I cut so much out of this video. Even with it being this long, there is a lot of stuff I didn't mention. This game is just that good.
A small thing I should have mentioned, I love how all the masks say "Aboopity bup" when you pick them up. It's so great. The masks definitely have more personality than the ones in Wrath of Cortex. And they got Richard Horvitz to play one, and I just love hearing him in stuff. See? That's just one example of stuff I could have put in the video.
Whatcha think of the new intro and outro color fade? I've been considering doing it for a while. But I was hesitant to commit because that would forever lock these videos into the monochrome style. So if I wanted to change the channel look down the road, they'd have this leftover artifact. But I'm feeling good about the style, so I think I will be sticking with it. At least for a good long while.

I forgot to mention the wumpa fruit. I love how they've made it so you automatically get it once you break a box. That does a lot to improve the pacing of the game, since you don't have to start and stop all the time anymore.

I gotta be real and say I adore the over-animation most of the time, I think it fits the new art style which I'm also a huge fan of. This is probably because I'm a 3D animator who tries to push for stylised movement and silhouette as well, so it's absolutely a huge bias of mine. I won't deny that more subtle animation can benefit even the cartooniest of characters however, and I'm sure it would still be equally as impressive. Things like little eye darts, subtle motions in the fingers, etc. I imagine due to the nature of the narrative and the short cutscene length, there weren't many opportunities for longer shots with more subtle character movement and they definitely wanted to show off how expressive and posable their new character rigs were. Anyway, cool video, I've been watching a lot of your stuff recently and am really enjoying it all.

Glad you like my stuff. With the animation it's really just a taste thing. Something like Luigi's Mansion 3 is the type of animation I prefer in cartoony things. A good balance.

They over animated the game cus the original was supposed to be as animated as possible (makes sense if you watch the interviews with the developers) of course they could only do so much on the ps1, but its a homage to that

The inverted levels are just filler, but 100% in Crash 4 isnt too bad since you dont need the time relics or perfect relics to get 100%. My issue is that these levels are too long for time trials.

43:05 -- Put this perfectly. I really hated how they marketed Tawna's appearance in this game before release, as if we couldn't just use the original Tawna and her design and make HER the badass version. That after Crash 1 she learned to fend for herself. This is my least favourite trope for female characters, because it defeats the entire point of "woman character is badass" - because it means they HAVE to be this, or nothing. 48:28 - Yes! I thought the animation was gorgeous, even in the cutscenes, but it absolutely felt like everything was way over the top. It was cringey to a point, which merged with the new "Woah, look how hip, cool, and quirky the new Coco and Tawna are!" just really didn't do it for me. I did like how Crash was animated, though. And Cortex's design just... Eugh.

What you said about bosses reminded me that I really do love bosses when done well and they are my favorite part of Sonic Heroes. However my favorite platformer generally is still Rayman 3 and no one ever mentions it! The feel and control is perfect. The combat is just deep enough and has some of the best takes on how power-ups are used, actually requiring some strategy if you're going for high scores. You should definitely check it out if you like actually good 3d platformers.

I think the thing that bothers me the most is that its usually only ONE BOX thats really well hidden. Like I ended almost every single level with 109/110 or something like that just ONE OFF. Like if it was a few I wouldnt mind and would probably not even think about it. But when its 1, I'm like how? Where?

Would love to hear your thoughts on the DKC trilogy and Tropical Freeze, or maybe Rayman Origins and Legends. I find your vids provide nice insights on these platforming games and have some interesting perspectives I don't often see. Branching from Sonic to Crash made me very curious on what you think of some of the other big name precision platformers, much like Sonic and Crash I think the others I mentioned are both difficult in the right ways and fun to play in a 'time attack' way. I often hear empty praise for them without saying exactly why they're good so a critical perspective might be refreshing for a change.

If anything I hate the art style in the N.Sane Trilogy, It feels like they Just made the models and Put realístic Fur and ignored the zanyiness and cartooniness that the PS1 models and concept art had, now with Crash 4 We finally have a hd zanyiness and cartooness characters that the original concept art aimed for.

