This is why my husband and I took off and came back married. We started planning our wedding SIX times and quit, because we were sick of all of the “input and advice” from family & some friends. We were sick of us saying we don’t want traditions photos and parents saying “oh you HAVE to have photo’s and the guest lists were getting NUTS... no mum we do NOT want to invite your 3rd cousin twice removed and their dog because we have NO idea who the eff that is... So we booked a weekend away, and came home married, they were pissed, but I told them straight we asked them to butt out, they wouldn’t so we did OUR wedding, OUR way... I get sick of seeing these mother’s who live their own life through their daughter... I wore a 1950s inspired black tea dress, with large white polka dots and a scarlet ribbon belt, which matched my lipstick. Once she calmed her tits, my mum said it was an OK dress and my dad said “it’s more you than a bloody meringue!” But I had said I would be marrying in a scarlet gown if they didn’t shut up... I have also worn my “wedding dress” to dinner for every anniversary since... oh and our wedding cost £1k including the hotel and registration papers, clothing and a dinner that night with the drunken friends who went with us (tho they had no idea it was a wedding, they thought it was just a weekend of beers) so our wedding dinner was a pub crawl n curry. In the afternoon we all had fish n chips and played crazy golf. My wedding dress was £75 when I found it online, but I went to try it in the store and it was on sale for £35! Total bargain. The money we had saved for our wedding initially... we paid into our mortgage. We are now mortgage FREE!! It honestly make me feel physically sick when I see these women wanting gowns that are £10k and up, it’s obscene to spend so much on one day, and one dress you never wear again. My sister had a massive wedding and started married life in debt in a rented property, they divorced, she was still paying off her first wedding when she married number 2... she’s on no3 now, and they’re divorcing. Every wedding was bigger than the last, and she still lives in rented accommodation. I spent sod all, our married stuck and we own our home outright. I think we definitely chose the better route. Everyone said it was the best non wedding, wedding they’d ever been to.

I live over seas’s so when she said “she lives 2 and a half hours away” I just started laughing because I have to take a 7 hour flight to get to my family and I only see them once every year if I’m lucky.

My mother has never been there for me in any way shape or form and is a selfish alcoholic, but sure tried to get her way with things in my wedding (which has been moved twice now due to Covid). Trying to invite her whole damn family who I haven't even seen since I was a kid after I told her we had the guest list done, wanting to have a mother daughter song that we choreograph... Yeah no.
