The creative force behind American rock band Creedence Clearwater Revival, John Fogerty wrote, sang and produced their instantly recognizable classics “Proud Mary,” “Bad Moon Rising,” “Born in the Bayou” and more.
Join him as he discusses his new memoir, Fortunate Son: My Life, My Music, and hear about his epic journey from his Northern California roots, CCR’s incredible success in the ’60s and ’70s, his retreat from music and public life to his hard-won revival as a solo artist who finally found love.

What’s amazing is he writes songs like Born on the Bayou and Green River and yet he was from California and didn’t live anywhere near New Orleans or a river or a swamp! And yet some people call some of his songs Swamp music. Some how he was able to channel the feeling and sounds of the South and outdoor natural life! How he was able to do this, I have no idea. It’s like he was an Antenna and some higher power sent the songs thru him! And he was taking notes!

John and I are about the same age. I played in bands for a long time but eventually made the decision to give up bands. Why? Because of rock musicians. Just no way to get along with them for an extended period time. Decided to go it alone, just me and my guitar. So much better.

It's funny to hear him tell the story about his parents harmonizing and him picking up something different going on there. I was 8 years old when the first CCR album came out and my older brothers had bought the album. I was still three years away from starting my life as a guitarist but I listened intently to songs like I Put A Spell On You and dissected all the parts...Tom's rhythm part...Stu's bass....John's feedback guitar solo...same fascination with the mechanics of music.

The Proud Mary story is amazing!. To me it shows that it was just meant to happen. He wrote what is now considered a standard rock song. Every garage band in the world learns how to play Proud Mary! It’s a classic and it’s fun and easy to play! Only a few chords and your rolling down the river! I learned how to play Proud Mary and Bad Moon Rising first early on. Gloria is another one! Three chords! He’s a songwriting genius!

I'm glad somebody else said it (so I'll just repeat it) the album "Cosmo's Factory" is one of Rock's all-time greatest LPS, and Mr. John Fogerty is -and has always been, one of Rock's greatest front men! He WAS (or IS) CCR, as far as I'm concerned (as Jeff Lynne was E.L.O., Bryan Ferry was Roxy Music, Brian Wilson the Beach Boys, Mark Knopfler Dire Straights, Tom Petty the Heartbreakers, etcetera). But John got absolutely SCREWED over by his record company (not uncommon), but also by his BANDMATES, AND his very own BROTHER...It's an unbelievable story, what this guy (who gave us all so much) had to go through; it was not fair...I'm happy John found true love (he deserved that), and (it seems like) SOME peace of mind about all that "history"...I can't say here what I'd like to do to the jerks that screwed him over, for so many years...Here's to YOU, John Fogerty! You da man!

He seems like a very down-to-earth guy and it is a shame that he and his former CCR band mates do not even speak to each other anymore. I doubt that they "took the side of the record company", as you put it. They merely took the best deal that they could get. The record company wanted to hold on to John because John was "the goose that layed the golden egg". Then, Doug and Stu and Tom were off the hook. They simply took the best deal that they could get, under the circumstances by taking what the record company offered them... and you can bet that the record company knew how to sweeten the pot just enough to get Doug and Stu and Tom on their side. NOTHING PERSONAL to John. It was just business. Sorry about John feeling betrayed, but what else could the other three do about it? They weren't business experts by any means... just doing the best that they could. (My 2 cents).

Jeanie Ruter Tje universal law is "Be Worthy." And that is what John Fogerty did. The fact that he did not go after the money when he did not sell out meant that he was worthy of success in his own terms years after the break up. He is far more successful and happier than he ever was today. Respect, fame, fortune, following, legendary status, etc came to him coz he desrve it esp after all the pain and suffering he went through.

@@jeanieruter2177 what could the others have done? They could have supported John by taking his side against Fantasy Records! However, John’s Brother, Tom, Cook & Clifford conspired with Fantasy, against John. Cook is the ah who conspired with Fantasy to sue John for sounding like Creedence when John wrote & released “ Old Man Down the Road!” Also, John was trying to get the contract re-negotiated with no in -put from the other 3 from Creedence! As expected hes wearing a flannel shirt i would love to own my self and i,m 62 now I have been afan of CCR John Fogherty since i was 12 years old. I think he is the best rock'n roll singer and musician of the 60's & 70's His songs are the deeds of his art. I was lucky enough to see them in the 70's in Australia. The concert is on YT. He looks like someone you would never pick a fight with always has looked so tough. One of the great legends of Rockin Roll! he plays his guitar beautifully thats all i can say. And look at his hands they are instruments of rock mastery. After watching the video he comments about train of fools the song we go through life starting out as fools towards God and our world belief but at some time in Life we need to get off that train and get on the train of the wise by believing this Bible verse ( John 14:6 )which is true and makes us wise men on the train to heaven. Amen May you make it to that train John i pray that for you. Romans 10 if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved. 11 For the Scripture says, “Everyone who believes in him will not be put to shame.”

Very disappointed in Fogerty. He seems to be a gigantic BS Artist. He tells a different story about Proud Mary on another vid. He says he was practicing guitar and he liked to sometimes listen to classical music. He said he was fooling around with the opening of Beethoven's Fifth - Da Da Da DA. Then he played it in a different rhythm and he had Proud Mary. He said he played Da Da Da Da/ Da Da Da Da/ Da Da Da Da/ Da Da and then strummed. If you play Da DA DA DA. on a guitar (like me) and play it a little faster on guitar - its the beginning of Proud Mary.

If anything he should just be quiet about these things. In case you haven't yet, go take a listen to the early Golliwogs records, with Tom Fogerty as songwriter and lead vocalist. What? Tom turned against his own brother. These morons decided they should be the songwriters and ruined a great thing. I'm sure John has an ego, everyone does, but jealously is why this was ruined, and when John gave them the chance to write, what happened? The entire thing imploded and it was a joke. As someone who has been in his shoes, and while the rest of the band is basking in the glory of success, someone has to be home woodshedding the fucking tunes. Someone has to spend countless, countless hours doing the actual work. As the main and usually only songwriter in any band I've been in, I can assure you that I spend at least 10 times the amount of time on writing the songs as anyone else does learning to play them. When you have someone as brilliant as John, you simply say thank you and get out of his way.

Tom's musicianship is not the issue. It's was his lack of ability to have any love or respect for his little brother, that was the problem. That gap in his soul was filled with jealousy and anger. It broke John's heart. He loved all 3 of the guys. He was doing all his hard work for all 4 of them - not just himself. AND they rewarded him by constantly ridiculing him for being so driven - a great way to say thanks. The last sentence Tom said to John before he died was that he wanted John to know that there ex manager was still his best friend. Nice way to say goodbye. apparently that guy didn't turn up at his funeral. Tragically sad really - and of course it deeply affected John for many years - and it is a very relevant part of his story.
