I made rag rugs in 1980. You could buy fabric cut a couple inches on rolls by the pound. My strips were cut with pinking shears and used a cut in the fabric to connect strips together or tied them together. I still have and use mine 42 years later and they have never frayed. I even made heart shaped rugs.

Many fewer steps than this method! I made them too.
@joane8651

I made them back in the day, and I filed down a plastic toothbrush to make a large hook, we were a little more practical back then.

Yes the cut and slip connection was the old way, and I can one up the toothbrush. Granny and those of that day whittled their crochet hook from a hardwood stick .They also used old clothes to make the strips of fabric.

@@dianeblankenship3662 oh yes! I’m thinking old t-shirts would make great rag rugs (instead of this quite expensive designer quilting cotton!). Keeping fabric out of landfills is the name of the game these days!

Hi from South Africa 🇿🇦 everything here is ridiculously expensive so I made rugs (many) out of old sheets and old clothes and they are amazing, we all love them. I ripped them 😁They also wash up quickly in the machine, which I worried about before. I enjoyed it so much and am so glad I would reuse, reduce and recycle 🤯 ps I really like those colors

This is a great project! Years ago I made a round crochet rug (Double Crochet stitch) big enough to put under my round dining room table. I still have that rug today. It's so heavy, my cats love it and they can't destroy it! LOL Then I made a square one for my bathroom. Back then they didn't have jelly rolls so had to cut the fabric into strips, jelly rolls would make this so much easier. Thank you for the reminder how to make!

This was being done in the 1800’s and I promise you that they weren’t using stitch markers. I remember both of my Grandma’s and a Great Aunt making them and using a safety pin. There is no need for all the ‘fluff’ being shown. My Grandma’s even tied the strips together instead of sewing and they ripped the strips to start. My Great Aunt made them with bread bags. Who else remembers that?
@lindacajigas3315
@lindacajigas3315 Год назад
I made mine with old grocery bags.
@minkademko2335
@minkademko2335 Год назад
Some people prefer a more upscale method for their own reasons. If the family tends to walk away with your common safety pins, stitch marker pins can be designated "off limits" to them. Buying fabric in colors you choose, opposed to using random scraps, means you can get the colors to match your phoophoo decor. You know, I've seen this done without a hook... I think it's called "finger crocheting". I prefer whatever gets the job done my way. ❤️

Thank you! this is a fun craft. I have made these with old t-shirts cut into strips and crocheted. Jelly rolls will be more colorful! Her hook is larger than I have used, that will make it easier too. I think a small "rug" in reds and greens would be perfect for my Christmas mug! Another idea might be for a hot plate on my buffet table. Nice to meet an old craft in a new way.

@peggyreinhold886
@peggyreinhold886 Год назад
That's a nice project, too. A friend of mine make these rag rugs from old t-shirts and they are always so handy. For an oval add in between the sides some more double stitches and for a round one start with only three center chain stiches and add double stitches over the whole round. If you make not enough double stitches it would Form a kind of a bowl, if you make to many stitches it will be wavy. By both options you has to go back, unreval the stitches until your rug is laying flat and start again adding more or less double stitches. Hope this make sence. Have a wonderful season, greetings from Germany 😃🎅🎁

I was watching Donna Jordan last night and she was sewing pairs of 10” squares together and she was sewing really fast. She reminded sewers that fast wasn’t the point! She has been sewing for 40 ish years but sewers should sew as fast or slow as they are comfortable because the process should be enjoyable not just speedy.

I made rag rugs like this in the 90’s. I bought cheap used sheets from thrift stores because I didn’t have the funds for new fabric. I sewed end to end but didn’t bother with a bias fold, I just sort of kept it rolled as I crocheted it. I have crocheted since I was a girl but just learned to read crochet patterns as a grandma. 😂 You can learn, Misty. I started knitting 8 years ago and knowing how to crochet made it easier.

Is that little pop-up part on the bottom of your iron (where it pops up from the fabric when you are done putting pressure on it) a part of your iron or is it an iron accessory. I noticed your webpage said it was sold out. Also, very happy you included how to use the bias tape maker as I think I bought mine in the early 80s and never used it. Finally, I love in your intro that you show pieces of your life. A lot of sewers don't do that, but I felt it was cool and it was not too long.

Lots of scraps left & I keep envisioning an oval rag rug beside the bed using those scraps. Maybe I can finally get it figured out.
