From personal experience I think over doing it on most rides is the biggest culprit. Pretty much every ride with others descends into tempo for the whole thing. Strava avg speed/comparing is another issue, external pressure to push when you probably shouldn’t.

Patrick we need more of this. Really interesting and great conversation between the pair of you. Top bombing mate

I'd totally watch a part 2. That was fun! I like his attitude and it certainly makes me take Join a lot more seriously. Best quote for me (as a 30+ year veteran of IT startups): The hardest thing is "the tension between product and marketing". Oh, that hits close to home. Ha ha ha ha! I love that he built the prototype as an Excel macro. I'll be honest, unless they have a ridiculous team, that will cost them a bit long term, but it gets you off the ground, which is the hardest thing to do. I'm sure the excel macro is long gone, but those initial crazy prototypes often have long shadows 🙂

Would be cool, if we could add our strength training and tell Join what leg exercises with what weights we did.

Unfortunately there indeed seems to be an issue with the ending on the video. The audio version has the final part included. Available on any pod player: shows.acast.com/lanterne-rouge-cycling-podcast/episodes/jim-ep

It's a big vote from me for the mixed Running/Cycling app. The variation adds so much to my training

Great interview. I liked both the sports science discussion and the business angle. Going to try some slow running to improve my cycling too. 😊

Find a gradual climb and ride with one foot unclipped. Right foot then left foot. Don't overdo it the first time. You will have sore muscles the next day. Those are the muscles you haven't been using to round out your pedaling. Once those muscles are fit riding is the pack is easy. Your big sprint muscles will be ready when you need them. When I was 50 I was still very competitive in 30+ crits in Austin Tx. In a 5 week series I placed 3rd overall. That was 24 years ago. I was a 5' 8" lightweight climber that had to train for mostly flat races.

This is either really silly or incredibly brilliant advice haha Just curious how long would you suggest riding with one leg? 1 min, 2min, 5min etc each?
@smeetsnoud1

@@endaohalloran6649 it's been proven in most athletic disciplines. It's been implemented after injuries for some time, but it also gives benefits when fresh (left/right same power output). It engages many more muscles, especially for core stabilizers. It wouldn't surprise me at all if it works on a bike as well.

@@endaohalloran6649 If you have a stationary trainer, try it on that. You might make it a minute, but be careful, you will have sore stomach and back muscles the next day. It's then that you will realize which muscles you weren't using to power the bike. When you get good you will be able to save the main power muscles for when you really need them.

I find this stuff interesting, but I’d rather not be on a structured plan. Of course I like to be fit, but for me the main reason to ride bikes is enjoyment and being too analytical or structured detracts from that

Very interesting about incorporating periods into training plans. No one else is doing this, its limited at professional sports level (which is nuts) and is absent at amateur level.
