I’ve never bought Shein or Temu. It’s such bad practice to produce so much cheap tat. I shop secondhand because items made decades ago are better quality with better, natural fabrics. I’ve got jackets that I actually bought in the ‘80s and they’re like new. Fast fashion looks old in the shop.

I only used shein for fishnets and temu for gothic jewelry, cuz I couldn't find those things anywhere in my area to buy. And also make-up brushes cuz in my country just one brush can be more expensive than the whole set from temu/shein. That said, I only shop at thrift stores and completely ignore the existence of all those fast fashion basic af shops.

The rise of fast fashion and unavailability of sustainable clothing is what gave me the push to learn how to sew and crochet. I'll spend the extra time to make it. It's honestly worth it imo

@@katierobinson Oh I am not the person you should use as a measure for this 😅 I'm still in the super learning stages so I move very slowly, and also take breaks that last several days during projects. I assume this will get faster once I get better at saving my patterns, but since now everything I do I do from complete scratch, it's a bit of a process

@@katierobinson I have sewn for about 15 years and knitted for 3 years. Most garnments you can sew from within an hour to a weekend project for more complicated things. This time will include getting your pattern ready (potentially altering it), making a test-run yes/no, cutting out your fabric, and actually sewing it. For knitting, think more about an accessory in 1-2 weeks (knitting in the evenings while watching tv), or 2-3 months when making a sweater/cardigan. Great side-effect of making your own clothes is that you get a lot more aware of what sort of things you actually want out of your garnments, and as a result tend to buy less (because stores don’t exactly offer what you want and you’re less likely to settle for less)

Sad how a monster like Shein has to be the catalyst for changes in policy because it’s all in the name of greed (rather than addressing the various forms of exploitation which are involved)… Yet, I have been glad to see that *something* has finally caused governments to take some sort of action by putting limitations in place and choosing to proceed with caution by bolstering domestic stability. While many benefits have come from globalization, we often ignore the fact that, in many ways, it is a double-edged sword. Amazing video, as always! ❤ Very organized and concise presentation of this information. I definitely agree with your comparison of Shein to Temu. I made the same connection back when I heard about Temu and their messed up business model, so I was not at all surprised to see Shein now attempting to get investors. I hope both corporations will end up being the reason for their own collective demise.

What sucks is that, sadly, SHEIN is kinda the place some folks (myself included) have to go to for stuff they need. I had to get some really basic stuff (socks, boxers, some new sheets, and a couple replacement dishes) and I could only get some of that at Walmart. With SHEIN I was able to get a couple fitted sheets and the socks and boxers for the price of a single pack of sheets at Walmart, which was still pushing it and I still had to debate getting other stuff I needed (a pencil sharpener, a calculator, and a bag for my pencils for college) and eventually didn’t get them because I managed to figure out how to get around that. That difference would have been $8. If money is so tight that you can barely get bare basics, then sadly SHEIN might be what you’re stuck with.

Exactly. In my country, sustainable fashion comes at an elite price tag and thrifting has yet to take off here. I’m a curvy girl and finding clothes is already challenging. SHEIN clothing fits me really well and I’ve managed to keep them for years. I try to limit buying for the sake of buying and keep the items - I don’t care what’s fashionable, I shop for what suits me and my body. This is how I find a sort of middle ground where I get what I need without unnecessarily adding too much to the waste, etc etc.

@@saperlipopetteee6986 I know, but when some people find out the “awesome socks” peeking over your worn out running shoes are from SHEIN you either get people excited and asking what the deal was (bc again, we’re mostly broke) or going off on you for getting a pack of 12 pairs of socks for $4. There’s a level of elitism and people like to go off on you for supporting companies with even the tiniest negative behavior or past even if there is literally no way to avoid buying like… water bottles when your apartment loses water for a week or coffee of ANY kind or really anything that brings even a tiny bit of joy without dropping so much money it loops back around to unethical.

And essentially their business model/goal is “charge very little money even if that means losing money - build clientele thanks to such low prices - drive all your competitors out of business bc they can’t keep up with your pricing - the final goal being upping prices that clients will have no option but to pay bc there are no other alternatives.” And honestly I can see how in the next year or so we’ll get there with shein and then temu. Great video, I would add that Shein and Temu products' returns don't go back in the distribution chain, they either send the packages to landfill or use dumping sites or adresses. There are stories of mountains of Temu and Shein dumped packages in unused buildings (I believe one such site was reported in a New York's abandoned factory). They even use non existing adresses for returns, so postal services are now stuck with thousands of packages that are unclaimed or can't be delivered. My little finger tells me, we'll soon see a price increase from these brands. If they're not careful, they might end up like Wish that got deserted after raising their prices. Most customers knows their buying cheap knock-offs and don't want to pay more for them.

