ie: AM3+ socket will work with AM3 chip, but not the other way around. :3
@rjfaber1991
@rjfaber1991 8 лет назад
Not sometimes, but always; that's the very meaning of the +. If socket AM3+ wasn't compatible with AM3 CPUs, it wouldn't have been called AM3+ but AM4. I'm personally quite happy that AMD pays such attention to backwards compatibility, because I'm running an AMD Phenom II X6 1055T (AM3) CPU on an Asrock 970 Extreme4 (AM3+) motherboard, which would not have otherwise worked.

I personally think both 'array styles' used by AMD and Intel make sense for their products. In most cases an Intel CPU will cost much more than the motherboard so theoretically it's better for the pins to break on the motherboard rather than on the CPU

@parakmi1
@parakmi1 3 года назад
Girls. They all have diferent size and shape sockets but compatibility will probably not be an issue. Make sure there is enough lubrication before insertion. This mostly comes preinstalled but you may need to apply some manually. it is very wise to cover your entire cpu with a special rubber cover before inserting into the socket. This may slow down performance and not provide optimum experience but it will provide maximum protection against viruses and malware and also save you from alot of trouble in the ocassion of uncontrolled coolant leaking. Please note that brand new motherboards will have sealant in their sockets. This is nothing to worry about as it will brake off as soon as you insert the cpu but be sure to do it gently for the first time.

I found one of my parents old pcs in there closet so I decided to clean it up as I had nothing to do and it was the weekend and I kinda got bored of most of my games so then when i was taking out components I realized I hadn't taken out the cpu yet so I looked around and found a cartridge with a 40 or 20 mm fan mounted on it and I thought ok well that must be an old cpu so I googled it and realized that cpus were also inserted like cartridges a while ago I was then confused as to how to remove it as it was bolted on the mobo with rivets and other stuff that is hard to remove.

Things that were either incorrect or missing: -CPUs on cards were an experiment, and before them PGA sockets already existed. They were mostly useful in the days of the external L2 cache. -Back then, both manufacturers used the same sockets, but Intel in order to monopolize the x86 CPU market they made their own sockets exclusive, forcing AMD to use their own and several 3rd party manufacturers to leave the market.

oh jeez this brought back some bad memories. A few years back I had a fairly nice little prebuilt pc and it was starting to show its age. I checked on the case and it proudly displayed "AMD athlon 2" on it so I did the "logical" thing and went ahead and purchased an AMD FX 8350. not smart. so I get home with this beastie in my hand and set about trying to pull my computer apart and after a lot of effort I finally got to the motberboard which, superficially at least, appeared to have the right sockets. This was back when I didn't know about sockets. "AMDs are easy to install" they said. about five minutes of wrangling later and I'd bent two pins. an hour of desperate wiggling with a knife later and those pins totally came off. I spent the next hour or so practically crying at my own failure. and that's the story of how I threw away about £180 on a processor and then killed it before I even got to run it.

yeah i have bent pins before (on intel), had a old pentium d rig (pentium d 945 i think, either way i know it was 3.4ghz stock) which during a thermal paste replacement we got a little on the pins on the board, we then tried to wipe it clean but ended up bending on of the pins, turns out it wasent just another ground pin we bent so pc didnt boot. next day went out and built a new system, AMD athlon II x4 640, 4GB ram and geforce gtx9600 512MB now im on AMD Phenom II x6 1055t OC'd to 3.5ghz 9GB DDR3 1333MHz 1TB Hitachi ECO drive 480GB SanDisk Ultra II SSD AMD R7 270/270X (both the 270 and 270X are the same, just the 270X has an extra 6 pin power connector)
