In this special Aputure episode, Valentina breaks down the lighting of a dance film, specifically with the DMX setup. A lot of times, DMX programming can seem intimidating and time-consuming, but Valentina and our lighting designer, Camilo Godoy, show you how it can be done with some Cintenna TX transmitters, RX receivers, and an iPad with Luminair 4. With DMX, we're able to cue the lights to turn on/off, dim up on intensity, and even pulsate between different colors. There are important topics here about programming lights that we cover in the episode, such as daisy-chaining, DMX universes, and profiles.

Really like that Aputure has integrated DMX into many of their instruments, and is out there continuing to push the feature functionality, and especially this whole series. Very nice. Just passing along a tip that a dancer shared with me at one of my first shoots with a dancer, which was to really lean into shooting the dancer from below. Which is brilliant and has served me well over the years. Most of the viewers of this series will already be well aware of the emotional connotations of low, equal, and high angles have, as well as just the practical fact that when you’re above her eyeline, which was a significant amount of the time, you make her look small and weak(ish), but when you shoot her from below, you lift her up. Maybe another way to think about it is, do you want to see the dancer and the floor, or the dancer and the sky? I’m def not saying high angles don’t have their place, but in this sequence, the high angles don’t seem connected to the character or story; they struck me as simply nobody thought to try a low angle, but hey, I wasn’t there, and the last thing I’m doing is hating. Great work throughout this series. I continue to learn a ton. :-)

@jaroslavlajta
@jaroslavlajta Год назад
@@Dncyx DMX is mainly used in event lighting, there is a ton of videos and tons of dmx softwares. IMHO, using an iPad for "timecoding" the lights for a video isn't something you'll see on a set. It's not really practical to use it. You'll probably see a big lighting console such as GrandMa 2, Tiger touch, ChamSys MagicQ.

On the spotlights, did y'all have a gobo in there to achieve the 'cutting through light' effect? referencing the spotlights right around 1:40 into the video.

While I’m sure not the same. I’ve seen on adorama Matthews C clamps with 2 baby 5/8 pins. 6” and 12” clamps. I came to comments for the same reason lol
@MK-ds1ib

Matthews also appear to have ones more similar with junior connections. B&H and adorama have them. May be in back order tho

Wow. I’m trying to film something similar. I have some questions; 1) For the 300x lantern, what did you rig it to to travel smoothly? 2) What is on the two backlights to give it that floor pattern?
@samuellynch5798
@samuellynch5798 Год назад
Hi Kayanne, For the 300x, I assume they used a Hi Roller or Combo Stand and Casters with an Electric head and junior pin receiver for mobility. The 300x ballast also has V-Mount battery capability for even more freedom. As for the backlight pattern, that's referred to as a "gobo" and can be purchased in kit alongside the Aputure Spotlight mount. Most Spotlight units, such as LEKOs, have a slot where a Gobo cutout can be inserted and then properly focused with the light's lens to achieve that hard shadow texture like in the video. Hope this helped!
