Tailoring a vintage dress is one of the most sustainable things you can do. There’s nothing wrong with breathing new life into something beautiful. Rather than buying something brand new which we don’t need. Buying vintage is also a way many people can afford good quality designer items at a fraction of the cost of current luxury items. If you love the quality but not the price of well made clothes vintage is the way to go. I see absolutely nothing wrong with tailoring a dress to make it current. Especially since vintage clothes were made to last and if you love it can stand the test of time. She would have likely bought 15 SHEIN dresses over the same time she’ll be able to wear and enjoy the one dress she tailored.

i have to agree!! the most sustainable thing we can do is use the clothes we already have rather than buying anything new!!

I think its interesting that only brands that cater to the lower income market are targeted with these sustainability initiatives yes fast fashion brands should be held accountable but clearly luxury brands are no better.

agreed!!! it's very easy for fast fashion to take the fall when it comes to lack of progress but luxury is just as bad and has way less excuses!!

I was just listening to this video and when you mentioned the influencer tailoring the vintage dress, I imagined a very detailed and old rare vintage dress, that was totally modified and made unrecognizable. So I decided to look at the video and it was just a basic black dress. I prefer the long hemline on her, but it doesn't seem like a big deal. I think people are mad because it is a designer dress. If it was vintage GAP nobody would care.

i think it's mostly younger americans who are used to paying ridiculous prices for "vintage" at the moment saying this stuff. anything old is super rare to them. they probably grew up only seeing h&m clothes or whatever and have no understanding of production or fashion history, they would see any old dress as valuable simply for being "hard to find". in reality it's just a regular black dress that just happens to be older, it's not an archival runway piece that was super hard to sew or anything historical or personally valuable. same concept kinda applies to furniture and stuff as well with younger people i've noticed. anything old is rare and therefore valuable to them, even if it's basic or even shit quality.

honestly when i first saw the video I had the same reaction! there must be a good amount of these dresses produced (I found a few online before filming) so it definitely seems unnecessary 😵‍💫
@katierobinson
@katierobinson 3 месяца назад
@@stonersiren i think you're spot on here! we have a perceived higher quality for dresses made later than the 2000s before fast fashion took over, even though there were definitely still bad quality dresses being made back then, maybe this one included...

I'd assume that anyone who is so mad about someone altering a vintage dress also believes in shopping secondhand over fast fashion, so to criticize someone for buying a garment secondhand and then altering it from something that would've just sat in her closet to something that she'll actually wear, and saying that it's so ugly now she should've just purchased it from Shein instead (besides the point that whether or not someone else thinks it's ugly really doesn't matter because they don't have to wear it!!), leads me to believe that they don't actually care about the integrity of a vintage garment; what they actually care about is bullying a stranger online.
@katierobinson
@katierobinson 3 месяца назад
honestly i keep coming back to my point about how she couldn't have got this quality from zara / shein / wherever else ppl are saying she should have shopped at - i can see both sides of it but overall if she keeps wearing it then nothing else really matters!!

With taking it to a tailor she supported a small business instead of throwing it at big corporations who don't give a damn. Tailoring, especially this style of fitted dress is a lot of work which is often underappreciated (not sure where/which fast fashion brand people actually find a well fitting dress). Moreover, most people are not willing to spend a decent amount of money on it, because they are so used to fast fashion prices. Also, throughout human history, people adapted, altered and reused clothing, making the best of resources available to them.

Thanks for the fashion revolution week. I bought a secondhand jumper that I thought I would need to see to fix the neckline but it’s knitted and I have never knitted before. I hope there’s a class on darning because the RU-vid tutorials seem so complicated Also people let go of vintage pieces being altered. Before fast fashion, when pieces were passed on, alterations were made to clothes based on the people wearing it. That’s the natural cycle of a circular economy. Even in countries where clothes are made from scratch still, pieces are taken in or let out if there is still seam allowance. I think the only issue is when you try to alter it and unfortunately ruin it but at the end of the day, it’s your piece so you should change it to make it work for you.
@katierobinson
@katierobinson 3 месяца назад
hopefully they have some classes on that bc I also find following along with stuff only to be v complicated 😅 very much agree, at the end of the day it's not as if it's an actually important vintage piece and she bought it so she can do what she likes!!

Reworking vintage garments feels like taking away history, we just can't get more. Obviously you can do what you want to your belongings, but why share it online if you know you'll get hate? For clout or as rage bait? Intentions matter...if they ruined something just for views, I'm not going to defend that
@katierobinson

i do completely agree with this - when i heard about the drama i knew nothing about the creator & just reacted to what was happening in the video, but if her sole intention was internet fame & not actually keep the dress then that's infuriating 😭

I used to buy SHEIN clothing when I was plus sized. Buying thrifted or sustainable clothing was pretty much impossible for my budget and thrift stores literally had nothing. However, the only thing I will say is, my SHEIN clothing lasted just as long as any other brand. I never had anything fall apart. Now I’ve lost 80lbs and am a us size 10. Thrift stores are now my jam, there is just so much available in my size. I’ve had to buy a whole new wardrobe and I love that I have been able to thrift everything but underwear.

Yeah idk why people bring up the durability when more expensive things have the same durability and sometimes worse. Luxury brands are using acrylic and PU leather 😅
@katierobinson
@katierobinson 3 месяца назад
interesting!! i've never bought anything from Shein so I don't know about the quality firsthand and have always taken other's word for it, but i can imagine the other brands you're comparing to are maybe also fast fashion?? maybe not but if they are then likely they're also using polyester. love that you're now able to thrift but wish you could have when you were a bigger size too, everyone should have access to secondhand clothing 🥲
@Ellzy1
@Ellzy1 3 месяца назад
@@katierobinson I actually have always owned very little polyester anything. I live in Houston so natural fabrics (and rayon/viscose) are pretty much all I’ve ever bought. Other brands I’ve bought range from H&M to Kaliyana (not fast fashion). I look after my clothes though so clothes can last me 20+ years. Until I change sizes drastically at least, hahaha! I’m glad that I don’t need to support fast fashion anymore though, it always weighed on my conscience.

I would add to subject of the altered vintage dress that someone of the crisitims may be more related to the style being like shein. On other words, the style the influencer has gone for will die out pretty quickly and so will the dress. My instincts tell me she won't be wearing it at all in 3-4 years time.

i do agree that Zara and H&M need strict regulaion, but Shein/Temu are ultra fast fashion giants and the amount of clothing they produce is off the charts - you can see if you google "BoF graph an incomparable churn" how fast fashion compares to ultra fast!! but again i do completely agree that more needs to be done to regulate ALL of the industry🫶