FINALLY someone who appreciates this game and it's difficulty. Personally it's my favorite Crash Bandicoot ever, but I feel Toys for Bob should have been more lenient with the completion requirements (just like the Nsane Trilogy only required gold relics to 100% the games) and consider the nsane perfect relics and platinum relics as extra challenges for the people that want to go as far mastering this game, just like they did with the dev relics. Personally I enjoyed the challenge of the perfect relics and didn't mind the nverted levels that much since I would do them while practicing mastering a level, but I understand how most players find this too difficult for them.

For some perspective on the game's tone, it's a lot wackier than Crash 3, but nowhere NEAR as wacky as Twinsanity or Titans, like they were trying to strike some middle ground between the Crash fans that never left and the Crash fans that did.

I think the problem is that rather than trying to get a consistent middle ground of a sincere but still inherently silly plot (eg. the Naughty Dog games or Crash Nitro Kart) it kinda just flip flops between full on wacky almost parody levels like those games or outright trying to be unfittingly dark and serious like the Tropy climax with Tawna's backstory. It's very mood whiplashy and never quite clicks. It feels a bit like a comedy made by dramatic writers, especially in how a lot of the main focus is on the unfunny characters with Crash just kinda being the background comic relief, or 'Coco's pet' as the video terms it. :P Combine this with the animation, which again has either over the top zany and hyperactive vs characters that are barely funny at all, it's like to these guys, there's no nuance or promise to comical stuff. It's just the fluff you give to unimportant nimrods like Jar Jar Binks, an approach I kinda hate. A lot of my favourite fictional characters are clowns that are still treated as having a soul.

I love how this game throws no BS gameplay as Crash 3 do. It's pure insane platformer and how levels are designed, they always keep me comming back. Variety also helps a lot, only offering you more platform challenges with different characters. It's friggin' hard as well, that helps to keep the challenge high. The flashback levels remind me of those Kaizo levels in Mario World somehow but in Crash style were they stretch the difficulty so much but always taking advantage on the level design in creative ways with the boxes. Altrough played the game in Classic mode just to challenge myself, still I ended up looking only at 2 whole game over screens in the whole game. Completion aside, it's the best Crash game.

Yeah for whatever reason, people act like getting 100% in this game RUINS the entire thing, and while I thought the process of getting all the gems was a fun and important part of the original trilogy, I don’t need to complete Crash 4 to have a ton of fun with the game and for it to be my favorite Crash game. The standard level design, controls, platforming, etc is just that good. The alternate timeline levels making you replay most of the standard Crash/Coco level afterwards can get repetitive, especially if it’s a level you don’t particularly like, but overall this game is just so damn fun. It is also the same reason I prefer Mario 3D World over most of the other 3D Mario games because there’s just more straight up platforming challenges in 3D World. I’ll also disagree with you on the art style for Crash 4. I think the N. Same games look fiiiiiine I guess, but after playing Crash 4 I can’t help but think it just looks really ugly.

49:14 you heard it here folks: Pariah doesn’t like it when animation is used as a way to make the characters look lively. /j Seriously though, as an animator, the statement kind of bothers me. The animation of this game is supposed to make it look like it’s a cartoon, because they are cartoon characters. This is the kind of animation Sonic fans strive for.

I hate that they replaced the running shoes. I get that it's for a more skill-based challenge, but it feels more like adding a lot more steps to get the same result as just holding the button and zooming through the level.

This is is sequel I always wanted, and more. This true evolution of Crash gameplay being flimar, and fresh is great blend imo. They do pad this game out to justify the price tag. Which isn't necessarily lengh doesn't automatically make game better. This by far one of best, and consistent Crash experiences. Never takes nose dive in quailty like the previous games normally do. I am little biased towards easy to play hard to master though. I don't get much satisfaction out of easy games.

