0:00 Intro
0:11 Creatine can specifically help females. Creatine kinase levels and creatine levels change throughout women’s menstrual cycle. Estrogen influences creatine levels and creatine kinase.
0:39 Creatine is involved in energy mobilization and metabolism in the brain. It affects glycine and GABA synthesis, and sleep.
0:55 Creatine influences athletic performance, muscular performance. As we age, we lose the ability to retain muscle mass.
1:25 Creatine is involved in helping babies develop in the placenta.
2:00 Creatine is found in chicken, pork, and beef.
2:11 Creatine helps with ATP synthesis and resynthesis in working muscles. It is not an anabolic agent.
2:28 Creatine is very safe for men and women. Early creatine supplements were paired with excessive amounts of sugar.
4:50 With ovulation, when estrogen is higher, there is an increase in creatine kinase and more focus on glucose oxidation.
5:47 With the reduction of estrogen from menopause, peri and post-menopausal women may benefit from creatine supplementation.
6:21 Women have more to benefit from creatine supplementation because body stores are low. Intramuscular creatine levels in women are only 10% compared to that of men.
6:55 Vegan or vegetarian females have the most to gain from creatine supplementation.
7:10 Creatine boosts athletic performance during intense exercise.
8:10 During pregnancy, post-partum, menstruation, during and post menopauses, creatine supplementation may be important. Sex hormones affect creatine kinase activities and the expression of key enzymes for the endogenous synthesis of creatine.
12:40 Vegan or vegetarian females may want to take about 5 grams of creatine. You may do well with 1 or 2 grams of creatine if you have sufficient red meat and eggs in your diet.
14:08 Anaerobic work capacity, the ability to perform explosive short duration high intensity activities, after 5 days of creatine supplementation, increases as much as 22% anaerobic work capacity.
15:30 During pregnancy (shown in animal models), creatine supplementation enhances and augments neuronal cell uptake of creatine and supports mitochondrial integrity in offspring.
16:00 During human pregnancy, creatine may provide a safe, low cost, nutritional strategy to reduce intra and post-partum complications associated with cellular energy depletion.
16:20 Brain cellular energy production shifts with changes in hormones of menopausal women. They may benefit from creatine supplementation.
17:00 Creatine is a possible countermeasure to menopausal decreases in muscle, bone, and strength, by reducing inflammation, oxidative stress and serum markers of bone reabsorption. Loss of muscle mass with age is linked with insulin resistance and reduced insulin sensitivity.
19:00 Depression rates are 2 times higher among females compared to males. This depression has been directly linked to with hormonal milestones, like puberty and menopause.
19:44 Creatine is involved in the synthesis of neurotransmitters that influence how we feel.
21:00 There is a 31% greater incidence of depression in adults with low creatine intake.
22:35 Brain metabolism to support stages of sleep and wavelengths associated with sleep can be improved with creatine.
22:46 Creatine supports greater neuronal ATP resynthesis, impacting memory, attention, and cognition.
23:30 A loading phase of creatine may be helpful. Mike supplements with creatine before and after exercise (sometimes during). It is not stimulatory.

I am a 59-year-old woman and I recently had my appendix out in April. After my surgery my short-term memory was totally shot. My stamina was in the toilet and I felt so bad in my recovery. On May the 12th I started taking five grams of creatine in the morning. My mood is better My stamina is almost back to normal and my memory is back to normal. I'm going to take this for the rest of my life!

Whoa-I was so sleep deprived for year’s following my divorce that was highly stressful- then that stress was compounded by menopause! I feel creatine is something that is helping to restore my brain and body. I had been lifting weights for about 5 months but not seeing any results. Mike Mutzel, thank you for addressing post menopausal women in your podcast. I am 58, and still want to build muscle, as part of my fitness and longevity journey. I have noticed a significant increase in ability to put forth greater power in my resistance training workout. This was mainly for my back/shoulder day. I am still evaluating for my leg day. In a prior podcast, I think you mentioned greater improvements in power (one rep max) for the legs (about 13%?) and for upper body (about 6%)? Was so excited to hear that mental health, including cognition improvements are also a side benefit of taking creative.

Very interesting. I was just writing on another doctors page who covers the Carnivore diet that the #1 thing I noticed when I went on the diet was IMPROVED mental health. The depression and anxiety ( that I thought I would be plagued with my whole life) disappeared. I was looking up creatine after listening to your talk, and it is mostly found in meat and seafood. So, wow. Another piece to the puzzle! Thank you very much for all you do.You are the main reason ( a while ago ) when I heard one of your talks on Vitamin D, that I have made it a PRIORITY to get at least 30 minutes of sun a day....something else that also has helped me immensely!! I'm an elderly female with fibromyalgia, which is proven to involve a lower amount of available ATP. I lost my fitness when I first got sick, and once stabilized, I started to exercise again and couldn't do much at all. I was also an almost vegetarian then, but am on Paleo now. Creatine was instrumental in allowing me to work up to a basic fitness level again. Once I reached that, the creatine did not add any more benefit. The only benefit I got was being able to exercise more, but it was well worth it.
