Potato crisps are totally addictive, and it's probably a guilty secret with many Brits that we enjoy a crisp sarnie from time to time. Yes, carbs-on-carbs. Some countries call our crisps 'potato chips' - I don't think anybody knows why. The Spanish call them 'patatas fritas', fried potatoes. But then they also call potato chips (in the British sense) that as well. It's all massively confusing. In this video, I show you how to make your own delicious homemade crisps. Making crisps is something you can do at home quite easily. I also show you the very challenging task of making crisp sarnies. A sarnie is simply a sandwich.

What a fantastic video Keefcooks. I remember when crisps where only 7p a bag when I was at school in the early 80's. I also remember my parents giving me £1 for dinner money which I spent in the first 15 minute break. I managed to eat at least 10 bags before lessons started. I loved the crisps with the little blue bag in and SHAKE IT LIKE YOU NEVER SHOOK BEFORE! :) Oh, I miss them days... (Lucky we had free school dinners or I would have starved)

Ohhh cheese & onion crisps, thick butter on one slice, Dairylea spread on the other slice, my childhood heaven. I still have one now and then. Absolutely fantastic ❤️🫶🏼❤️

Summer of 1995 I was in a pub in Cirencester and a chap told me about crisp packets with the blue paper twists of salt. I’ve told many friends about that because it’s just the sort of thing that is all too easy to forget. Don’t know why I think it’s important, but I do. My best pal who is 20 years older told me that in his childhood, margarine was the color of lard & came with yellow coloring one could mix in to make it appear more butter-like. Thanks for the memory AND for making me want to fry my own crisps. Cheers to you and the missus. I wouldn’t have thought you were old enough!😊

Oh that crunch.😊 I grew up with the salt in a twist of paper era, and crisp sarnies an' all, still the temptation I can't resist. My husband is a philistine, he likes only sour cream and onion flavour. 😱

Keith you can do salt and vinegar. It’s easy after you soaked and dried the spuds soak them in vinegar for half an hour. Then dry and fry them. Once again thanks for the lovely recipe.

Love a crisp sarnie. It's one of those foods that no matter where you're from, what age you are, are just nice. I feel like a kid again when I have one, and glad of it too. Think i'll have to make some crisps myself now.

When I was in chemotherapy and couldn’t eat raw things, I used to put chips (ok, crisps if you insist) in my sammich instead of lettuce. Lots of flavor and crunch! An acceptable substitute. Still do it sometimes... fun recipe Keefie!

I thought I was the only one mad enough to make my own Crisps. In the dim and distant past a Cheese and Onion (Cob in my home town) Roll would have Crisps added to it. Great. When I work in Iraq there were local Crisps available but I decided that I would make my (our) own. I used the Speed Peeler and the potaoes and the oil temperature where not as advanced as yours. In later years it was not uncommon to added Worcesta (deliberate tuncating of the word) Sauce to a bag of Crisps. You have jerked me into making them again. Thanks for nudging my nostalgia.

Back in my High School days in the early 70's I would have chip/crisp roll, the salt & vinegar flavour. We would buy a buttered roll and a pack of chips and just put the crisps in! Yummy!! Never heard of a sarnie, we call them a sanger! Brings back memories Keef. Love Mrs Keef Kooks colour coordination hot pink and purple, gorgious. Love Debra from Downunder. xxx

Nice video Keef, I’ve cooked crisps for the family many times over the years and can confirm how important the potato variety is to getting a good crisp, that stays golden whilst cooking to the crispy stage. Unfortunately I’ve not found even different bags of the same variety to be consistent. Mostly I just stumble over a sack of spuds that make a fantastic chip. That never seems to burn but just stays golden , crispy yet fluffy on the inside, they will be great for crisps. I’m rather interested in the distilled vinegar I’ve not come across that tip before so I will try it. And thankyou for that. Enjoyed the video. Dave

I’ve only ever known Walkers to have the colours they do now. Walkers didn’t used to dominate the market though, Golden Wonder and Tudor did. Golden Wonder’s colours were: Dark blue - Ready Salted, Pale blue - Salt and Vinegar, Green - Cheese and Onion, Red - Tomato.

Make your own salt flavoured vinegar, by simply pouring salt into vinegar, then boiling the vinegar away. Also, apply the flavouring whilst your crisp are still wet.

Smith crisps I remember them well but hated getting the one loaded with salt. I still eat crisp butties. Keef I made sweet potato crisps in the microwave and oh my I couldn’t stop eating them, down side only could make a handful at a time. I know you would like them and the mrs too👍

I may have to attempt these soon in my air fryer. (Not for health concerns but just because I'm lazy. ;) ) I bet the butter will definitely make them palatable. ;) Speaking of chip butties, in Israel I came across the special magic for falafel in pita: add `chips.

Great Video Keef. Do you or any of your viewers remember Hedgehog Flavoured Crisps/Chips from the 80's? They were sold mainly in public houses (Pubs)... They got withdrawn from the outlets by Trading Standards because they did not contain any Hedgehogs only Pork and Fat. Therefore it was classed as "False Advertising" Funny but true!

Kinda fitting I just saw this video, I just watched an episode of Good Eats. Alton Brown recommends a kevlar glove for use on the mandolin. Granted he was slicing garlic, so needed more grip than on a spud.

I was waiting for you to comment on your "Chitting Potatoes" but you didn't :) Also, the reason the potatoes go crispier when you put them into vinegar is because of "osmosis" the addition of vinegar to the water drives water out of the potato cells. The reduced water content of the potatoes makes them go crispy on the outside when they are fried because the vinegar boils off at a lower temperature than the water it has displaced. Science, it works!
@Keefcooks
@Keefcooks 5 лет назад
Ah, right. I remember doing osmosis at school.

@KieronMiddleton

@@johnkirton833 I don't see why not, but the chunkier the chip, the more soft inside you'll get vs crispy outside so it might not be as apparent.

Good, crisps should be thin and crumble with a single bite like Smiths Crisps do for me too. I don't like all this tortilla thickness 'posh crisps' no thanks. I think adding the white vinegar is like when Chip Shop owners add a glug of Dry Whyte to their chipped potatoes soaking in water, changing the PH draws out the last of the moisture from the potato and also the starch giving the best possible results for deep frying them. Something like that