Actually, Developer times technically already existed in Crash 3. they were just hidden in that game iirc. I think its a good addition that they didn't hide that stuff in Crash 4. I generally find it weird in modern day when people complain about "having too much optional content". It's like people these days don't buy games to have things to do and have fun, but instead to say they beat a game and add it to their list of completed games. Like you said, if you don't wanna do it, just don't lol. Glad to hear the game lived up to what I heard of it. I actually agree with the game being a bit over animated. it's hard for em to explain but it kind of feels overdone to an extent to the point where it doesn't feel organic. Like, I end up feeling like it smore the thing going "Look how much we can animate and push these movements!" rather than just making an organic feeling experience. I don't wanna say its "bad", it isn't. But maybe just show some restraint, lol.

I feel the same way when people complain about really long games. Some people say they don't have time for long games, so they prefer to play shorter ones. But how does that even work? If you have time to play 3 short games, you have time to play 1 long one. Like it would take too long to "get through", which is so weird to me. If a game is good, why can't you just keep playing it for a while?

I do absolutely love this game...on a casual run. On a completionist run, it's a tedious nightmare. But I will say it might be my favorite Crash game, and that's saying something considering for many, many years, I've considered Crash 3 to be my favorite game. Most of the levels (on a casual run) feel tough, but fair, which is something I'll take any day over a game that's just hard to the point of being way more frustrating than fun. One thing I will criticize is how long the levels are. I do feel like they go on a bit too long, which isn't a problem, again on a casual run. But if you do try to get through the game on a completionist run, it can be a nightmare if you don't know where everything is. I do like the flashback tapes, but I do feel like they get a bit too hard at times. I think that's the main thing for me. If they just took some of more difficult parts and just toned them down just a tad, then I think the gameplay would be near perfect for Crash. Now with the story, character designs and all that stuff, I think they're fine enough, though as my brother said, Coco's head has a Kingdom Hearts foot problem lol. Also I definitely agree with you that the characters move around a little too much and their features are a bit too cartoony. But overall, I love this game. Crash 3 will always get nostalgia points from me, making it my favorite, but without nostalgia, Crash 4 may be my favorite as of right now.

Not disagreeing with you about the game's difficulty, but when I played this last week I didn't go for any challenges or gems, I just tried to see how long it would take to get through all the levels. It only took me about 3 and a half hours. Most of that was spent on the last two worlds of course

@@maroonkennedy6213 The best Sonic game we got in the past 10 years is a fan game that does next to nothing other than rehashing old levels and shuffling their order. Wanting more will only hurt more. It's probably best to leave the series behind if the new games don't satisfy you.

I played it. But for whatever reason it didn't really click with me. Did the A and B levels, and got bored by the time of the C levels and stopped. Not bad by any means, but it just didn't do much for me.

Thankfully the 100% crap is optional. Its really good if you just casually blaze through it. I only try to completionize a stage just for a certain costume.

I still think they tried way too hard justifying the $60 price tag with it's overly long full completion requirement. At least it's a satisfying enough game to normally beat.

I'd still say it's debatably worth what it is now even if they made gold relics the requirement, but personally, I do think the hate for the Platinum Relic requirement is overblown. Don't get me wrong, I do think it is flawed, but at the end of the day, getting Platinum relics is required for getting a 106%, but they are still optional for getting a hundred percent. I might not go for the Platinum relics, but them being too hard is in no way the game breaker that people make it out to be.

Yeah, besides 100 percent thing, this is considered besr crash game. But even 100 percent is kind of overblow since it is only inverted levels that are pure filler. Sure, huge chunk of the game, but that is why I advize people to treat them as new game plus.

Crash 4 is my favorite game in the series. I do have a few grievances with it but overall it's a smash hit with me. My biggest gripe with it is I feel that most of the levels are wayyyy to lengthy. Especially closer to the end. Making time trials an absolute pain to restart. For real, some levels can be over 30 minutes long. That's asinine. Crash 1 is my second favorite game and those levels are a few minutes long at most if you're tearing ass through them. Making them far less frustrating to retry. I also don't like how many crates are completely hidden in some levels. Like, without a walkthrough I would have never of found some of these crates. My favorite feature though is hands down the circle underneath Crash. It makes platforming so much better. I love the original trilogy to death but depth perception wasn't it's strength.

