SOMEHOW the automatic electronic choke on some Cummins Onan p4500i and Westinghouse iGen4500i units gets unplugged during shipping leaving your brand new unit unable to start. Fortunately there is a simple fix to plug this choke back in! Follow this video if you have one of these unlucky units to get it started.

Actually opened it up and choke lever on your unit was not there on ours …. Wonder where it is. The other plug was still plugged in also

Same here. I homebrew installed a manual choke. Works fine now. I choke it to start and turn choke off once it fires up. Installed the choke pull on the front face.

Thank you for this I have been trying to figure out my Onan 4500i and why I have to manually choke it

Will never understand why Ducar put an solenoid operated automatic choke on these. First one I bought on line 3 years ago would not stay running because the choke did not turn off and just flooded the engine. I took it to Cummins. They were very nice about it , kept it 2 weeks because the problem for them apparently was intermittent. They finally determined it had a bad solenoind but no parts available. Mine was an early production and most of them had this problem or choke was unplugged like this tutorial. They had another one and gave me that even transferred my high altitude jet to it and this one has been fine. We camp every month so in 3 years this gen. has over 400 hrs on it. I use 10W30 Onan- Cummins oil in the winter and the 15W40 in the summer , it is expensive and looks like mineral oil. I have a Briggs&Stratton oil extractor I use to pump out the dirty oil because the drain plug deal is a real P.I.T.A. Also got a magnetic drain plug , think it is the same as the Wen. I do like the commentor here's idea of installing a manual choke on it which is what the Chinese should've done.

This is crazy, the same issue on many similar inverter generators, a snap lock plug falls off! Is this some sort of Chinese conspiracy or their version of a practical joke? So is this an issue right out of the box that the generators won’t start? Or does this issue develop after using it. If the latter, is it vibrating off because of a plug lock defect? Sir, when you reinstalled the plug, did you feel or hear a definite click that it locked in place? Did you take any preventative measures to insure that it doesn’t come loose again? This is unbelievable 🤣

what's that rubber hose called by the choke? That's the part that I am needing
@wereoutnabout
@wereoutnabout Год назад
Without knowing which exact one you’re missing I’m guessing either the hose going from carb to air filter or hose from fuel tank to carburetor. Larger hose is the one going to air filter. Smaller one providing fuel from tank. You can find hoses like these at hardware or maybe automotive stores

Hi. I’m having the same issue but the electronic choke is plugged in. I’ve had it for over a year and I don’t understand what’s going on… please help me. This is my only way to get power as I’m off grid. Thank you 🙏🏽

Hello! When is the last time you have ran your generator? Are you unable to get it started?
@znod9865
@znod9865 2 года назад
@@wereoutnabout Thanks for getting back to me 🙏🏽. I ran it everyday. I’m off grid. Today I found a small trick where can at least start it by myself. Before one had to hold the choke and the other pull the rope. Electric starter won’t work either, and it is plugged as well in the starter. I’m having the battery on a charge, unfortunately after few days it discharges (second time charging it). I know I’ve got two things going on there. And somehow the battery won’t take a charge while it runs. It’s been a nightmare for weeks now as winter is approaching quickly. In the past I had to fix disassemble the all choke part, the springs where half way out and a screw was missing cause nothing was tight. Luckily I’ve got a Lionenergy ME-XP (solar generator inverter) but sun will soon become scarce.

I am on my second iGen4500.... the first one ran great but the digital information center never worked. Westinghouse replaced it (after 6+ months of dealing with them). They sent me a new one. I have only 2 hours or so on my new one, and have been using it on the end of my property to build a chicken coop and suddenly this new generator will decide to turn the choke on which then cuts power output and or stalls altogether. I haven't checked the plug, maybe it's loose, but I am really trying not to lose it with these generators. I have a camping trip planned next week that has no electricity so am pretty worried that I may have to bring my huge loud open frame generator as a backup if this one continues to give me problems.

Ugh wtf! So my choke worked when manually crankek and manually choking it… but it won’t start with electric choke. Cracked it open and it was plugged in… soo frustrating

Oh bummer! Is it all the way plugged in? Maybe its slightly plugged in but not enough to make correct contact

mine worked for a year now it does not want to stay running. I found the choke is automatically positioning but I have to stop it from going off as soon as it strarts killing the motor. any ideas?
@wereoutnabout
@wereoutnabout Год назад
Not sure! I know other generators I’ve had the carburetors on them easily get gummed up from fuel sitting over long periods of time. If my generator won’t run I usually have to take the carburetor off and clean the Jets in it with carb cleaner. It’s relatively easy to do just have to look for videos showing how to remove a carb off a generator. To prevent the carb getting gummed up use fuel treatment like stabil in the gas tank of the generator. Once added to the fuel run the generator a few minutes. Then always use the fuel shut off valve and shut off the fuel, let the generator run until it sputters out of fuel. This will help remove as much fuel as you can from the carburetor to prevent gumming up again

I regret not having found this video sooner! Let me elaborate that I regret paying $446.11 to have a Cummins service center diagnose this exact same problem, for my generator. I purchased my p4500i February 2021, and wasn't able to use it until September 2022. That put me seven months outside of the One year parts and labor warranty! Although this seems to be a very common problem, there is no recall or other means from the manufacturer to the consumer to alert you of the potential problem straight out of the box. Who's really winning here!?
@wereoutnabout
@wereoutnabout Год назад
Yes it’s unfortunate!
@mikethebike7372
@mikethebike7372 8 месяцев назад
Come on now they didn't charge you $450 to figure out and plug in the choke. It likely needed parts like the solenoid or something.

@@horacesawyer2487 This is true and there are no limits on exaggerating either. I have the same gen and tool it to the Cummins factory service facility in Tucson. They gave me an estimate and performed the repair at a reasonable cost. Cummins is a huge and ethical company. Ask to see this guy's copy of the repair order which will show what they actually did in detail.
@williamolliges2622
@williamolliges2622 3 месяца назад
I called the authorized repair center and they want $649 bucks to diagnose a hot start / overload at 50%. Diagnostic fee that is 50% of the cost of a new generator is mind blowing. The guy’s comment is that most repairs cost more than the price of a new one. I’m gonna look at the choke, because it sounds like it may be sticking or not operating properly.
