Void City Customization
Episode 003
"Death of Superman" - Part 1 of 2
In this episode, Dan goes into detail on how he constructed a custom McFarlane Toys DC Multiverse "Death of Superman" Doomsday action figure. This is another somewhat of a kitbash, with a lot more custom paint this time, as well as some custom carved/fabricated pieces to build upon and enhance the existing sculpt. I go over the construction of this figure from head to toe, including photos I took to document the process, as well as a list of all of the parts you will need at home if you decide to try your hand at making one! In Part 2, I will return to go over the Superman figure that goes along with this Doomsday. Both figures are based primarily off of their respective appearances in 1993's "Superman," issue #75 (vol. 2), the issue in which Doomsday killed Superman, with art by Dan Jurgens.

Bro you did such a great job on this. I'm going to add the boots as well to give my Devastator the height he deserved. Thank you for the idea and inspiration.

Thank you very much. I honestly haven't seen anyone else do this particular "hack" yet. Omega for a time has been one of the easier ones to find around my area, every once in awhile I still see one on the shelf so you might have some luck if you travel around to several Targets in your area. Some even have him marked down at this point.

Great looking custom Doomsday. This is exactly how I picture this character. Not sure why Mcfarlane couldn't have done the same thing that you did 🤣👍

Thank you very much. I am sure that Todd will repurpose devastator once again in the future possibly with a different head and hopefully with different feet, for just this reason. I'm still surprised he didn't do it in the first two pack but that's Todd for you! 😂🤷🏼‍♂️

Thanks for the extremely detailed and thorough explanations. I hate it when customizers omit certain specifics. Great job. Subbed.

And thank you for the compliment and sub. I know what you mean, too. I think sometimes, if they've done something they haven't seen anyone else do, it's tempting to keep the secret... Like I almost did with Doomsday's boots here. I made this figure a long time before I shot the video for it, but I had posted some photos online, but I was literally the only person doing the boots at the time. then I put the tutorial up and suddenly they are everywhere. But at the same time it's cool to see that too. I'll keep it up! Stick around, the week after next, starts a four-part series, directly related to the story this figure is from... 😉

Yea, I actually lucked out on Amazon this morning and snagged the two pack for $30! So I’ll be attempting this same figure. Question, I noticed generally the baf don’t always fit as good as a normal figure because of different manufacturing batches and processing. But I know there’s that 5 pack for the Last Knight on Earth, any idea if that Bane is a bit better then one pieced together from individual figures? I would think so? 🤔
@VoidCityReviews
@VoidCityReviews 2 года назад
@@thepkeezy none of the articulation problems or I guess challenges would be a better word, that the Bane figure had will be solved by the five pack, however I do believe that being that it is all assembled as a single figure all at once, the figure should at least fit together better and work a little bit better than the ones pieced together as a BAF. I have the original version, and with some patience and a little bit of hot water, mine fits together just fine.
@VoidCityReviews
@VoidCityReviews 2 года назад
Unfortunately with Bane, not even being made all at the same time would entirely solve what one of the main issues is, which is unfortunately for McFarlane Toys, a bad design choice in the way Bane's thighs connect together. The fact that the peg is about as wide as a quarter, but only like 5 mm tall, it just doesn't allow it to plug in far enough to get a good grip. They could have solved it simply by just making the peg about three times as long as it is.

Thanks for the tutorial man! I've ordered the extra batcycle and omega for this. Looking forward to that Nightwing motorbike vid too
@VoidCityReviews
@VoidCityReviews 2 года назад
The Nightwing motorbike video is still a little bit on the back burner. I have to get a couple more attachments for my Dremel before I continue in on that one. I also have to find one small metal rod piece to replace a plastic one that I broke when I was taking the bike apart. I've also got a few other actual figures I'm going to show videos for in the meantime beforehand. But it's definitely still coming, and thank you for watching!
@VoidCityReviews
@VoidCityReviews 2 года назад
Just be patient when taking the motorcycle apart. I soaked mine in the almost boiling water several times throughout to loosen the glue. Be extra careful with the fork in the front wheel, it's just two little plastic rods, and they break very easily (it's the part I have to fix on mine).

@@VoidCityReviews Really appreciate the advice, I'm not touching the bike just yet but will definitely keep that in mind. Right now I'm working on Doomsday, trying to use Omega's neck with a bit of apoxie sculpt to add a little extra height. It is quite a fun experience.

Impressive amount of work went into this ! Great Job ! (I dont do many customs because of the need to get doubles of figures to sacrifice for parts, which means spending even more than I already do on regular figures to keep as is) I can see you do have a regular Devastator aside of the one you got and used parts of, But did you get a second Death Batcycle to keep as is ? Or did you dice up your only copy ? (Just curious)
@VoidCityReviews
@VoidCityReviews Год назад
I actually have four devastators. I have two more set aside for some future projects haha. So I've got the one regular one for the shelf, the two pack version for the shelf, and then the one I turned into doomsday, so actually I guess that means I have five total. As for the bike, I have two. I have the one on the shelf as is, because it's awesome. And then I have the pieces from the one that I took the skeleton off of leftover because I'm going to put it back together because there's a perfectly fine regular Harley motorcycle underneath that skeleton. Fully sculpted at everything, all it's missing is a front headlight which I can easily take off another motorcycle toy elsewhere. put that thing back together someday, paint it up, and it's a perfect motorcycle for like Nightwing or something like that. a lot of times if I know a figure is going to be good for custom fodder, I will buy several of them right when they first come out to avoid having to pay more for them later on. Same goes for if I see some on clearance, I will buy them all up just to have the parts.

