Cutting heavy lead block with a log splitter - Bullet casting and reloading

Attempting to use a log splitter to shear a 45 lb chunk of lead. This is an old tired home made splitter, it really struggled but it did work. The key is to cut thin slices so it is easy for the lead to bend away from the wedge. This method works for cutting large chunks of lead into smaller ones that will fit into your casting pot. Be safe!

for lead, a thinner wedge might be more efficient, since you're more trying to cut the material than force apart fibers like with wood

Cutting lead isn't an easy or a clean task. Trying the log splitter was a good idea, and it would have worked well if my splitter was more powerful.

Recommend you use a smaller mold. Preferably before you destroy your wood splitter.

Have you tried a chop saw or a fiber blade in a grinder?

Is it possible to overstrain the splitter doing this? I have a feeling my father would be a bit concerned to see me attempting to sheer metal with his splitter, even if it is lead. Would be a lot nicer than using a damn Sawz-All.

i dought theres enough lead on the splitter to contaminate wood to a point of being a danger.

I have one concern with this. If any of that lead contaminates the next load of wood you split and then makes it to your wood stove you could have lead contaminates in the air in your home. I do not know what the % would be and all the math involved but it may be something you want to watch for and take measures against it.

On top of that, a fireplace doesn't get near hot enough to vaporizer the lead.
