Cutting the Hood × 4BT Cummins Discovery #50 [Land Rover Build]

Time to chop up the hood to clear all that Cummins 4BT turbo diesel engine swap goodness! This hood setup looks great... but it is temporary after all. It will get a proper exhaust + cowl type thing to cover the exposed bits eventually.

~ PART#50 in a project dubbed "Nanuuq" to swap out my lifted Land Rover Discovery 2's blown 4.0L V8 & boring ZF auto for a Cummins 4BT 3.9L turbo (Holset Super HX30W) diesel 4-cylinder engine (Bosch P7100 pump) with an NV4500 5-speed manual transmission. The AWD 4x4 will remain with the LT230 transfer case divorced behind it all, & plenty of Dodge 6BT parts too. Another big phase of my custom DIY build to create a do-just-about-anything off-road / overland rig. Did I mention it's a camper too?

It's a good kind of weird seeing a hood on it again after several years off... one step closer to driving without fear of weather/police! *NOTE:* _This hood setup is temporary, will get a proper exhaust + cowl type thing to cover the exposed bits eventually._

A grafted on puma defender bonnet bulge could be interesting? Lol I was waiting for the flippy top! Now to grab the hood scoop off a Subaru and fit it backwards to cover up the holes . And add a snorkel intake and an exhaust that won’t gas you with the windows closed.

What diesel engine would you consider for another Disco diesel swap? 4BTs are getting more expensive. How about ISB170 (common-rail 4BT), Isuzu 4BD1T or equivalent Nissan or Mitsubishi (SAE 3 bell housings)? I'm uncomfortable dropping $9,000 plus for R2.8, given the poor reputation of the ISF 2.8 overseas. How important is a 100% mechanical diesel to you?

@@Tinker1837 Problems I've had with my Mercedes om612 (2.7 CRD) engine in my Euro 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee (om612 is factory): o-rings leaking air in - causing no-start, OEM replacement starters intermittently grinding instead of engaging, "black death" injector seal leakage, variable-vane turbo actuator failure, power steering push-in connectors failing, intermittent codes being set - causing limp mode (2nd gear-only operation). It is smoother than a 4 and 163hp is plenty and it's quiet (can forget it's a diesel). Problems I've had with my Cummins 4BT in my 1983 FJ60 (a swap): mechanical lift pump failed, causing low boost, hard starting below 30F (no grid heater). A 4BT shakes, even with hydraulic mounts but torque is outstanding and hp is adequate. It is my back-up for my Jeep, which I have been driving (the Toyota) for months at a time because my mechanic entered retirement. So, I'm wondering if the Cummins ISB 170 (common-rail 4BT) will be as reliable with its computer usually mounted on the side of the block and with the fly-by-wire throttle. System uses Cummins Insight scanner that's proprietary. How do you trouble shoot without just "firing the parts cannon at it"?

I'm definitely too busy to do another, but I would say it's safe to assume about $5k if you do ALL the work yourself & keep it simple, but to do it like mine with all the upgrades it's near double. Engine prices have risen quite a bit too, which can complicate guessing swap cost.

earlier I asked you what you would do with the hood and you said you have a good idea. I don't like your idea at all. such low exhaust with diesel engine..... windshield always will be dirty and you cut off part of the amplifier of the hood just that the rubber hose does not rub against it..... I thought you'd build a better exhaust and intake system's

@@timwright848 It seems to me he could of flipped the manifold and positioned the turbo lower but sometimes the solution it isn’t that simple. Also Being a Florida boy I’m like “Ditch the heater grid”. That would gain him the needed space but I don’t think thats a option for him. Sometimes cutting the hood is a better option then try to change/redo things that are already fleshed out, done, and working.

Why do you take months to create an awsome car an then in the final moments deside to put the f-ing exhaust out the hood. With your skill it would not take much to make a good one under the car. Love the build by the way. It just grinds my gears when you americans just vents it out the hood.

Woah there, pump the brakes. Final moments? Hardly! It was a joke (same as the silly house light switches to start it) before building the full exhaust under the Disco. Don't make assumptions and you won't find yourself getting worked up over nothing 👍
