music (spring steel) wire! great reminder of a technique i had forgotten! so glad i looked this up before i went to work. wire also more likely to deflect rather than go through some (unseen) obstructions (edge of a pipe or other line) -- for when i am taking a risk.

The probe he is using isn’t “music wire”. You can get piano wire to probe through drywall but it wouldn’t work as shown here. Using insulation rods will work as shown.

Did you go below and do a rough check before you drilled the hole? Right off the bat I saw pex lines and mechanical s nearby.

Right? Like a quick measure from above and match it to below to ensure you aren't going through anything. He said he'd be more careful if there was sheetrock on the ceiling but he needs to be JUST as careful even without. It just means it gets repaired faster if he messes up.

You should not take the power from light box underneath it should be receptacle

I wouldn't call that a 'recessed' outlet for a couple reasons. Plate sticks out like dog's balls & you penetrated through the substrate, not into a substrate.

"I'll have the electrician come and wire it in to the existing outlet downstairs." THANK YOU. First video I've seen that has a TRADESMAN do this, which the directions for this box EXPLICITLY state needs to happen.
