It'd be interesting to see what the 30-something's are consuming from Shein - is it kids clothes? Something that's grown out of in a few months or doesn't matter if it gets wrecked because it was cheap buy another?? Is it changing body clothes? Changing size means new clothes - easier to buy online and cheap to replace? If your body is changing a lot such as pregnancy/post pregnancy then it's expensive to keep replacing your wardrobe? The dynamics of the consumption of this age group would be really interesting to study.....and of course once you get caught up in the cycle of cheap clothing that has to be replaced it's difficult to get out of. It could almost the replacement of smoking as a constant hit too....

i would definitely be so interested in this, i feel like the survey was only surface level facts and i’d love to know all these details! Apparently they think they’re acting sustainably, so i don’t know if it’s just denial / real lack of knowledge rather than actual explainable factors!!

For me the average age of the shopper is quite obvious… a lot of over 35-year old people have children who WANT new clothes that their parents cannot afford. It seems as it is the parents buying for the kids. I do not know any adults who shop there for themselves

personally i was quite surprised given as i said the way fast fashions rise is blamed on gen z, i see so many influencers online around 35 doing shein hauls so i do think quite a bit of it is for them but it would be interesting to see a breakdown of exactly what they’re buying!!

I'm 56 years old and I shop on shein for bras, panties and household items. I also buy unique clothing that I may not see at other stores.

Average and median is not the same. If many in their 20s and 40s shop on Shein the average will be in the 30s and it can still mean that it is not the largest demographic. Same with the spend. Some times the median and average is almost the same, but it is important to present data the way it is used. Not saying that I don't think that most in their 30s shop at Shein, but data presentation can be misleading.

Firstly: I'm always skeptical of averages. Is it mean average or modal average? Because the mean average is usually distorted by the extremes (eg, the "average wage" in the UK is about £37,000. But the modal (most common) average is actually around £26,000) Honestly? It makes sense that the average shein shopper is a peak-millennial woman. Firstly, a lot of 35 year old women have young children, or are pregnant. So they want cheap "cute" clothes for thier kids/their changing bodies. However, there is a rise of the childfree, and those women likely have more spending power than the mothers. However due to the awful economy, shein hauls may be a case of the Lipstick Index among millenials unable to afford the larger things in life, but still have a LITTLE extra.

@@katierobinson Oh yes, I've heard a lot about that. Makes it very difficult to still be hopeful. And it's just getting worse. Germany's party that very obviously stands for N*zi politics is achieving the highest amount of votes they've ever had in polls. They are on second place right now. Holocaust survivors are warning people by saying that it started exactly like that in the past. That party also completely denies the existence of climate change.

The Shein data surprised me but now that I think about it I'm not. People in their 30s have other more important expenses than to be buying expensive clothes. But the amount being spent is surprising. I have never shopped at Temu or Shein however many people around me do. And it's not like people don't have clothes it's about newness, having different outfits, replacing poor clothing from prior purchases, getting that dopamine hit, it is only X amount of money so they purchase it, following trends etc. People know better but they just choose not to be better. Most people think short term, at least the people around me. They won't be alive to see the effects of their over consumption.

honestly this does make a lot of sense, i think they’re using it as an excuse to spend more rather than save the money! so hard to speak to people you love about it, i know i never want to bring it up even though my close circle are participating in overconsumption 🥲

People in their 30s are probably spending that much a month bc they are buying things for the whole family, also house items probably now that there’s more than just clothes. Majority of people are struggling to meet ends everywhere, so it makes sense that they can get a lot more that they need for cheaper through SHEIN… I don’t think it’s all clothes purchases for them

I can absolutely not believe the average Shein customer is 35 years old. As a 34 year old i have never even been on the website and see the concept and consider the quality as complete trash (I work in a second hand store so we receive pieces and Shein pieces are insanely low quality, like shockingly low).

a lot of people have commented here on how distorting different averages can be so maybe saying that 35year olds are the ‘average’ may be slightly misleading! but i do find the idea quite believable, the people in my life who shop from Shein are much older than me! i guess our personal experiences can skew our beliefs 😅🫶

It makes sense tho? In your thirties you're usually working a real job and have a fairly serious well thought through business wardrobe. Going on SHEIN and having fun ordering a bunch of whimsical stuff for weekends and holidays and events then getting rid of it all regularly to get more sounds about right.

i really don't agree with this view unfortunately, ordering stuff on a whim for one occasion just to get rid of it and buy more is hurting our planet and just wasteful. the amount of fashion waste we currently produce is enough to fill one garbage truck a second - and that's all ending up in landfill and causing untold environmental damage. we all have a responsibility to shop better and be mindful about our impact, and buying from Shein just furthers its awful environmental /social policies

Do you know about Circ, Evrnu and Renewcell (Circulose)- they have done a lot for textile recycling and had collabs with brands already. It would be nice to have the content of the sections named in the chapter headings too 😊

I'm not familiar with Shein or Temu really - maybe I made my millennial money fast enough to invest in clothing that I can keep for 7-8 years before it needs to be replaced - but correct me if I'm wrong, if these brands are anything like quality of Forever 21, Fashion Nova, or whatever the old influencers used to push, those things would fall apart in the wash, so you would need to keep spending $100/month in order to actually have clothing if that is where you bought your clothes from? Like it's silly and a bit stupid.
