As a crocheter, I would have been pulling the needle through the hole rather than using my fingers to remove the loops, so I plan to use your technique. Great instructional videos and gorgeous rugs.

+C.S. Weaver Your way is really the correct way to crochet, however I crochet my rugs so tight I can not do it that way. I have taught crocheters how to make rag rugs and they do it the traditional way. The traditional way is not incorrect, however it is not near as tight and sturdy under your feet. If I were you I would experiment a bit with each technique and see what is best for you. Thanks for your note and thoughts. Good Luck and thanks for viewing!!!!

I recently took apart a braided rug I made 13 years ago, for a cleaning and decided to crochet it back instead of braiding (hopefully the next cleaning will be easier) I've been crocheting for a few years now and never thought of a crocheted rug until I saw your videos. thanks for all the fun ideas and helpful hints.

@@RagRugsbyErin Unfortunately, I set aside all my crafting, when I moved in with my mom to take care of her and had no space. Even trying to set my sewing machine on the kitchen table would upset her. She had alzheimers/dementia. She passed away and I've moved to an apartment. Now to get the rest of my stuff out of storage and get back to crafting.

I just made my very first rag rug, thanks your videos! It is 2x3. Inches, that is, not feet. My sheet yarn was 1/8" wide. It seemed like a good size for a dollhouse. My only problem was inserting stitches whenever I needed to, but keeping it symmetrical at the same time--an age-old problem, I'm sure! Thanks, Erin :)

Has anyone tried to crochet an oval rug using plastic grocery bag yarn ie Plarn? I do sleeping mats and larger ground cover rugs for the homeless but now I want to do a oval rug for myself for outside when I am gardening on the deck. My friend and me use T-shirts that don't have side seams. we cut and yank them to make it tubular yarn and just do a eye-slit at the end and attach the yarn that way. At 2nd hand stores we can get big boxes of rag t-shirts for about 5 bucks a box or better we go to church free shops and get the worse conditioned, off colored ones to use for our rugs. No sewing required.

Diane, Nice of you to write and share with me. I love Nova Scotia. I have been to Halifax but it has been since 1994. Beautiful. I love small town living. So glad you are enjoying yourself. Selling I think is a challange. I do best by making what I love and putting a price on it if I am willing to sell it. I just share my love of rag rugs and someone just surprises me now and again and has to buy one. I focus on the joy of making. I think that it takes time but as more and more people know you make them you will sell more. You will not get rich however if you enjoying yourself and perhaps selling some it adds to the fun that you are already having. Stay warm. I wore sandals and capris today. lol

If you mean a crochet hook you could order it online from Michael's or Joann Fabrics. If you are meaning the pins I sometime use to mark my stitches: They are called stitch markers or I just use safety pins. Safety Pins are very inexpensive. Both can be bought at Michael's, Joann Fabrics or perhaps Wal-Mart. Thank you for viewing and I hope you get to watch some of my other videos.

Some are just stringier than others. You might be just critical of your own work. I buy 100 % cotton when possible, percale is my favorite or an minimum of 50 % cotton. No Sythetic sheets. I am so glad you are enjoying yourself. Update me if time permits. Enjoy the rest of your weekend.

Hi Erin, how would it be to use jelly rolls for this project.and when would you use a much larger hook? Thanks. Do love your tutorials.
@RagRugsbyErin
@RagRugsbyErin 5 лет назад
Jelly Rolls could work but my main concern is the fabric should be washed and run through the dryer before you make the rug so when you do wash the rug it doesn't loose it's shape. You can you use it 2 1/2 inches just use a big enough hook. 16 mm to 22 mm. Or cut it in half and use a 10 mm to 16. You can visit my website www.ragrugsbyerin.com Reply ·

@RagRugsbyErin
@RagRugsbyErin 6 лет назад
+Marvel Christenson You can use old clothing but I would not mix with sheets unless they were similar materials. I use t-shirts but I use similar materials like jerseys in that rug. Materials with stretch behave differently than material that doesn't have stretch. I prefer sheets the best. Hope that answers your question.

I watched your youtube tutorial. I started my first rug. I have a lot of peaks and vallies (lumps and bumps) but got it basically in a circle. The craziest thing is when I changed to my second color and fabric it is waffling now. I have a beautiful ruffed edge. It would be nice if I wanted that for a table lamp but I want to make rugs. I stopped after the second row. Please advise me what do I need to do.

