Former world traveling surf photographer makes WSL fantasy picks and talks about surfing and travel. website for more details: www.oldsurfdad.com/ Thanks for watching!
I am gearing up for a 3:00 surf event. I am in sunny Southern California but the way the time zone is I get to watch it on my tablet while I’m “working”. Bummed about USA mens was hoping for the John John show but happy for the sport. Also we got some of our women poised to get it done. The location is fire just like we hoped it would be. Enjoy some great suffering on a Wednesday afternoon. This doesn’t happen for me very often. Listening to the Dave going through his low lites the camera man keep showing the underwater shoot and the Replay not clearly labeled. I thought it was just a me thing. I don’t follow suffering as much as I do follow Olympic surfing I don’t miss a heat. WSL I only watch highlights so watching from horn to horn is a new thing for me. I also noticed the no follow up interviews I think that would be a nice thing to add in but no commercials on the app has been worth it. I will take no interviews over commercials every 5 minutes any day of the year. Anyway I will check back tomorrow and hear about this upcoming event. Let’s go
@@OldSurfDad what a let down. I was ready to watch and then it just disappeared from the app. I am hope-full today-is the day. Lets get it girls especially my USA team
I agree. We probably could have focused more on the women's heats. We didn't have an outline and were winging it and still mesmerized by the day that just went down. Just remember though the men had surfed an extra round and there was more competition to talk about with the Men's. Thanks for watching!
I am coming here after never watching surfing in my life. I watched the first two rounds and got hooked. Then I turned on that round 3 for my family to watch for the first time. 10 minutes in we were all screaming at the TV! Incredibly thankful to NBC for the coverage. I think I'm hooked for life...
This made my day. Welcome to the surf world! Glad you enjoyed it. I will say though that what you saw yesterday was pretty special! Like maybe watching the Chicago Bulls if you never saw basketball before! Lol. But that's what so great about surfing. The ocean changes and the conditions are not always optimal which makes it fantastic on the days when everything comes together. After the Olympics we have Fiji on the Pro tour and that's a pretty darn good wave as well. Thanks for reaching out and enjoy the rest of the Olympics with us!
Time to get a board mate or even a bodyboard or anything flat, start in small waves and start smiling for the rest of your life, only a surfer knows the feeling.
“Not sponsored by anyone.” 😭 that will change. Hope WSL will start running events like Olympics! No extra drama, fluff or annoyance just 100% surfing with good commentary. Like the pauses during commentary to just watch the surfing in peace.
Exactly. "Dear Joe, We love the sound of the Ocean (more than your voice) leave empty spaces and let the event breathe" signed, all of us. hahaha Oh, and someone call the WSL and tell them to pay Mike Parsons whatever he wants.
I wanna know who the hodad/kook was calling the leash a board rope? She could not even pronounce names properly and the stoked bloke wasn’t correcting her either! So a few of us wrote on the NBC RU-vid account about it and yesterday they had perfect announcer and not mention of a leash or board rope 🤣🤣😂yeah the surfing was off the chart yesterday for sure and days 1 and 2 were great waves but the scoring seems to be “weird” should have real surfers announcing and scoring IMHO 😂
It was strange that in the US, the commentators from Days 1 and 2 completely disappeared and were replaced by a Joe Turpel with a muzzle and Mike Parsons. It was quiet enjoyable though. I must say.
EMBARRASSING the surfers in the olympics and the RANDOM draw..... NO italo F...? defending olympic champion and the last winner of the tahiti comp...... ?????? lots of NO NAMES that could be replaced by guys that could win the comp like kelly slater, julian wilson, jeromy flores, owen wright, etc.....
This is a rare moment when Surfline gets it wrong and it is actually a good thing! haha. Their wind models were way off and I feel like they should have at least updated the forecast during the event somehow. Anyway, I'm glad we got good winds for much of the day.
Probably. He was out of sync with the Ocean and there wasn't a lot to work with. Shows how small errors get bigger when the ocean takes a break. So many sets in the prior heat and I wanted so much more out of the JJF v Jack matchup!
Brazilians on fire 🔥 two athletes in the quarterfinals 🇧🇷💪 Medina king of Teahupo’o 🤴🇧🇷 Peru in the quarterfinals I even know about big waves in Peru ,the pipeline boy out haha
This thing ain't over yet my friend. I picked Medina to win Gold, but strange things happen and there's some solid competition still to come. Let's see.
