The cam and crankshaft on your Cummins must work in perfect harmony with one another in order to ensure your engine operates smoothly as intended. The two are able to communicate with one another via the cam position sensor to communicate position to the ECM. In the event that the sensor is delivering faulty signals, your engine will experience poor overall engine performance. This is a genuine Cummins direct replacement unit to get you back up and running properly.
Watch us install a Cummins Cam Position Sensor 4921597 on a 2001 Dodge Cummins 5.9L.

Wade, I did most of my work from underneath the truck and left the electrical connector in place 'til the bolt came out. I also kept on the intake horn and boost tubing as it didn't seem to be in the way. The CPS popped right off after the bolt was out. Again from underneath I used a long screwdriver to pry on the sensor and it was off in 2 seconds. Once the sensor came out it was easy to get the elec connector off. Many roads to Rome I supposed but this worked for me.

OK ... I got mine done .. I used a 6" extension 3/8 drive , and a 3/8 drive 4" long 5mm ball socket .. and one of the Snap On ratchets 3/8 drive in a 1/4 drive ratchet .. You can see it pretty good when you lay over the engine with your head next to the brake booster ... Took about 3 hours to get it all apart and about 1/2 hour to put it back together .. I did remove the VP wire harness and vacuum line from the vacuum pump ..

So my 99 2500 threw P0336, I replaced crank position sensor and two months later got the same code. The tach does the same as in the video but every so often just works and the pickup studders a little bit then it quits again. Could that be the cam sensor being that they work together? Or should I check the crank sensor harness and connection?

I really appreciate finding this video as I have the same dead tach issue just starting on my '01. It dies for a few seconds while driving and pops right back - Anyone else find that this starts intermittently and then just dies altogether? Also, would it be possible to reach this from underneath? I'd rather crawl under than dig in from above. Thanks.
@thoroughbreddiesel
@thoroughbreddiesel 2 месяца назад
This was my truck, and the truck never actually died, it just ran rough. However, on the early truck with a CRANK position sensor, the truck would die when it lost signal. As for getting to it from underneath, I don’t think you will be able to access it because of the vacuum pump.

Lift pump failure, and you found it once you opened up the system. What we see in this case is that the VP was probably pulling its own fuel supply, but now that you have broken the circuit, you will need to replace the lift pump.

@@thoroughbreddiesel Thank you for the advice, no codes as of yet. Just this Friday it's stopped coincidentally after bumping the passenger side battery ground cable. My local shop did an intank lift pump replacement a year ago, so I'll look to see how I can check the pressure on it. It started again today while coasting, hesitating at 900 and not going down until I've braked to about 40km/hr then it drops to 800. Which it was also doing before. But now the rpm isn't bouncing in park. Sorry for such a long reply, but if you have any more advice I'd much appreciate it. Will try to check that lift pump pressure and check again for codes.

I hooked the boat up and went to the tag agency, which was not even a mile away, shut the truck off and came back to take the boat back to storage and had no gauges and no bus in the mileage ticket. Truck still runs and drives normal. I did some power testing and thought I had a bad PCM, replaced it but it didn’t fix it. I also replaced the cluster, no fix. Hey got an odd question but I have a 2002 3500 24v, I keep getting code p0336 crank position sensor but from what I can understand the 2002 doesn't have a crank sensor only cam. (Well my truck definitely doesn't) I have no rpms and a few lights on the dash also. I got the truck from my grandfather who purchased new in 2002 the only thing he had done was a pcm replaced back in the day. So my question is do you think it could be the wrong pcm installed causing the truck to look for the crank sensor? I get a rpm reading for 3-5 seconds on startup and I can see my rpms with a scan tool just nothing on the dash after the first start, I did replace my cam sensor anyways with no change. Thanks!
@thoroughbreddiesel
@thoroughbreddiesel Год назад
Need to dig into it further, by PCM, do you mean he changed the ECM? If he did, and it was from a 98 or 99 truck, this is your problem. Need to get the correct ECM.

@@thoroughbreddiesel thanks for the reply but no it was a pcm replaced, tested wires to the cam sensor and all tested fine, checked all grounds and leads still nothing but still looking into it, definitely a weird one

It is an internal code to the VP but we see it in pretty much all Dodges. If your not seeing anything different in the truck, you should be fine.

Need to know lift pump pressure and also what the actual vs. commanded rail pressure when starting.
@ignusa749
@ignusa749 4 года назад
yes on the lift pump! weak lift pump or the pressure bypass valve. you could have a vp44 bad... if it has not been done yet at 300k miles it is time to remove it and have it tested.. I did the shop truck at 275k miles... same thing as you.. it all started with a bad weak lift pump... get a pressure gauge and check the lift pump pressure at the vp44 should be at least 10 psi min.. a good lift pump will be 12 to 18 psi.. and the pressure regulator on the vp44 bypasses the pressure.. make sure your intake air grid heater is working, check that with a 400 amp clamp on dc current meter, if it is real cold (below 0 deg F) I always say cycle the grid heater 2x with no crank between cycles. same on all diesels with glow plug! I cheat on all the diesels in the fleet and put on onboard battery chargers as well as battery blanket heaters for the guys who have to go when it is super cold (below 0 degF) if you use that with the block heater it is a total win day!! and be sure to drain the water often from the separator (every fill up) and use a good fuel conditioner to help in lower temps (below 35 deg f) some days you might be able to get it started... then cake up the fuel filter with wax if it is super cold (bad day)

My 99 has a long crank then it starts if I let it sit for a couple minutes what can it be?
@thoroughbreddiesel
@thoroughbreddiesel 4 года назад
Could be a leakdown or it’s a hard start caused be over pressurizing the pump. When you know its gonna hard start, kill the power to the lift pump and see if it starts. If it does, you have an over pressurization problem.

If your truck does not have a crank position sensor, then I would suspect the cam position sensor. If it’s a 98 or 99 truck with a crank sensor, I would do the crank sensor first.

Would cps cause shifting issues on automatic trans?
@thoroughbreddiesel
@thoroughbreddiesel 2 года назад
I wouldn’t suspect the CPS itself, but if you have zero tach signal then it could cause issues because of the drive ability effect on the engine. But if tach is there and you are having shifting problems, then something else is going on.