Just beginning rag rugs....am attempting it with fleece. I am having a problem understanding how to do corners. I understand your videos but as the rug grows, how do you know when to start doing the double stitch in the holes?
@RagRugsbyErin
@RagRugsbyErin 8 лет назад
+Merilee Beck You actually do 2 single crochets in the same hole when you are add stitches. I double crochet is a different stitch. You start adding stitches right from the beginning. If you do not add stitches your rug will cup up like a bowl. If you add to many it will look like leaf letture (all wavy). If you start watching the video at 7:45 seconds (part 1) through the end it will talk about that as well as show you in the early stages of the rug. Then watch all of part 2 and it goes into more detail. Then if you go to my channel and view "Keep and Oval Rag Rug Flat & Smooth". It talks in more detail when the rug is larger. That video is down closer to the bottom of my video list. I hope that helps. Viewing my video on a computer is alway a better choice because I often add printed text to give clarification. The printed text only shows up on the computer. Have a great day and good luck!

Can you please share how many sheets and sizes you use for this project?
@RagRugsbyErin
@RagRugsbyErin 9 лет назад
Alice Carnes Alice, I am working on a similar rug like I started in this video right now. I never use the whole sheet all at one time so this is just a guess. I am working on the 5th partial sheet now and I will be using 6 different sheets for this project. I will use one fitted twin sheet and probably 2 or 3 flat queen sheets before the rug is completed. So 3 or 4 sheets is what I think you will need to complete this project. Of course it will depend on how big you want to make your rag rug. I hope this is helpful. You may want to watch my videos "Crochet Rag Rug Shape, Color and Material 101 Tutorial" and "Choose the Correct Materials & Easy Rag Rug Laundering" they have some general good information that you might find helpful. Good luck and thanks for viewing.

@RagRugsbyErin

+Christina Cole Christina, I rarely sell my rugs. Most are gifts. Some are trades and many I keep, because I mostly teacher and feel like I need to use them as examples. I think it truly depends on your market. I see some go for waaaay to cheap and I see them on Etsy for expensive. Maybe you can let me know what you can get for yours. I will eventually sell some as I get too many. Many people are very generous with me so I try to repay with a rug. Sorry I was not more help!! Have a great day.

I am still confused a bit! There is a stitch and there is a hole. A hole is not a stitch right?
@RagRugsbyErin

I am using those words synonymous sometimes. There are many holes in your rug however I am trying to convey the point of entry is this hole that I am showing you.

+Cheryl Smith I am sorry, I do not know anything about making a doll basket. You may want to go to my channel and watch Rag Rugs by Erin Episodes 1. There are 4 parts and it does not show a exact formula however it gives you the feel of how to judge when to add extra stitches. Good Luck!!

What size is the rug that you are making? Length and width? I want to make a rug a certain size and need to figure out how many stitches to start with.

Hi honey can I use duvet cover
@RagRugsbyErin
@RagRugsbyErin 4 года назад
Yes, as long as you wash and dry it first so the rug holds it's shape once it's washed. It may not rip as well as sheets though.

What sorts of wrinkle? Wash it perhaps? I have a video on laundering. Called "Choosing the Correct Materials and Laundering your Rag Rug".

@RagRugsbyErin
@RagRugsbyErin 9 лет назад
You can take a picture and email me ragrugsbyerin@gmail.com I think it will have to be undone through the pucker and you will have to a add a few to several more stitches as you go around the corner s. The sheet yarn is the time consuming part the crocheting is less time consuming. Also you could watch " How to keep a rag rug flat and smooth" . That is under my Playlist "Rag Rug information and Help Videos".

There is not a persa part 3. There is however a video I made that shows how to finish an oval rug. Here is the playlist that includes part 1 and 2, how to finish the rug and 2 other videos that are helpful for this beginner rug. I hope that helps. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-z_M1TU4eMb8.html I have 90 video videos on my channel. You may want to look at my Facebook page, Rag Rugs by Erin. I post my blog and other rag rug info there as well.

Hi Erin. I saw a post from someone that said they try to avoid the stair stepping look when they change colors. Do u think it really matters? Also, I wondered if u ever used microsheets? Thank u. Beth.
@RagRugsbyErin
@RagRugsbyErin 7 лет назад
I have not had luck with microfiber sheets. They do not rip well. If you cut them perhaps it would be okay. I have done that technique, avoiding the stair step, however I am unsure how I feel about it. It is a rag rug and I like the idea that it still looks handmade. I have not done a video on that because at present I am not using it in my rugs. I may change my mind. I think it is just a personal preference and each person will make their rag rug unique to them. That is one of the things that make them so special. :-) Thank you.

Erin Halvorsen thank you so much. I love the look of the colors mixing and the post I saw criticizing it sailing it was less professional. But you are so right. It's just preference. It's so hard starting out learning from videos because. When u make mistakes or have questions it's difficult.thank u so much for your input!