Hi, that's so odd here in the UK watching live through discovery plus has been great! but the surfing is back to back no ads or breaks, from my perspective watching its made it seem like each heat is back to back so odd hearing how different it is to you guys
In regards to Felipe there's only two places on tour you don't expect him to win. But and I stress but if someone's only good at those two spots they'll never see a world title where as Felipe has a few more in his future and the straight fact of the matter is even the pro's like Kelly, Mick and on and on all say he's the best there is period in high performance surf! And it's a high performance tour he won sunset in sizable surf so like pottz said a few years back and Mick And Kelly said the same and that is Felipe if he chooses has all the tools in tool box to be a really good big wave surfer. And if he did do that everyone else could kiss any chance of a world title good bye for the next 10yrs so be careful what you wish for!! Hahaha
My point was that Filipe doesn't put in the time at shallow reef breaks and he needs that in his arsenal. Plus, it's pretty rich to claim head high waves in Round 2 and then disappeared in Round 3. His ego is not his amigo. I agree his high performance surfing is exceptional. Yes, Fil won Sunset (and you would want to add Margaret River to the list), but It's SHALLOW reefs where he struggles. Toledo has blown our minds, no doubt. But here in 2024 surfers are no longer either 'big wave surfers' 'reef surfers' or 'high performance surfers', they are developing the skills to be all of them. I would mention John John and Griffin and even Jake Marshal, but I don't want to make it a nation vs. nation thing. So i'll bring up Yago and Italo and Gabriel. All well rounded. All can surf any wave on the tour. Winning Teahupoo, Pipe (and now Fiji) won't necessarily get you a title, but it will get you a bit more respect.
Having Barton commentate the Olympics reminds me of how much I miss him. He can articulate details for a wide audience from a Pro's perspective with the stoke of a grommet. He's fun to hang out with. Why is he not with the WSL? I can only speculate, but I have heard it started with his anti-vaccine stance during Covid. That may or may not be true, but the bigger issue is that Barton is honest about how he feels. He calls it like he sees it and during a time when the WSL was tighter than a pent up accountant with questionable leadership bringing new changes to the league, Barton wasn't afraid to share his opinion about the bullshit of it all. Mostly, he was right, but the WSL stopped hiring him and we all lost. As the WSL seems to be unpuckering recently perhaps he may be back in the future even as he continues to criticize them. I sure hope so.
Yeh, the way the seeding (which was predetermined) worked out just seemed at odds with how proper ranking would have created the heats. I say this in the spirit of good surfing and not as a supporter of USA or any other country. Sure, I'm not stoked that John John is out, but did it help surfing to have he and Jack surf in the round of 16? Nope. The ISA surfers that win (in potentially smaller less gnarly breaks) are perhaps ranked higher than they should be based on the degree of difficulty of Teahupoo.
Meditation is equal no hit or miss..... the Brazilian penguin big miss.....leg workout is hard to do.... italo backflip... hes fired up bro!!!!!!!! Big hit
Luckily the forecast has changed also they are going to have a break in the contest. I think you should do a update of what we know now a day out. This wave is iconic and has the chance to bring a whole lot of new fans. Not that we need more people out in the lineup, especially at my favorite break in La Jolia. I ended up on this show by looking for some folks talking about practice so I ended up here by fluke. I enjoyed it enough to give you a like and subscribe I hope you keep us updated not that you are the only channel
Thanks for being part of the channel. I do updates on my website at oldsurfdad.com. There’s an Olympic page that has the surf forecast and latest updates. Cheers
Great preview! Looking fwd to all your coverage. Sailing & any sport on open water I would think will have extreme variables, just like surfing. Both during practice and competition......🌊🌊🌊 Go Team NZ!!
Just now came across this. Great footage of Rincon. I was out that day. My elbow still hurts from duck diving and holding onto my board for dear life. Got the best biggest waves ever that day.
For the Olympics in Tahiti I'm doing a Picks contest. You enter by commenting on my preview video here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-px1HGhXCUo0.html with your Medal winners in both mens and womens. Winner gets prize package from Carve.surf. For Fiji WSL fantasy will continue as usual. It will be the last event of the season before the finals. Thanks for your kind words and stoked you could join us for the show.
Olympic park in Sydney Australia seems well used 24 years later. They just built the new urbn surf facility there too. Suppose it depends on the country.
These people dont know what surfing is... They probably surf gulf ankle high. Also Montauk hurricane, the rock bottom reef gets barrels not CT but better than some other qs events. I'm from long Island and also long Beach got the man made jetties to keep most of the sand bars in
So are you saying the surf is good in Montauk? I grew up in Florida and equate it with east coast surf. Good at times flat a lot and magic during a hurricane or Noreaster.