Hiding crates like easter eggs isn't a challenge, it is just needlessly annoying and pads out your playtime for nothing (this is specially an issue in Tawna's levels where the crates are hidden away in the background, making you spam the hook everywhere like a maniac); That's also not mentioning how it makes N.Sanely Perfect Relics a chore because of it (overall i don't buy what you said at the beginning, where the developers "understood the games" and how it doesn't have bs moments, since it is full of them). The only true good challenge this game has to offer are the flashback tapes (both in obtaining them and playing its levels), outside of that perfect relics and n.verted levels are abysmal.

Disagree about the N.Sane Trilogy vs Crash 4 style comparison. Not saying that the character models of Crash 4 are great, but I much prefer the cartoony style over the weird realistic fur textured N Sane Trilogy.

I think that the next step for developers to make an "unforgettable" game like crash is to design something that doesn't require us to watch walkthroughs.... I know that's easier said than done... but damn, it would take gaming in 2024+ to the next level

Attempting to 100% the game was borderline traumatizing. The highest I achieved before losing my mind 92%. Then I lost my mind and decided it wasn't healthy for me to keep hunting for the 100%. I was distracted with collectible that I couldn't appreciate or judge if the gameplay or story was any good. After a few years, I will come back to it, and replay it from the start, in modern mode, infinite lives, follow the main path, without intentionally seeking any collectible.

It's definitely my favorite crash game it improves a lot of the gameplay aspects from the trilogy mainly the level design and controls, I agree with some of the negatives you mentioned like how tedious the gem collection can be because the game hides boxes off screen and the n verted mode is just filler, I do like the art style and designs though it's very pleasing to look at.

About 5min in hearing about the praise of difficulty: Would this be a good platformer to play having played Celeste? Does Crash 4 have a similar room-focused platforming challenge progression. The thing that maybe made me think this series was more like Pac in the past was its collect every box style then being pretty on the rails when I'd liked Mario's 3D being more open. I'd be open to playing Crash 4.

I agree with you on pretty much everything except one thing: the triple spin is complete garbage unless you remap the button for spinning and even then I'd prefer just having to slide-spin. Also I found the bosses way too easy and boring personally, not on par with the regular levels in the slightest

Very good analysis, I agree with a lot of your takes. -Gameplay wise, this game is great, characters felt good to control, very good level design and I like the difficulty. -Completion requirements? The amount of hidden boxes, the hidden gems in every level and some of their absurd locations, and N Verted mode, all felt like a chore, not very good. I'm also not the biggest fan of time trials since the beggining, but it's worse in this game just due to how long and difficult the levels are. Plus not sure how I feel about the triple spin. But still it's not as bad as the N Verted mode, because at least, like Caddicarus said, you're playing the level in a completely different way. N Verted mode just makes you do the same crap. I didn't mind the Perfect Relics though. -Music is good, some definitely stood out to me, but mostly it's just not as memorable as the original trilogy. -I personally like the art style and I didn't mind the character redesigns (except Alt-Tawna) but if I were to choose, I prefer the visuals of CTR:Nitro Fueled more, that game looks amazing, it's cartoony but not overly so, and it improved on a lot of the things the N Sane Trilogy lacked. This very cartoony art style works better for games like Spyro, it's why I love what Toys 4 Bob did with the Reignited Trilogy. -In terms of animation, I never considered how over-animated it is. Now that you said it, I can definitely see it. I think Toys 4 Bob animation directors went too hard on the "Crash was inspired by Looney Tunes" thing. But I still liked it, it's better to be over-animated than have stiff animation, like some parts of the N Sane Trilogy. -I thought the story was overall good, but what I didn't like was the way they handled the N Tropies. I expected a huge showdown and was let down by how quick they were defeated. Also not a big fan of Alt-Tawna, and how there's no mention of the original Tawna, other than "we lost touch in your universe too huh?". Not even in the flashback tapes. -I agree that Coco's characterization was a little off. About N Gin, I guess they were trying to strike a middle ground between the original N Gin and the more chaotic N Gin from later games. I didn't mind. Dingodile felt off to me at first, but I got used to it. But seeing him made me wonder just how much time passed between 3 and 4?

