Hi Kevin, nice piece of property you have there, love the stream and woodland, the stock is coming on nicely with the oil sanding, yea I have often looked at old guns in gun stores and wondered about who made them and owned them over the years, the quality of the craftsmanship in old guns is unbelievable all handmade and hand finished, not like nowadays where everything is mass-produced and plastic. I visited London a few years ago and I visited the Beretta gallery, they have examples of all of their guns, some of there high end SO series over under shotguns are unbelievable, totally hand made, hand fitted and hand engraved....... with a price tag to match...😂 great video as always 👍
Wow kevin, if i had a brook trout creek in my back yard i would never go to work, lol.nice job on the stock. When i was a kid we did the same thing to my dads model 70 243 featherweight.used fine steel wool and linseed oil. Cheers man
Incredible work on the stock Kevin, its great to see the finish your getting. Thats a lovely piece of land you have. Thank you for this video. Take care.
Beautiful property you have! A storm is the reason I'm watching at 1am.. I'm loving the work your putting into that stock. It's a beautiful peace of wood, excellent work 👍
Great work on the stock finishing - wonderful land too. The 95 will be a testament to the time and effort you're putting in to it. Keep up the great work Kev.
Excellent video as always Kevin. Good job and it shows the beauty of the grain in the wood. I admire your skills and high standards on your workmanship. PS: Don't know why but "oil on, oil off" Daniel San! popped in to my head. 😂
Some great tips for all of us there Kevin, thanks for taking the time to put that out. And you are truly blessed to have that peice of the world to call your own, gorgeous setting.
Ehh.. i restored a 73yr old Mossberg 22 with True Oil that was in really bad shape and hot blued the barrel. No one could believe how nice the finished product turned out, but the amount of work involved was tremendous. If i had it to do over again I would use polyurethane, about 6 - 9 coats.
Kia ora Kevin...another awesome video, thank you for your efforts🥰 If could recommend one thing for a hardwood finish, its sanding sealer! As a wood turner that turns alot of native hardwood, I find that using a good quality sanding sealer during the original sanding stage will 100% remove all dimples & blemishes and leaves a perfect glossy surface ready for oiling or sealing 😁(I also like to use "earls wood hardner" before staining or oiling...it removes all moisture, rot, mould etc and leaves you with a rock hard surface that still draws in stains & oil - perfect for after the wet sanding stage 😉) Kia Kaha Kevin ❤
Sanding sealer is shellac, (Won't allow subsequent oil to penetrate) ! 😕 Normally Great Stuff, just not in this particular application... 🤷🏼♂️ Permalyn sealer Will work as it's specifically formulated for oil to permeate. 😉👍
@@marcmyers1465 Sorry Marc, I should have clearly stated - Modern Acrylic Sanding Sealer! As most modern sanding sealer is no longer made with shellac...mostly due to the rapid deplition of Shellac in India (Primary producer) Commerial Sanding sealer is a whole different beast now, and its specifically made to ensure pentration and allow staining, primary focus is to ensure the pores are sealed and smooth finish...I use it daily in my wood turing ;) (Never had issues with oil or stain, its amazing!!)
@@willytheekidI tried the Moser's Acrylic grain filler multiple times when it 1st. came out. Glass like finish when sanded, but once oiled all of the filled areas were completely impenetrable, and all of the oiled grain just produced dramatically darker tones and the whole stock honestly looked like a leopard pelt... 😖 Just a great smooth leveling but completely maddening ! 🤦🏼♂️🤦🏼♂️🤦🏼♂️ I promptly went back to the Permalyn but removing the Moser's acrylic was d@mn near impossible without re-dimensioning the entire stock. Almost a complete loss, but I eventually raised the grain, re-leveled with the Moser's and "Sprayed" the stock with Chroma-Clear. Obviously a Show Piece finish but Fragile as glass ! 😠 Honestly I've got an entire locker filled with jars of Shellac. Never noticed any shortage or scarcity... 🤔
@@marcmyers1465 Oh bugger!...that sounds bloody horrible!! 😮 Ohhhh I hear ya, Ive had similar experiances with grain filler...it certainly seals the wood! lol (It is damn near impossible to remove once on) I now just use the mentioned spray on Acrylic Sanding sealer and the wood hardner, light coats with sanding between and it still allows staining and oiling after - (Folk Art sanding sealer by PLAID) Give that stuff a try - Honestly, its amazing!!, I do wood & resin turning and play with LOTS of stains, resin and oils and never had a problem with this particular product 😊 But then again, Ive never done a gun stock before!🤔...Im just a wood turner and honestly, my absolute FAV finish...is CA glue mixed with boiled linseed oil 😂(I also make wood & resin shot glasses...a paper towel, some food safe CA glue mixed with boiled linseed oil = food safe, life long sealing & glass like beautiful!) But if I could recommend just ONE product to try...its earls wood hardner!...omg!!! does that stuff turn wood into stone!, I overnight soaked a piece and left it for a month to dry/cure...it was like trying to finish a rock!! 😳(I now use it before the final sealing & finishing stage for my larger turnings...my bowls etc are hard as stone!!) ps...ya might want to hang onto that Shellac! (Apparently climate change has buggered up the wee bugs in india that produce the stuff...its REALLY getting bad for the producers, most have shut down or soon will be!😔) Kia kaha Marc
I've finished so many stocks at this point that I can actually smell the oil, and my hands get clammy just watching this ! 😆 Not sure if this equates to smelling Mom's cooking or some kind of PTSD Ick reflex... 😵 I usually resort to ZEP orange abrasive hand cleaner followed by the Zep foam cleaner... 😝
You Sir, are a great teacher ,you can not rush perfection, sat back with a coffee, and really enjoyed this video .Have you ever thought of doing some gold panning in your stream? Cheers m8
You can certainly leave it as a high gloss if you prefer. In the next episode, I'll show how to knock that high gloss back to a beautiful sarin finish. Thanks for watching, my friend.
@razor1962 Kevin, Thank you, for that answer. I also see videos on the HW99, what is that equivalent too? I thought I knew all my HW guns, guess I don't! ScottPA
