Cubans react to the iconic Miami PBS show, Que Pasa USA?. Que Pasa USA was the first bilingual show in the United States based on Cuban-American family. Yoel a recent immigrant from Cuba and Mari a clueless Cuban-American has never watch it. And honestly, we cant tell you how many times you all have told us to watch it.

I showed my students one of your videos and they loved it. It also helped them to understand the differences. Thank you for your content! I enjoy it myself and I'm glad I am able to use it to educate my students! Much love, Free Cuba, and Bless the USA! ☺️❤️🇺🇸😊

I used to watch that show as a child. It’s really the most authentic portrayal of Cubans living in America. Unless you’re a part of the Cuban-American community, you’d view us as immigrants. However, the first wave of Cubans that came to America, the old guard, didn’t view themselves as immigrants. They viewed themselves as exiles. They weren’t here by choice. They didn’t didn’t come to America to build a better life in a new country. They were running for their lives. Being in America was never meant to be permanent for them. They hoped to return to their homeland one day. Unlike the first wave of Cubans that came to America, later generations of Cuban immigrants came here to stay. They’d never known a free Cuba. They’d never had the opportunities that a Pre-Castro Cuba had made possible for their grandparents and great grandparents. They saw themselves as immigrants and not exiles.
@aliceh8169
@aliceh8169 2 года назад
You are so absolutely right Reynold. That first wave of Cubans were very different in every conceivable way from later exodus. They went from having prosperous and thriving lives into unchartered territory starting from zero. They never intended to leave permanently and weren’t looking for “better opportunities”. They were looking to save their lives and keep their children from being pulled out of their homes to be taken into indoctrination camps. It was a very frightening and tragic experience. Most of these brave and wonderful people are dead now, and they never went back home.

Came to the US in 1971. Watched it when I was a child growing up in New Jersey. My entire family would watch this show. It really was our experience and, yes, my parents and their friends would toast every new year with “Proximo Año en Cuba” “Next Year in Cuba”. I’m 59 now and watched this with tears. Like Mari said, “Reminds me of my family.” “PROXIMO AÑO EN CUBA!”

I loved Yoel's reaction to Que pasa USA, I used to watch it in FL. I'm not Cuban, my ancestors came here as immigrants in the 1700s, but I had Cuban friends and a Cuban Spanish teacher in school so I heard how hard it was. My granddaughter has married a Cuban American. She learned to speak Spanish fluently in school so now she speaks half English and half Spanish to her children so they will grow up bilingual.

That's the best way. Kids pick it up easily. This ties us together, somewhere in our background our relatives had to leave their homeland (thee old country) because of war, famine, lack of opportunity or to flee from persecution. My grandmother (Busia) left Poland 🇵🇱 at the age of 16 with her bestie who was 18.She had to lie about her age. Imagine leaving everyone behind, maybe a letter would get through now and then. No phone calls or text messages. She never saw her parents again. Thank you for showing people what it's like when your freedom is taken away. Love you guys 💞🙏🏼🇺🇸 🇨🇺

I enjoyed watching that show. My parents were the total opposite. I never heard my parents say anything negative about America and they became citizens asap - I never once heard them say “when we return to Cuba “ or anything similar. I wasn’t even aware when we became citizens, my parents were not big on talking over things with us. One day they came home and they told us we were now citizens and this is your new name. When we first arrived my last name was Rodriguez Del Rey y Perez. Of course America doesn’t have time for all that BS so they basically tell you, your last name now is Rodriguez. When you become a citizen you can change your name so my father took Del Rey instead. It actually turned out to be a good thing, way too many Rodriguez in the phone book (we came in 66). I had no problem with it at all. Next day in school, I used my new name on all my work. The teacher asked me why I was using Del Rey instead of Rodriguez. I was like “Oh, didn’t you know, this is now my new name. Don’t remember how the rest of it went, but I’m thinking my mother had to go to the school and show documents my name had actually changed. I love this country. It has given us so much and our lives are so much better because my parents made the choice to leave all they knew behind. It was a sacrifice and for that I will always be grateful.

You should have Yoel react to the reboot of One Day At A Time (esp Season 1/Episode 9 - "Viva Cuba") as it is both comical and deeply dramatic. Rita Moreno's portrayal of Lydia and her story about Pedro Pan exodus is one of the most profound moments in Latino history, be it Cuba, Puerto Rico, Mexico, etc...) the feeling of what is left behind is a scar we, as Latinos, carry with us all of our lives. I saw was where someone left a joint on the coffee table. I guess Abuelo was a cigarette smoker, saw it on the coffee table and lit it. The next scene, abuelo is sitting on the couch with his feet up on the coffee table eating a plate full of donuts....lmao!!! It still trips me out seeing Steven Bauer on that show and then seeing him later starring in Hollywood movies. I am thankful that Yoel is able to enjoy this freedom here, when he expressed that at his first baseball game.