Really I kinda liked the N Tropies going down like punks and Cortex taking over afterwards, because I'm kinda bored of the whole 'generically sinister REAL villain that usurps the main one' formula. Eggman and Bowser just constantly end up victim to this. Plus it kinda fits Tropy's earlier characterisation where he was more elegant and clever than Cortex at face value but made a complete fool of himself the moment he started losing the upper hand. Cortex is a butt monkey but he can work with it, Tropy can't in the slightest. Alt Tawna....really shouldn't have happened. Not unironically any way. I don't think the tragic hurting badass hero really works in a Crash game, not unless they play it at least a little tongue in cheek so she still fits. N Gin was....okay, but he's just kind of a non entity here, the later N Gin worked because he got so many fun gags and bits of screentime to make him likeable while here he's just making a roll call. And yeah, not sure about Dingodile. I mean I like the idea of Dingo having off-the-clock stuff, but still he was a total slimeball in previous games. I see him as basically the Moe Syslak of the Crash universe (though really that could have worked fine with him opening a restaurant, just have him threaten a kid over their 'freakin' soadie' XD).

I personally hated the new masks. -The phase mask was annoying. -The dark matter mask was basically death tornado spin, so just let me have it. -The time slow mask was mostly useless. -The gravity mask was the only good one, but it comes way too late into the game.

Getting 106% on this game was no joke... definitely anything after "the crate escape" followed by the last island. But you just have to learn by trial and error. It's true that it's hard, but the game wasn't broken by its own mechanics by default. It did literally drove me into N.sanity🤪 (To the extent where a 33 y/o man would do a happy dance after completing a perfect run). The one complaint: some of the boxes and gems were literally out-of-sight... you can only get them by watching a walkthrough.

Wow my thoughts on this game are really similar to yours. I'm a fan of the core gameplay and level design, but not a fan of the hidden boxes, art style change and the fact that multidimensional travel just felt kinda pointless as almost everything coulda just been time travel.

I have a weird mindset when it comes to this game, on one hand I’d say it does have the best level design and controls of any crash game but on the other hand it also has the most filler and repetitive full completion requirements of any crash game easily. I personally put the original trilogy over crash 4 just bc i like that those games are more compact and not bloated like this game is. I feel with this game you have to ignore content to get the most out of the game without getting annoyed at it and to me that’s a problem. But casually speaking the game is great.

Completion is a very satisfying part of games for many people, so if the process is tedious or unfun, then yes, that deserves to be a major black mark on the game. It's value that you're being robbed of, content you can't enjoy.

I'm not saying a game shouldn't be criticized for having bad optional stuff. But you don't need to let it ruin your experience. I don't really see how it's value you're being robbed of. Because the alternative would be that it just wasn't there in the case of things like the N.sanely perfect runs or developer times. Which is the same as it being there and you not doing it, other than a meaningless number doesn't go as high as it can.