I understand the the primary arguments against the operation of Shein summarized as: poor workplace conditions, exploitation and low pay for workers, lack of transparency, material waste, and damage to the industry competition. Foreign economies (GDP, export, import), globalization, and the natural migration of workers to urban centers has been a long interest of mine. Discovery channel was one of my favourite things to watch growing up as a kid (and still is), and I can remember countless episodes exploring the challenging lives of people in impoverished countries, pursuing dangerous work in agriculture, mining, manufactering, etc. to provide for their families. My question is, why should we treat Shein any differently than the manufacturers/employers of any other trade goods that are exported from countries that still struggle with human welfare? Assuming the work is voluntary, that is, the workers are free to choose their place of employement, why do we not view Shein as a net good? Is it possible that the labor conditions at Shein are preferable for workers in the local region, despite being well below our own North American standards? Is it possible that by boycotting Shein, we risk bringing the collapse of favourable employement for people who are living below the international poverty line? Why do we hold people accountable for engaging in work that damages the enviroment, when they are actively struggling to provide food and shelter for themselves or their families? How do we limit global trade in a way that brings about the most positive good whether it be to North Americans, or to the citizens of another country? I've listened to a lot of social media commentary on this topic, and as a skeptic, these are the questions that I haven't been able to answer yet. I know this is very lengthy, but I'm genuinely curious to hear what others might have to say.

Regarding the Question of "are the working conditions at shein maybe preferable" ... Theyre Not. Theyre simply Not. Theres plenty of Reports about the working conditions, and theyre known to routinely violate labour laws in country that already (by Western Standards) have shitty labour laws. Theyre know to demand 18 hour days, Theres cases of workers only having 1 day Off a month. Theres Reports of shein Factories keeping 2/3 of a workers wages If theyre Not fast enough. This is the Kind of Shit thats caused workers death. Situations Like shein caused the factory fires in Bangladesch in 2012. Or in the US in the early 20th century. And assuming the Work is voluntary is, in my opinion, a pretty naive Statement. The people working in such conditions dont really have a choice. It's either that or starvation. Most of them leave their Kids and families in Order to Work in a hellhole, to survive. Ive Seen the Argument Made that it's still better to keep those Jobs because they "Help", but in reality, it's those Kind of Jobs that keep people down. Those Kinds of Factories destroy the skilled Economy in their Home countries (because the more expensive clothing manufacturers cant completely), they Drive wages down, and they keep people Stuck in poverty. None of that is hard to Research, so as a sceptic, i assume you have come across the Reports and you are playing Devils advocate with those questions. You can make Up your own mind If those Arguments are good enough to boycott fast Fashion or Not. To me, those working conditions are too horrible to Support. You want to "support" workers from those areas? Find small Labels that have their own Factories. They exist and theyre still fairly cheap by european Standards (at least). But personally, im Not giving a single dime to a company with working conditions that have been illegal in my own country for more than a century. And, as i May repeat, that are illegal in China, Bangladesch and other places. Shein Just doesnt Care.

Coming from Marco Rubio, this has not much to do with local and rather a means of Rubio (anti-Communist) to go against Chinese owned brands. Second, to help American Corporations such as Target, Amazon, Walmart that also have vendors that sell directly from China. But since their headquarters are here..... US just wants to help the corporations that pay into the pockets of our politicians. And if they don't tax, they want to be able to get the taxation from Shein. Since they don't want to charge Bezos or the other corporations here the correct tax.

@Aragorn333 3 месяца назад
Both Shein and Tempu are literally controlled and partially owned by the Chinese government. Every Chinese company has a or a team of standing officers assigned by the communist party sit in to make sure the business goes along with the direction of the party. This would be easier to understand what is going on behind. It’s a kind of business war initiated by an enormous corporation (as big as a country) to scattered independent private companies in relatively tiny operation scale. It aims to suffocate those private companies and make them close and completely squeeze them out the markets eventually. That’s will build up an another commodity absolute reliance to China’s manufacturing. Just like the reliance on Russia gas and oil, the economy of the West is nearly destroyed due to rapid rising of energy prices. Every family needs to pay for over 20% higher price tags nearly everything in the past two years. If governments in the West deal with this issue slowly, they will be forced to rely heavily on countries like China and Russia in the coming decades.

hey!! probably should have mentioned this more but I think i did touch on it with the NYC IPO allegation saying they obviously couldn't provide what lawmakers want, i also talk about this more extensively in other videos!!

@@katierobinson Thanks, RU-vid wasn't suggesting the other videos to me, and they weren't linked in the description, so I couldn't easily find them. I had to manually search your channel to find more videos on the topic. Darned algorithm. :(

It comes from a place of privilege to be able snub fast fashion brands because there are a lot of people who are so impoverished that fast fashion is the only way they can afford to buy any clothing. Instead of generalizing negativity towards the brands we should focus that negativity towards people who have enough money to buy from sustainable clothing brands but instead choose fast fashion brands because they can get more to make giant hauls then just throw out the clothing. I am privileged enough that in the past 4 years I have been able to only buy items from sustainable businesses but that is a privilege that not most people can afford.

i definitely do agree, and mostly when I talk about Shein and their shoppers I'm thinking about their 'average' shopper - the one that spends $100 a month on clothes that average $5-7, so buying lots and lots of clothes. People do need access to clothing, but no one needs to be buying clothes on this scale. Like you said ppl doing giat hauls and throwing away clothing - that's who I'm thinking about when I think of Shein shoppers! I'm also in such a privileged place and can afford to buy more expensive, but I also limit myself to 5 new items a year, shop secondhand, do no-buy months etc to cut down on my consumption!🫶

Reminder that brands like this cause so much misery for the real people who have to work there.

BS, most people own more clothes than they need. You can buy less and not have to get poorly made fast fashion. People who claim they buy shein because of poverty are lying.