My father was very proud of being in the United States but like them he never imagined that we would never go back to Cuba. Un dolor muy fuerte para todos. My father made us promise to not return and visit until the Castristas fall. Although I long to visit I have decided to keep the promise. I think of my parents and what they lost and what they had to do to come to the United States. They came in 1961 my father and mother sacrificed worked unrelentingly and achieved greatness. Because of them my siblings and I have college degrees, are professionals and like them we also strive to achieve. I thank my parents for coming to the United States. I believe every Cuban, who isn’t aware of this show, should watch it just as much as Cubans from the island should inform us of things that developed in Cuba like musical acts like Cimafunk. I know a couple of old cubans that left Cuba when Fidel took control. They had a wonderful life, a house, their business… and they were forced to leave everything, they only could take with them their clothes… they always had the hope to return one day but they are in the 80s and that hope faded with a big sadness

Steven Bauer (born Esteban Ernesto Echevarría Samson; December 2, 1956) is a Cuban-born American actor. Bauer began his career on PBS, portraying Joe Peña, the son of Cuban immigrants on ¿Qué Pasa, USA? (1977-1980) and is perhaps most famous for his role as the Cuban drug lord Manny Ribera in the 1983 crime drama Scarface, in which he starred alongside Al Pacino and Michelle Pfeiffer. He also played the drug cartel leader Eladio Vuente in Breaking Bad and in Better Call Saul and as the retired Mossad agent Avi Rudin in Ray Donovan (2013-2020). Bauer was born Esteban Ernesto Echevarría Samson, on December 2, 1956, in Havana, Cuba, the son of Lillian Samson Agostini, a schoolteacher, and Esteban Echevarría, a commercial pilot who worked for Cubana Airlines. Bauer's maternal grandfather, whose family names were Samson and Bauer, was Jewish, and immigrated to Cuba from Germany, a refugee looking to escape the devastating effects of World War II. His mother's family was not gassed for some reason. Bauer's family emigrated from Cuba to the United States on Independence Day, 1960, when he was three years old, shortly after the end of the Cuban Revolution, settling in Miami, Florida.

Fans were shocked when photos surfaced of 57-year-old Steven Bauer going on a coffee date with his 18-year-old girlfriend. "I became aware of the relationship, the range of emotions for me was strange and still is, but I can tell you one thing: We love our daughter," her mother Gina said. "My husband was devastated," she continued. "He questioned his own parenting, and I questioned mine. What had we done to our precious daughter to make her think such a decision was wise?" "I told myself, there are worse things. She could be an addict or a bad person," she said, adding that her daughter is "committed to waiting until she is married to have sex." But both Gina and her husband struggled with the curious pairing -- at one point shutting her daughter out entirely.

Since you have been following Cuban TV personalities, Yoel should check out Alvarez Guedes. Guillermo Alvarez Guedes was a pioneer in Standup Comedy. I believe he was the first hispanic doing Standup Comedy. BTW, his jokes are not safe for work 😂 HE WAS REALLY GOOD!

Though not of Cuban descent, ( one of few, in Miami), I remember this program, mostly because I went to the same highschool as Rocky Echeveria AKA Steven Bauer. We are about the same age, though we ran in different circles. It definitely was a BIG thing here at the time.

Unfortunately The Citizenship test changes every year and it just gets harder without a understanding of English. My Aunt and uncle struggled doing it and still struggle with English. They got citizenship with the family loophole not the old spousal loophole. Because of their close relation with us and their guaranteed jobs when they got here (we had jobs already lined up for them already) and a couple of high school visas it was easier but still hard. It took three years of hard work too. I might not be Spanish but i know the hardship of immigration.

immigration is so broken in this country, despite our country being one of the most generous for it. But the whole system is just a big racketeering scam from the US government to get our money.... the legal pathways are so insanely impossible most people dont understand that it creates vacuums for illegal immigration. People think theres a "line" and thats laughable when you actually understand it. There is no line. and its just a frustrating and crazy expensive process.

@@YoelAndMari I feel your pain because we went through it. It took us more than a decade to get green cards. Lawyers charge thousands of dollars only to make copies of papers to submit them. And yes, Average Joe doesn't have a clue how visas, work permits, finger printing, immigration quotas, wait lines, etc etc work. And let's not even talk about how exhausting, stressful and immoralising the whole process is. I couldn't help but be bitter at my oath ceremony when i became a citizen. So, I feel ya.

@@YoelAndMari that’s why I get so annoyed when people say “get into the country the legal way.” When they saw that it shows that they have no clue at all of what it takes and how long it takes. I have some vague memories of my mom getting her citizenship I remember helping her studying for the questions but I had no clue of the process of the whole thing because I was just a kid. But now as an adult I realized that it probably wasn’t easy for her since she didn’t speak much English but she did it!

Watch the new Father of the Bride (2022), it’s a good movie. The original movies #1 & #2 were about an American Family but, the new one is based around a Cuban family living in Miami. The movie is based around the Father who follows normal Cuban culture bumps heads with his daughter who’s not so interested in having such a big fuss surrounding her nuptials. It’s a cute, hilarious movie. I believe you guys would enjoy is a lot.
