Thanks for the great info. Going to get a Javelina in AZ in a few weeks. I'll be packing my Optima in 50 cal. I use loose powder (because I live in Idaho and can't use pellets or copper bullets, or scopes), and a 245 grain hollow point Powerbelt. It should work well. Last year I missed one by a nose hair at 150 yards. I will not miss this year.

I use 2 Triple 7 Magnum pellets, that are 60gr each, with a Hornady 300gr SST in my Optima. Get great accuracy and good results on deer. The powerbelts I was using just didn't expand or dump energy in the deer, would almost always need a 2nd shot to finish them...

Been shooting 100gr IMR White Hots with a 240gr XTP hollow point in T/C Mag Express Sabots through my Wolf since 2011. Going to try some different bullets this year to see if I can get better terminal performance because I've had issues with the XTP not getting enough penetration if it hits bone.

I have owned two CVA rifles. I still own one. The first was a 35 Whelen in the Scout VII. It had case head separation on the second shot I fired and everyone thereafter. I took it to my gunsmith and the rifle had excessive head space. I sent it back to CVA and they agreed with my gunsmith. They did not however have another .35 Whelen so I ended with a .444 Marlin. I like the .444 very much but it is not what I bought. I am not sure I will ever do business with CVA again.

i have the CVA Wolf in 50 cal. My recepie is this: 2 pellets/100 gr of Jim Shockey Gold, Power -Bwlt 230 gr hollow point or the green tip. At 100+ yds dropped my buck in Kentucky. He only went 15 feet. That power-Belt hollow point is a stopper for sure. Love the Jim Shockey Gold Powder. Now I guess they don't make it any more. Living in Trempeauleau County Wis now and can't find it anywhere. So saving that for hunting and use 777 for plinking at range. LOVE THE CVA'S, and so much fun to shoot.

My Accura shoots the 300 grain Powerbelt Platinums well (1"). It also shoots the 338 grains well enough (1.5)" groups) but at 200 yards the groups get bigger (4"). The 300 grain Platinums stay under 2.5". I think a faster twist would keep the groups tighter at longer range with the heavier bullets. If the Accura 50 cal LRX came with a 1 in 24 twist ( love the free floatin barrel) I would buy one.

I use Hornady 250 gr. SST over 100 grains of Pyrodex pellets. Shoots 1 1/2 inch groups at 100 yards. I have taken 2 deer with this combo. One dropped on the spot, while the other ran about 75 yards. The only problem I had was on the deer that ran. The bullet did not pass through, and there was zero blood trail.

@luvbgrass
@luvbgrass 2 года назад
I shot power belts for a number of years. I liked the way they loaded, and they shot a good group out of my gun. After myself and my brothers shot a pretty good number of deer. We learned they suck at killing deer. And I'm talking about good shots on deer. We all had the same experience with them. Many times they didn't exit. Stuck in the hide on the opposite side. Flattened out almost big as a quarter. Not good blood trails a lot of times either. I usually don't down products. But in this case I don't want to see others go through what it took us years to determine. Just so you know. 50 cal, 90 grains 777 was what we usually shot.
@1v1fishing86
@1v1fishing86 2 года назад
What do you like to use for good blood trails on whitetail?
@luvbgrass
@luvbgrass 2 года назад
We have been using Hornady.45 hollow point 300 grain XTP Mag bullets and loading them in Harvester crush rib sabots. They do really good for us. That’s all one of my brothers has ever shot. And he’s killed a pile of deer. He never got into the grass is greener like a couple of us did. I went back to the XTPs. They worked for me years ago. If I hunted where I had longer shots I’d probably drop back to the 240 or 250 grain. I forgot which one they make. But my shots are almost always under 75 yards. I hunt the mountains pretty much always.

The box on the IMR Whitehots has a 50 Caliber Maximum Load Warning that says, “The maximum load should never exceed a total of two (2) IMR Preformed Charges. CAUTION: Some rifle manufacturers may recommend the use of a number of Preformed Charges in their rifles which exceeds the MAXIMUM LOAD WARNING from IMR. IMR specifically disclaims any and all liability arising out of the use of any data that exceeds our MAXIMUM LOAD WARNING and the user assumes all risks in doing so.”

I love my Accura V2 PR 50 cal and use 777 pellets 100 gr with PB 295 gr bullet. Is that ELR bullet good for deer at 100 yds or less?
@MuzzleLoaderscom
@MuzzleLoaderscom 2 года назад
The ELR bullet is a high ballistic coefficient bullet and is designed to be fired at high velocities. If you wanted to try the ELR in your muzzleloader I would recommend using a magnum charge of 150 grains of 777. With that load, you should be pretty accurate out to 300 yards.

I wonder how people justify the cost of this. Am I missing something? The reason I ask is because I would like to get into this, however, by the time you by the gun and the components, you can buy nearly any straight wall cartridge rifle and a couple hundred rounds of ammunition cheaper than an inline muzzleloader and it's components. The only acceptable powder out there for me would be Blackhorn 209 because I want to shoot, not spend my time swabbing the barrel. That is currently about $105 for 8oz., then add a $1.50 bullet and you are looking at around $3.50 a shot. That is extremely expensive with no advantage over something like a 450 Bushmaster straight wall cartridge. Is there a much cheaper place for components than I am finding?

It would seem like Overkill I think through a lot of guys because I'm using a 300 grain Platinum with 150 grains three pellets pellets I use now hodgon triple 7 I prefer 150 grains of powder over 100 because a lot of times wasn't getting a complete pass through exit hole John Deere and a lot of other hunters I've talked to using 100 grns didn't have passed through either not much of a blood trail without exit hole 100 grains will definitely do the job but I know for sure using 150 grns with heavy bullets its going to hit hard and blow through what im aiming at

I disagree with you on the bore butter. I use it but wipe it clean with a dry patch. Doing this at every cleaning it increases the ability to load 6-7 shots and still group 1 in at 100 yards before it gets hard to load from the fouling. If I do not use it 3 shots and your struggling to get bullet seated and the group opens up to between 2-3 inches at 100 yards. I know every gun like something different but bore butter works great on my CVA optima.

You can start with 50-grains in order to get the feel of it but I wouldn't be afraid of a 100-grain charge. The CVA Optima with a 100-grain charge (measured by volume) of standard black powder substitute is very manageable.

Get on any muzzleloader forum and talk to the guys who get the best accuracy possible out of their muzzloaders and they arent using pellets and powerbelts. This is just a sales pitch. Will these combos kill game??? sure but your not getting the best results possible. How long does it really take to measure powder and put in a premeasured container??? or better yet buy a 15 dollar scale and weight your powder. The pellets and powerbelts fad is just to sucker in people who just want to be told what to buy and to dumb it down as much as possible. But will only a slight bit more effort you can really increase your performance
