Thank you! So should the WSL no longer go to Brazil or is the party worth it if they include more flexibility with access to the other end of the beach?

@@OldSurfDad ... Oh Dave they kinda have to still go right ? ... Of course we all wanna see the pros surf in the best waves but yeah .. I'm not convinced the WSL has that as the main priority... Can't please everyone I guess 🙏🌊

It was a subdued JBay event compared to past years but the surfing was great, given difficult conditions. Friday 21st morning was gnarly 6ft+ and doubling up and even when the wind straightened very few waves ran from Boneyards to Impossibles. Saturday was clean but smaller and slower. Steph rode a rounded pin thruster in earlier rounds and then that tweaked out twin-fin with asymmetrical tail (longer rail on inside edge for JBay), with short, tucked under, asymmetrical secondary rails next to the fins. Sally impressed with technical drop-wallet smacks and Coco was a pleasure to watch on those walls. Frederico found the best tube of the comp, Kerrzy rips and MFeb provided my favourite two stills this year. Regarding Rio, I agree with Tbone that Saquarema, with those banks, should never make it onto the tour over JBay. However, Brazil needs a CT event befitting it's influence upon world surfing.

Does Brazil need an event in their country though when they could get world class waves and Brazilian surfers could make a bigger statement by performing in those waves? Just thinking out loud..

@@OldSurfDad Good point. Perhaps this could be a theme for questions to competitors, ala your Punta Roca coverage? It'd be fascinating to hear Brazilian opinions on this. Are there better wave options elsewhere in Brazil? Would they trade better surf in Brazil or elsewhere but minus the huge crowd + support? Something tells me that mediocre surf is part of the Brazilian recipe for success, whatever our sensibilities may be regarding surf quality. Italo riding a standing wave chop in the middle of a chunderous, seaward rip perhaps sums up what Potts would have called competitive "mongrel". One thing's for sure - can't wait to see the Brazilian southpaws at Cloudbreak!

@@ohmyfynbos6070 I like that idea for a question a lot although it might be an 'off the record' conversation because they may be hesitant to answer with public scrutiny and WSL implications. Huge crowd and support is a factor and they must thrive on that, but I think those that come from crap waves do really well in great waves. Kelly comes to mind. Most of the tour surfed beachy to get to the CT and grew up in average surf. That's where the "mongrel" starts (love that you brought that up). They all have some level of skill there, but as a selfish fan that wants to see them surfing waves that are beyond the average punter's level, I can't wait to see Cloudbreak, the Brazilian Storm all of it. Stoked.

Loved the Lows - agreed! I posted a harsh comment on one of the wsl post show yt pots about mitch getting snarky towards Stryder after Strider gave his opinion about a surfers technique...I was just amazed that Mitch presumes to have a better insight and to loudly vocalize his ignorance, versus a vet like Strider

Mitch is a knowledgeable commentator, but he needs to reel it in sometimes and have a bit more respect. Strider has been at the pulse of surfing his entire life and his over 40 years of experience can't be overstated. Real life understanding of surfing? Mitch = a small beach break, Strider = Pipeline.

Jordy is the oldest surfer on tour (now that Kelly is gone) and his rise in the rankings caught me by surprise. I like it. Would not surprise me to see him at Trestles where he's won before. Good luck in Surfival!

I actually saw him and Caitlin Simmers with Red bull or Oneill team in Denpensar airport last year. I shouldve told him a huge fan. Hes a big guy in person and his power should help if Fiji offers ending carve section.

I've seen worst waves in Australia and other locations. I've heard it didn't have the best swell direction. Also agree that maybe Cole could have got the score, but still, the same and worse happens in Australian CT competitions, so it's all good. I'm from Brazil 🇧🇷 and I follow your show since last year. 👏👏👏

Thanks for this comment and being part of the show. Look, I'm not putting down Brazil's waves and especially not putting down Brazil. I love the place, made a lot of friends, people helped me out and got lucky and had a lot of swell when I travelled there. I just think there are better waves where they could hold the event. For example, it would probably be better for Brazilian surfers and all the surfers to have an event in Indo and the fact that the best surfers didn't go to J-Bay this year makes the world tour less meaningful.

@@OldSurfDad I partly agree, we then exchange Bell's or Margareth River event for one event in Indo. This event had good waves in general, and not talking about you in special, but the American and Australians surf media was a bit hurt for having a full Brazilian final, and end up focusing on an allegedly not too good waves.

Regardless of what happens next event, John is guaranteed ti go as the number one seed in Tressels...according to calculations...impossible for anyone to overtake him even he gets taken out in the elimination round. Give him the trophy already

With the drastic rise of shark attacks especially here in Hawaii; I’m curious why repellent products like sharkbanz isn’t more widely utilized. Any ideas? 🤙

Has anyone else noticed that there are surfers POST-Mid year cut- with almost zero sponsor stickers on their boards. Makes me wonder what the sponsor situation is like on tour. The top 15 - 25 athletes in any other sport are multi millionaires no dpubt.

True! Brisa has no big sponsor and Ramzi as well. Both of them are having good seasons. Did you notice any others?

Great observation. I really wonder what the average CT surfer makes. Watching Stab's "How surfers get paid" shows how rough it is out there. The main surf companies are now owned by two corporations (monopolies basically) and have no need to negotiate leaving the surfers with less money. If it wasn't for sugar caffeine water sponsors would there be a world tour?

Yeh, they didn't kill it, but they didn't do anything stupid either. I forgot to mention that I thought Jordy got heavily underscored on that right hander with the double grab against Yago, but Yago did get the better waves.