@@VoidCityReviews Cool, I imagined you'd have a lot of extra figures specifically for customs and keeping some figures as they came, Great work, good luck on doing something with the Batcycle parts, that could be fun.
@VoidCityReviews
@VoidCityReviews Год назад
@@MK7-MephistoKevin777 oh yeah, I have one of every single figure untouched and unaltered for display purposes. If I do any customizing or need their parts, I buy extra ones on top of that. But I always keep at least one of them untouched to show the original factory way it came out.

@@VoidCityReviews That's a good way to do things, keeping one store bought figure (as it was) for the purpose of having an original copy (it's a part of history, like an actual comic book) And you get to compare and show ''Before and After'' but yeah you gotta buy a lot of extra figures to sacrifice parts to make these things, Great work, and I gotta see more of your videos !!!

I hear you. The more they bring him back, the less of a fan of him I am as well. I think he worked for the original purpose he was made for and I think they should have stopped with him there. Maybe one additional story would have been okay given that we saw he was still alive after Cyborg Superman threw him into space, but after that I think the more they bring him back the less impressive he is and he loses his impact. But I'll always be a fan of the original Death of Superman Doomsday.

Awesome video! You did an amazing job transforming this 2 pack. I gotta ask though, what figure is that you have in the back? Looks familiar but can't picture where I've seen it before. Looks like a big Crocodile standing on two feet (for lack of a better description xD) Can be seen at 19:54 in the case at the back to the right of your wooden box/glue etc. Thanks!

Thank you very much! Actually that is not a crocodile at all. That is a Spawn action figure from 1996, a character called "The Mangler," he is essentially a wolf given the power of a Hellspawn. Basically a werewolf Spawn.

Do you know if the neck peg on the Rebirth Superman figure would be the same size as the Action Comics 1000 one? I have searched and searched on Ebay and Amazon for action figure ball joints and neck pegs to use but can't seem to find many out there. I do have an extra Rebirth Supes I bought to part out for the Eradicator figure I'm doing. So hopefully his neck peg is large enough for Doomsday. Thanks to you, I'm now collecting pieces and working towards making Eradicator, Steel (using the Lex Luthor power suit body as a base) and this version of Doomsday. I bought the Devastator vs Superman pack specifically to get that Superman. I hate the Devastator figure, so he's in the closet. Although I can't seem to locate anything to use for Doomsdays hair at the moment.. (without spending around $30) I'm looking forward to making this custom of him. ...even if it's without the hair. I've watched quite a few customizers videos, but I enjoy and seem to get more out of yours than any others. Great work, man! ***Sorry for the paragraph***
@VoidCityReviews
@VoidCityReviews Год назад
I don't mind paragraphs at all! I had respond in several depending on the time I have ha ha! So first things first, you should be ok with the Superman that came in the 2-pack. He's the same Superman as Action Comics 1000, just with the different angry head. I BELIEVE if I recall correctly that they both used the same neck peg. Otherwise, oddly, I can't think of another figure with one that long, he's about the only one really. Rebirth was shorter, his whole body, and his neck peg, when though he uses the same HEAD sculpt as AC1000. As for the hair for Doomsday, you could always use scraps from an old cape of someone you aren't using, and paint them white. That vinyl/fabric spray I use comes in white, so it could work. I know my method was kind of out there and required specific leftovers... Sorry about that!! I hope the rest goes well for you! Thank you so much for the compliments! I'm working on some new ones right now, so stay tuned, too!!! Let me know how it goes!!!
@toddbrewer5616

@Void City Reviews damn.. lol, that's what I didn't want to hear. I only have 1 of that figure from that set. I only got the set for THAT Superman since I missed out on the AC 1000 one, so I really don't want to tear him apart. Guess I'll have to figure something else out. I don't want to spend $40 - $50 just for a neck peg. I'll definitely keep you posted on my progress. I'm currently painting the body of Steel. I'm still waiting on parts to really start on Eradicator.

that dull coat works where you paint the joints ?
@VoidCityReviews
@VoidCityReviews 2 года назад
As of yet, I have not painted any of the joints themselves. once I have to go down that route however, I imagine I will probably sand down the joints ever so slightly just to remove whatever top layer is there in hopes that it will help prevent paint rub off. Even with the dull coat I am sure it would happen at some point, especially if you are posing the figure a lot. for me, a lot of them get posed and then go on a shelf and get displayed so I don't have to worry about rub off as much. I'm sure it would also depend on what type of joint, how tight it is, and what type of paint/sealer is being used.

@@beckyross3210 Becky, it was only just now that I totally realized why I pronounce it that way recently. If I pronounce it the way he does, or I guess the correct way, it always does McFarland, and then I always have to go back and correct his name all over the place. So that's why right there.
