Hi phil one of our older hen 3 years old hen do not lay egg but regularly goes in nest and sit for a while comes out with making noise as if she laid.i. g She is not internally laying looking normal enegetic Why would this be happening
@flytesofancy
@flytesofancy 2 месяца назад
Hi Nash, providing she's not egg-bound or eating her own eggs before you get to them in the morning, it could possibly be that your chicken is reaching the end of her natural egg-laying cycle. Her going into the nest box and making all the right noises is because she's in the habit of doing so, whether or not she actually lays an egg. Hope this helps!

@flytesofancy thank you, she moults on time and stopped laying 18 months ago. When she did lay, she laid about 30 eggs here and there. She's a mix so perhaps that's why. She didn't do this that much last summer but is going to the nest a lot more this summer. We are 99% sure she doesn't eat eggs as we have a camera.

Hi phill can you help I feed my hens laying pellets but just recently they have gone off them I’m now feeding them mixed corn wheat and oats as they won’t eat anything else at this time .i don’t get it theses pellets are supposed to be what they like but I really don’t know what to do or feed them any ideas would be great ( by the way I have 11 hens in a very large run )

You have to harden your heart I am afraid. Much like children with Mars Bars and Broccolli, given the choice they will be picky.Withdraw all choice except the layers pellets(good quality please). They will eat! I have never seen a flock of hens starve itself to death yet, they are far too smart for that. :)

My hens do the same. I went to crumble and they ate it more readily. I wet it a little to make it clump together.

If battery hens life is so horrible ( stressful) ( and it is IMHO) how do they produce such perfect eggs
@flytesofancy
@flytesofancy 2 года назад
As a consumer, you would never see any of the odd shaped eggs that a battery hen would produce as the farms would get rid of them before they ever hit the shops - 100's of chickens laying up to 2 eggs a day means they have plenty of 'perfect' eggs to pick from. Between that and the food they are given (which is probably not the most natural food in the world) would increase the chances of the eggs they produce being more 'perfect' looking than a chicken left to their own natural devices. You also have to bear in mind that a period of stress to a free range bird, vs the stressful life of a bird who has only ever know the inside of a cage, is going to be very different in its impact on them
@mikeorr9533

@@flytesofancy Indeed. Chickens only lay one egg a day, not 4!!?
@flytesofancy
@flytesofancy 2 года назад
Sorry - Mistype! 2 eggs a day, across thousands of birds! Typically yes, one a day is standard and healthy - however in some circumstances they can produce two per day. And these are hybrid birds that has been bred across generations to maximise production, so healthy does not often factor into it
@mikeorr9533

Lol. You've editted to change from 4 eggs a day to 2... Ok Chickens lay, at best, one egg per 24 + hrs. They ovulate and are fertile in the half hour after they lay their egg. If no cock available they lay unfertilised egg. One egg a day maximum.
@flytesofancy
@flytesofancy 2 года назад
Just correcting the original typo is all :) Yes, a standard healthy hen will produce one egg per day due to the time taken to fully form an egg shell. However the ovary can, and often will release more than one yolk - hence where your double yolkers come from! In most cases this is all you would see, an extra large egg with two yolks. However, in some instances they can end up producing more than one egg. It is more common in younger birds with an overactive egg production system shall we say - in the same way a new bird may continue to lay through the off season. By no means an every day occurrence, but not impossible!