You want to feel that sense of accomplishment that comes from mastering the game, and people will feel bad if it's something they can't reasonably do or would have an unfun time doing, either because of legitimate difficulty, pure tedium, or unfair design. This is far from the only example I can think of that optional content reasonably ruins games for people. Sonic Adventure 2? Awful to get A ranks, chao emblems are tedious, takes crazy amount of replays to memorize the level designs, and the game is heavily designed around playing for score, so playing "normally" isn't nearly as satisfying. Personal example: Celeste's Chapter 9 Farewell was such a chore to complete that it made me never want to touch the game in its entirety again. Many people complain about how Hollow Knight's Godhome content locks new endings behind extremely difficult time-consuming boss rushes, and it sours them on the game, their perception of the entire experience is knocked down a couple of pegs. Pac-Man World 2, a game where collecting things in the levels is very satisfying, arguably just as enjoyable as conquering the obstacles, has some extremely questionable placement of pellets and other collectables, preventing the game from being a joy to fully complete, making the process of grabbing collectables in a normal playthrough feel more hollow, since you know you aren't working toward the ultimate goal. Bad or unenjoyable optional content is still bad content, and can ruin masterpieces.

@@themissingbits6375 As someone who grew up with heroes and enjoys 100%ing it to this day, I completely see why people find finishing the game unfun. Unfortunately, heroes is much worse for that because just finishing one campaign isn't the game's end. You need to do it all to see the game's true ending, so I would definitely hold that as a major flaw on heroes, as it isn't "optional." If we're going as far as to say something like that is optional, you can get away with excusing huge core chunks of games or just entire games period by saying you didn't have to play it. You can still have fun with the parts you enjoy, sure, and if you're someone who doesn't let that kind of thing bother you, like pariah here, that's great, but that personal experience doesn't invalidate that many players are going to feel bad about not getting the full joy out of all a game has to offer. Worst case, they will personally feel like a failure for not being able to do something. Going back to SA2, I didn't grow up with that game, and I expected to love it, having played heroes and shadow a lot when I was little. I beat the game once, and I really didn't like it. It feels horrible to see a bad rank pop up on the screen, especially when the game is plagued with design that really necessitates replays to know where the questionable level design elements are. Nevermind fully completing it, getting good ranks is completely optional, but so much of the game is designed around playing for rank. Points are your incentive to kill the gold beetles, do tricks, target bunches of enemies at once with the mechs, etc. and because getting good ranks wasn't fun for me, where I did generally enjoy playing for rank in heroes and shadow, it made the game as a whole much less enjoyable for me. What you and pariah are saying about "just don't do it" is like telling me that I shouldn't care about that stuff that bothered me because you don't need to do it, which just isn't helpful or fair, to me or to anyone else who has had experiences like this. I did care and it affected my enjoyment. I can't just change that. It's a fundamental part of who I am that I can't get rid of.

I'm really glad for people like you who can be happy only doing what you like in a game and not being bothered by the other stuff, but I can't relate to that, and a sizable amount of gamers are the same way, so when I hear this argument that essentially states that people like me are wrong for being so bothered, it feels awful, like our experiences and feelings toward the games we play are not seen as valid. For me (I can't speak for everyone), my idea of fun isn't just the innate pleasure of playing something that feels good, it's also, in large part, the sense of pride and accomplishment.

@@themissingbits6375 You are totally right about the game not making you do things. That you don't need to do it. No one can dispute that. That's good enough for some people to not care or worry about the things that would bring the experience down for them. But to me, the game presents me with an obstacle or challenge or system, so I'm naturally going to want to try to do it to prove myself, to engage with it, even if I don't love it. Also, I'm not going to know if it's worth trying or I don't like it unless I try it first, in which case I've already invested time and effort, meaning I'm more likely to want to continue with it. I've never even played a crash game, I just like viewing content like what I find on this channel, but I know just from what I've seen that if I were to play it (Crash 4 specifically), it would bother me to play the game knowing that getting all the boxes is such an insane chore, but if I don't do it, I'm missing out on the challenge and the pleasure of breaking boxes, and that number/max that displays at the end of the level would leave me feeling unfulfilled. That's why it irks me so greatly whenever I hear people say this.

