I agree about the intelligence of these birds. Many years ago there was a cockatoo named King Tut who greeted people at the San Diego Zoo inside the main entrance. He was situated on a perch (no cage) inside the flamingo lagoon. He was quite the little ham. When he hit his 80's he became hard of hearing and developed cataracts but in spite of that he still greeted people. They tried to retire him but it made him depressed so they let him keep his job to almost the end of his life and that was only because his arthritis became too painful to be outdoors. He was so beloved that a bronze statue was made of him which resides in the bird habitat area. The money to create it came from his fans around the world myself included and I was there for the dedication. He never did tricks people just loved him for his enjoyment of living each day and I think at some level he understood that.

Sotto voce! At one point, I thought I heard him say "I dunno" very softly in answer to a similarly low-pitched "How are you?" But whatever it is he's talking about, he's endlessly entertaining. And what a good dad he has to spend so much time with him.
i think max's owner is exceptionally good at making vocalizations and noises that max really likes. of course max being a bird, bird calls are important. in fact i imagine it gives a cockatoo a sense of community and social interaction more deeply than just mimicking talking

"New feathers are annoying: poking through my skin everywhere..." "Are you done driving me crazy?" (Dan growls) 4:08 "WHAT was THAT? "New rule: if I can't growl, neither can you!" 4:52 "DADDY! YOU SPEAK COCKATOO!" "Maybe not: do you know what you just called me?" 5:15 "You don't wanna know what you said. I'll overlook it: I love you, daddy. "I WILL give you a stern, head-bouncing lecture! Dan, I hope you know how much good you and Max do in the world... I suffer from anxiety and there have been so many times that I found my anxiety level rising, remembered that you had posted a new video, and was able to become less anxious just by watching you two... You two truly are very special beings... Thank you for sharing your lives with us...
Max did the "Maxwell Shimmy" at about 0:28 or so. So cute when he brings his feathers up around his beak and whispers kinda like a person does when sharing a secret.
I have to wonder about people who give your videos thumbs downs. I mean really? Max is so cute, who in the world would not like to watch him? Anyway, I love your videos, thank you for putting them out there.

Max was a cantankerous baby bird in this video. It was very funny though him going "what?" and then "hi", like a child trying to get out of trouble. Max, that was some major head shaking. This video really made me laugh so thanks Max and Dan, I needed a laugh.
This is my favourite Max video OMG. You know an animal loves you when they give you complete trust. Max trusts you without hesitation here, and I delight in being witness to it. The other thing I really noticed is that your words don't mean anything to Max, it's all in the tone of your voice and you regulate it so well, keeping it low key and reassuring even when you're "giving him heck". I had two rescue dogs and I used this with them, especially when I got frustrated with them through no fault of theirs, (just being dogs). So I would tell them they were little pot lickers and I was going to roast them on the BBQ, but all in a gentle tone so I could release a little frustration, but they would feel loved. I have never heard you raise your voice at Max or use the word "No". I rarely used the No word on my dogs. It helped me and them not using it. Thanks for sharing your mature, kind and wise caring for Max. I am grateful for it.

I was watching a Pebble video last night and came across a comment stating that Max has 'no personality'. What...? I really don't understand how someone can watch this video (or others of him) and think this bird has 'no personality'. He's got more personality than some people I know!
haha people like putting others down on the internet, you just shake it off. I've had a ton say bad things about other birds and I tell them that I also watch those birds and love them just the same. Every bird is differnt just like every human

Little Max sure has precious eyes. Such a sweetheart. Max I thank you and your daddy with all my heart for sharing the sweet videos. They bring smiles and laughter I wouldn't have. Being confined to home and my bed Max and Dad sure bring me tons of joy and smiles and loads of giggles. It's like watching the most spoiled toddler and his daddy.
Watching max on a big screen TV makes a big difference. I can hear him clearly like "hello there". Max you're a character and that's why I love you so much.

Dan, you made some funny noises at 4:53. I wonder who was imitating who after that? 😀🐔 A friend studied up on big birds because she has an African Grey. She said in the wild they're typically loud in the evenings because they're gathering the flock together to roost for the night. Sometimes Max sounds like he's back in the jungle or forest because he's almost as loud as he can be!
It's been an insane week thanks to hurricane Matthew and we had no power for 4 days. I had the biggest darn grin on my face when I watched this video, it was a well needed stress reliever
Yeah, we were one of the only zones along the coastline in sc to not get evacuated. We didn't get any flooding, but tons of wind damage and trees down all over the neighborhood. We went to scout out our downtown area and it was like a war zone. Pretty terrifying.
