Today I used the Cub Cadet ST 100 walk behind string trimmer to clear overgrown weeds in front of our barn.

I have had the ST100 for a few years for my lawn business. I notice in videos when folks use the unit they try and hold the front of the unit up off the ground. I let the ball on the front of the trimmer guide the unit along. In my opinion it makes using the unit much easier to operate. I also adjusted my string guide up an inch not cutting on the dirt or ground level. The ball on the front was designed to act as a third wheel. Use it as such and the trimming job becomes easier.

keep a CLOSE EYE on that CONE part that drags the ground, my neighbor wore through his and grass, sand etc got up in there in / on a exposed bearing, and you can't take the thing apart, you have to buy a complete spindle

@@REVNUMANEWBERN Interesting comment. I have never heard anyone else having that experience. The actual ground surface the unit shares would dictate the future life of that cone area. Thank you.

@@billhendrickson5506 Hey Bill.. You sound like somebody with a bit of knowledge on these things. I'm currently looking for something to keep the long grass and small shrubs slashed and I noticed they sell similar equipment to this here (Laos) with steel blades. After watching this video and seeing what some of the DR brush trimmers can do.. my question is: On a job similar size to what Chrissy just did, how often would you need to stop to add more cord/string? Have you had any experience with these type of brush trimmers with steel blades attached. Pros/Cons? Thanks in advance mate
@billhendrickson5506

@@NowinLao How long does the string last? It all depends on what you are cutting. Normal weed growth the string lasts a long time. If your cutting or trying to cut tough, woody type growth you will experience more wear on the string. I suggest IF you purchase one of these machines to bulk buy the string and cut to proper length. You will save big time on string price(s). In my experience using the metal cutters. They are very dangerious. The knives are sharp and are spinnng at a high rate of speed.

I own one of those and love it for mowing wooded trails and the septic mound, I even mowed my yard a time or two when I was without a lawn mower for a short while. I use the cub cadet orange pre cut square string and they are awesome. It will even cut through small saplings if the strings are fresh.

Good job Christie! Had a DR similar to that, did great in rough ground. Over the years I’ve got everything cleaned up & leveled to where it can be mowed with a commercial zero turn once a month or bush hogged a couple times a season.
@HillsideAcres

It really is nice to have around for the areas we aren’t able to mow. That’s our plan over time too, to clean up these areas that it’s needed so we can just mow/brush hog instead.

It makes a,big difference if you cut in such a way that the uncut area is on the left. If on the right then the machine piles the cut grass in front of the wheels whereas the other way puts the cut material well away from the wheels. It took me a long time to figure that out! The machine almost pulls itself along when cutting on the left.
@1eddiepalmer
@1eddiepalmer Месяц назад
True. And the best mowing will be continuous along the same path, not back and forth. The cut will be much neater if the discharge is to the right.

I have the same unit and I found if you start on the outside and walk in a counter clockwise direction it discharges the material to the right, and onto the cut area and does not clog the discharge chute and bog down the motor.

Hi Chrissy. Nice job. I need one and a good looking operator.😉 I might be wrong but it seems they are very popular in Europe and Australia, or they used to be. Not sure. Us old guys could use something like that. I am currently working on adding wheels to my edger, trimmer. it ain't so easy at 86 years old. I don't have any tall grass so a weed whacker will do the trick. It is easy to see how you stay so trim!

I have found that if you use 2 strings 18" long at .155 gauge less chance they come off and don't break as easy with thicker weeds meaning longer time in between putting new string on, tight fit but doable

Purchased this walk behind trimmer at a reputable big box store. After putting in fresh, treated 91 non-eth gas..and checking for right amount of oil, would not start. Would NOT start. Had several bird strikes on it so figured it sat outside somewhere for a good portion of it’s life…ascertained it is 2021 model. Tore down and removed carb. The main jet was plugged. (from old gas when started at factory ????). After small eye dropper prime, started right up, but, didn’t run very long. After repeating this 6 times finally continued to run.

ABSOLUTE PIECE OF FREAKIN' JUNK WITH A COMPLETELY WORTHLESS WARRANTY! - Mine is less than a year old, started smoking during operation, oil turned pitch black, and I thought, "Great, burned valve or wasted valve guide, okay, 'Three Year Warranty' though, right...?" WRONG! Even though the machine has less than four hours of run time, the dealership said that the valves were out of adjustment, and that would NOT be covered... I said, "Hang on... You're telling me this thing's engine is such a colossal piece of shit that they expect the valves to be out of adjustment after being run FOUR HOURS?" First piece of Cub Cadet Equipment... LAST piece of Cub Cadet equipment. Happily going back to Husqvarna... AVOID CUB CADET LIKE THE PLAGUE, THEY DO NOT STAND BEHIND THEIR EQUIPMENT!