I disagree about the art style. I think it's a much better fit for Crash than the style of N.Sane, and it makes more sense if you think of this as a continuation of the Crash series as a whole, not just the sequel to Warped. Crash 4's aesthetic makes more sense as 'Crash 8' than as a sequel to Crash 3 Warped, or more specifically the remake of Crash Warped featured in N.Sane Trilogy.

the only issues i've had with crash 4 is the inverted levels feeling like filler and the time trials lasting way too long making them feel so tedious. I've completed everything in crash 4 except the time trials, i'm roughly half way done with them, and they aren't as fun as some of the time trials in the n sane trilogy. those felt rewarding, crash 4's feel unfair at times. other than those two minor problems, crash 4 was amazing and is the best crash game every made.

I like a lot of genres. I've done videos on some of them prior to doing Sonic. I like action games, shooters, fighting games, metroidvanias, point and click adventures, survival horror games, and action adventure games, to name some. And I do absolutely plan to do more videos on those types of games. It's just that lately I've been playing platformers.

Loved the game but too frustrating for me. Lack of checkpoints and the levels are too long to be 100% as they were in crash 2-3. I liked it but I have more fun in the old games. This is too much for me

The first 2 minutes felt like a bit of gaslighting. Perhaps Im commenting too early, but this game is dead last in terms of quality and content. At least of the numbered game This game...the devs made a _decent_ Crash title. And that works favorably in light of how licensing and brand recognition works. The original devs said it best when they posed the question "why would you want a new one". They understood the market when it sold well and how it really only made sense during that time As for this period, I'm not convinced the devs really know how to push the medium. They dont really introduce anything we haven't seen before OR what they do include are thematic references to things other franchises have access to, such as interspace travel (Ratchet and Clank: Rift apart) Again they make a competent game, but one that is very plastic and safe. It's a Walmart title, if you know Crash by name, this is the one they will hand to you (for 59.99) There's no paraphernalia, no culture, no expanded kit you can invest in unless we're talking about microtransactions. In other words, I'm not looking out for a three 5 hour DLC campaigns focusing on Dingodile or Crunch, its just the base package Doing it better? Again, what are they doing to push the meta? What makes this one modern that would maybe even intrigue adult players into looking at Crash in a way they didn't think of before? Me, the only time I could count myself having fun was when they introduced the spin mask. They were playing around with camera perspectives, having the player push the mechanic using trails/achievements, and it revitalized one of crash's core gameplay routines from crash 1 level one: can you cross and get all the boxes without falling The rest of the game I'm fighting with the mechanics, having to sit through cornball dialogue, and having rote muscle memory punished like Im the one who's wrong for playing the older games. By the end of each level you get a score and its like "Jesus, they expected all that" I got every platinum in Crash 3 and even that wasn't this taxing. The skill ceiling becomes the floor which may as well be a spike pit for the things Ive mentioned earlier. And with a new experience, there's not a whole lot of incentive to see it through. As an adult, doing so would be a waste of time I say that, not as a boomer, but as completionist who understands the core ethics of speedrunning. Crash 2 is objectively a far superior game and its over 20 years old. You would think that in that time, the devs would be able to deliver a product for a console that mostly adults can afford

the additional characters kinda suck especially tawna since her lankiness makes her hit box very akward. it's why most platformers have stubby characters you play as. also you cant really play this game with a completionist mindset or you'll be miserable for the majority of it. once I gave up trying to get every box and failing 90% of the time I was finally able to enjoy the game, but still just having that experience for the first few worlds left me feeling pretty sour toward the game. I think the cinematics are pretty good, but that could just be me thinking of the alternative of under animated cutscenes that ratchet and clank had in its remake also CTR is still the best crash game.

