In the early evening of May 12th, 2003, 10-year-old Holly Jones told her parents she was going to walk a friend home. She never returned. Everyone held out hope that she would be found safe, but when the little girl was discovered murdered it kicked off one of the largest manhunts in Toronto history.
In this episode, the lead homicide detectives reveal the tactics used to catch Holly’s killer. And Holly’s mother shares memories of her daughter - and her family’s efforts to fight child pornography.

Born and raised in Toronto, I remember this story so well. Very happy to hear that Holly's brother James has gone to Bereaved Families of Ontario/Toronto. I am a co-facilitator with BFO/Toronto, as I have lost my mother in the same year as Holly. My Mom's death was a high profile case as well in Toronto in that year. Grieving never ends - even 19 years later - and my thoughts and prayers are with your family always. RIP Beautiful Angel. You're Never forgotten. Don't worry Maria, my Mom's with Holly. We watched the news of your daughter together and my Mom had teared up. I know she's taking care of your little girl.

@@BeBrave13 Hi, yes, my Mom was the first nurse who died from SARS in Canada in June 2003. Her name was Nelia Laroza. Thank you so much. My Mom and I were watching the news when Holly was abducted just weeks before my Mom got sick. My Mom was holding her rosary praying and praying Holly would be found safe, but when we saw the news a few days later -- it was horrible. It hits so close to home, because it's In Toronto, you know? We think we're safe at home, but we're not. I remember my Mom crying with Holly Mom when she was pleading for her to come home. It hit my Mom hard when she heard the news. Then weeks later (May 23, 2003), she got SARS from the second outbreak and passed on June 29th, 2003. My last phone call with her, she was crying and on her way to ICU and she said something along the lines of always be careful when you're out and I know she was thinking of Holly. I hope the Holly's family knows that grieving comes in waves and that they are able to grieve in peace and the media leaves them alone too. Grieving is your OWN journey. No one can tell you otherwise. Grieving is so intimate, and when it's all over the news, it's harder to heal. We never get over the pain, but we do get used to it. Sending love to all and please be safe. I hope Holly's family knows they are very supported and loved. My Mom's 19th death anniversary is coming up this week, and then Holly's story came on and I watch Crime Beat because Netflix has gotten boring - but when I saw Holly's story, all of everything that happened in Spring/Summer 2003 came flooding back. My Mom was so affected by Holly's abduction. I know they're together and she's with Holly right now. My Mom was the best Mom ever (to me and my brother Kenneth) and I hope Maria knows Holly's with her and taking care of her.

I don't think that anyone that killed a child should ever be put out for parole I think they should do time and stay in jail permanently I don't think he should be let out ever

Another thing most people don’t talk about is the effect these crimes leave on the detective’s that try to bring the scumbag to justice. These cops are also fathers, uncles, brothers, sisters and so on . This sh!t stay’s with them forever. The only way to erase these painful memories is to let the authorities exact street/ prison justice on these pieces of filth. It won’t bring that beautiful angel 👼 back but it might help them get past the trauma they see.

I never knew Holly, but I know people who did. Her family lived very close to where I used to live (I moved to another city almost 10 years later, but it's not because of what happened). Around the time of her disappearance, we had police officers talk to our school. My dad even submitted his DNA willingly, and when they found Holly, the police talked to our school about safety and did so once more when Cecilia Zhang was kidnapped and murdered. I also never knew Cecilia, but both girls were very close to me in age. I used to wonder what would happen if both kidnappings and murders happened to me or someone I directly knew, and I can't even fathom that because I did lose a classmate around the same time because of his very long battle with cancer. Our school was heartbroken. I remember that my parents were very scared to let my siblings and me outside. Other people in our community were too, and what happened you will never forget. People like my dad even thought at first both murders were connected (They aren't, which we found out later). We don't know why bad things happen, but we can learn from them. I know both girls are in a better place now, and I offer my love and support to both families 👼🏻❤️🕊

Welcome to canadian justice system where they protect this kinds of monsters! The sad truth is that when this monster goes to prison he will be isolated from other inmates coz of fear of being him beaten or killed.

Rest In Peace sweet HJ. I did not know this family personally but remember this tragedy and attending a part of the funeral as support. No one truly understands one's pain unless you've experienced such loss yourself. I'm hoping over the years this family has been able to find solace in prayer as they continue to heal. I'm truly sorry this happened. Credit to the detectives that resolved this crime with such few leads. Local police depts continue to fight against these acts of violence and rely on their communities to support them during the process. We know that rehabilitation for criminals is important, however justice for victims matters more. It has been almost one decade in Ontario since Bill-C-26 passed to amend the criminal code and sex offender information registration act. This legislation is important ongoing as communities need to be kept informed in order to be vigilant and safe. Longer sentencing and institutionalizing people for crimes related to sexual violence should never be considered a crime.

Everybody deserves to know if these sickos are living in your neighbourhood. In my world, the only way for people to protect their children is to see who they are is by tattooing their foreheads. You reap what you sow. Information about these sickos is key for all parents. They NEVER change it's a sickness. Sounds fair to me. I hope peace will find the poor parents. R.I.P. Holly.

We never allowed even the chance. We just let our kids know we need you to know never ever leave school and stay in that office and even if you have to say we want the police to come pick you up. We also never let our kids stay with anyone until we met and had a good idea the family were aware that we will make sure their kids are safe and watched and understood that no risk is ever to be allowed and no one will be in our home and we meant it.. and it was because we never wanted to allow anyone to later say ohh your 10yo kid said I can walk alone.. that is absurd... I made sure .. if we walk up and could not be invited in and visit even 10 min or they said they had any reason we did not let them go.. anyone who thinks they need to prepare we do not care about how messy or anything... we want to meet our kids friends parents. I knew in 10 min if they were aware why as most we met said come in and we said we just as you know want tomake sure if we need can trust you and let you know if you need us we will too...