I'm sorry, but I couldn't disagree more. I do not like this game at all. Everything, from level design to the alternate characters, I hated. They went way overboard with everything. Level design is frustrating and irritating, especially in the late game. They expect the world from the player for full completion, having far too many boxes per level, with way too many of them being stupidly hidden. (NO LEVEL SHOULD HAVE FIVE HUNDRED AND TWO BOXES.) Expecting the player to get Platinum Relics on every level is horrible, as well as making the player get every box without dying once for another collectible. (WHICH MAKES THE 3 DEATH GEMS COMPLETELY IRRELEVANT.) The Quantum Masks have awful voices and terrible mechanics. The phase mask is frustrating, the spin mask just makes me wish I had Death Tornado Spin as a power-up instead, Time Slow is irritating, and the gravity mask is... Okay, I guess... And speaking of power-ups, Triple Spin is horrible. Just give me the Crash Dash instead... Timeline levels are also awful. You get to play as your alternate character for a little bit, then you have to replay half the level as Crash? WHY!? WHY couldn't it have just been exclusively the alternate character instead of making the player play the exact same level design they JUST DID!? N. Verted is horrible filler, just to get that Gem counter up. (You need 456 GEMS for another ending.) And SPEAKING of those endings... Your reward for doing every last thing in the game and getting 106%... Is a 20 second cutscene. I didn't go for 106% myself, but if I'd done all of that to be greeted with what you get, I'd have given up on the series. The one thing that I agree with in this review is the criticism of the artstyle. I despise the artstyle of this game, especially Coco's character design, giving her an American Football head, and Tawna's design. They could've just made it regular Tawna from N. Sane. She fended off the Lab Assistants in 1, why could they have not just made it the same design as N. Sane? Why did they have to mess with the designs at all!? If it isn't broken, don't fix it. And the biggest kick in the balls about these designs... The final cutscene of the whole game after the final boss LITERALLY SHOWS THE OPENING CUTSCENE OF CRASH 1 FROM THE N. SANE TRILOGY, SO THEY HAD NO EXCUSE. My God, Toys for Bob dropped the ball with this game... The fact that they had the gall, the nerve, to stick a massive 4 on the title and expect people to revere it as the definitive 4th entry to one of the greatest video game trilogies ever is downright insulting. This very nearly made me quit the entire series, even without the 106% bullshit. Crash 2 is a vastly superior game, and I have absolutely no qualms in calling this game, without question, the worst Crash Bandicoot platformer I've played, possibly even one of the worst games I've ever played in my life. And I've played Sonic 06 and Mega Man X7. Both of them, I would replay in an instant over this abomination.

I wouldn't say this is one of the worst games ever, that's going a bit too far, but I do generally agree with you that I was unimpressed with the overall game design. Lots of padding, and ultimately it felt less like a successor to Warped and more like "let's just ape Crash 3 and add more """content""" to give it a 4". I feel like the general population has kind of forgotten IAT by now, and I really doubt anyone's going to consider this game one of the classics like C1-3. It's the definition of mid.

When i finished my first run with some gems i was at 34% completion, you are basically saying i missed 72% of the content (since the max is 106%) the game offered, it's not really bang for my buck.

It's really amazing that Crash 4 It's About Time ends up being THE best game in the series considering that it was published by Activision. There is more Crash game out there but I think you should stop right there. I would recommend Doom 2016 and Doom Eternal but you don't look like the type who is into the FPS.

@@Pariah6950 You know how in Doom 2016 there is a thing called Push Forward combat? How the game makes you play more aggressive and smart, makes you swap the weapons for any given situation, and manage your resources. Well, Doom Eternal is more demanding with that since your ammunition is more limited. Doom Eternal also contains marauder which is an enemy that you will either hate or love it. Or hate it and then love it.

Crash 4 is a great game, but it's absolutely the worst Crash Bandicoot game and it's not even close. Levels are far, far too long, awful excuse to justify "over 100 levels" when over half are just reused levels with a makeover, mask powerups are underused, and Dingodile and Cortex levels are too slow

There are like only 5 or 6 levels in the game that were actually long and even that isn't a big issue as the gameplay and level design are by far the best in the series for also being actually challenging and having almost no vehicles, that alone makes it better than Warped. Who expects over 100 levels in one single Crash game? 38 is perfectly enough for a modern traditional Crash game. The masks weren't underused. You use them a lot in this game. Out of 24 Crash only levels, only 4 of them don't have any masks and the first level is one of them so they were used often in this game especially near the end. Cortex isn't slow. Use his dash.
