Consider....D'angelo is a principally self taught musician in the same way of the late Great Prince....so he's playing the bass keys with his left hand..piano chords with his right hand and the vocals...at the same time. GENIUS.
For real. Singing. Bass lines with left hand on upper keyboard. And still killing it with the chords and Melodies with right hand. I only know one other person doing that in these current times among maybe a few: Cory Henry.
F*cking hell. Fan of both artists (SOS and D'Angelo) but came across this video by accident. And he just killed it. D'Angelo really should do a studio version of this and 'No one's Gonna Love You'. That would be amazing.
I have been obsessed with D'angelo ever since Brown Sugar came out...I have a pet theory that the coda/outro on "The Root" is him doing a kind of like chronological survey of black singing styles where he does Marvin and Al Green and SOS band and Dazz Band and Cameo...
Wait now. It's really not that hard to do. D'Angelo is supreme, no doubt, but it's not hard to play analog bass, keyboards, and sing. He isn't doing anything out of the norm,. He just sounds a hell of a lot better than the ones who can do it.
@@charlesislaw That is CRAZY TALENT!! Someone said he was playing the bass line with his left hand and I didnt believe it at first....but I watched....AMAZING!!
This is pure musianship. That man played the keys, sang the male and female verses, and the hook harmony. Questlove killed it too. It was 100% live...no filter. Amazing!
At LEAST once every couple of months - just to see if "it's still there." Amazing all that D'Angelo is doing with just (2) keyboards. Not to mention is rearrangement. Pure genius art here folks.
@@737mpeters Right On! R.I.P. - "Ndugu" he was nice & put in a lot of work. I been blessed to watch & listen to some incredible drummers Peart, Rich, Gadd, Bozzio, Cobham, White, Bonham, Weckl, Purdie, Garibaldi , etc... & love them all. I got to say this cat's precision is crazy in the pocket. WOW! It's not easy to say this by the small list of greats I mentioned, some drummers have better skills then the other. Yet "Yussef Dayes" meter & timing precision is unreal. I think he actually has better timing than my drum machine? HA Check this dude out perfect meter, YT link: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-NwVtIPeYIeQ.html
Wow! Surely you are joking.....right? That's an embarrassing statement right there! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-eYx-oI6Y03Q.htmlsi=In4cNwQVZ_FwGln5
Soak it all in ladies and gentlemen. In the current times that we're in, this is a phenomenon. Real musicianship by both artists (no drum machine and keyboard programming), real music (the original cut by the S.O.S. Band), and real singing by D'Angelo (no auto tune). These type of performances are few and far between in today's show business.
He sang both parts...I miss his style of music. Today's music is missing the ingenuity, the love, the willingness to allow or show what's on the inside. (80-95) music. Sorry no need to argue its just my opinion that's it.
You're not allowed to show any emotions or niceties these days because men that are soft to their women are now shamed as being a "simp" or a cringy "niceguy." Meanwhile at the same time women are encouraged to be extremely strong and independent against men. Those two factors combined you have a very combative women/men dynamic that has no space for emotions or anything sweet, really.
D'Angelo, I have read how you are extremely concerned about your weight and are at times self conscience about it. You are still handsome and talented. Do not let critics hurt your feelings. I have gained weight too from having to take medication for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder because of the neglect and abuse I suffered from my ex husband and fighting four years through homelessness alone. God is absolutely amazing! I guess what I would like to tell you is, there are so many beautiful qualities in a person set a side from how they look. Their mindset, spiritualism and loving the Lord, their character, loyalty, kindness and compassion, faithfulness, how they make you feel just snuggling, the words written in a song, or the mere tone of a cord that they played, something that they do that makes them different and special in their own way. There are so many wonderful attributes of people that are not based solely on how one looks and if appearance is all a person cares about, well, they are just absolutely wrong as well as fake. Getting to know a person's heart, soul, what makes them laugh or cry, what are their interests and this just vaguely scratches the surface of really knowing and loving someone for who they are... don't let that bother you and you keep your head up
I agree! His talent is MUCH bigger than his physical appearance. I was so perturbed when people were upset that he gained weight since his 2nd album. Plain foolishness!!!
Few months of the gym he’lol be straight..regardless of how he looks, baddest man to ever touch the keys and sing. He’s a hybrid soul singer. Dude can’t be touched or seen by anyone in the category or outside. The maxwells n Bilals etc...they are very talented. But Dude right here, is before and ahead of his time if that makes sense
@@atotallynormalperson3310 U guy's R funny, NO dis to Swing or D at all, but using the word "genius" is a tilted truth. Ya'll must not a heard of a "true genius" His name was "PRINCE" & he was Funky, His name was "PRINCE" the one & only! Hit it, Get down!!
@@216Numbskull no YOU are funny!!! Prince was the ultimate musical genius. And he idolized arguably the 2 greatest musical geniuses to ever live. Stevie Wonder and Joni Mitchell. He also adored D’Angelo and would jam with D and Ahmir because he recognized that D was indeed a genius like himself. I study musical geniuses. And respectful bro I probably have more knowledge of who is a musical genius and who is not in my pinky finger than you have in your whole body. Paul McCartney, Jimi Hendrix, Van Morrison, Shuggie Otis, Frank Zappa, John Lennon, Kurt Cobain, DJ Premier, and I can keep going but I won’t. A musical genius is an extremely rare thing. And I never get it confused. So trust me on this one bro D’Angelo is a certified musical genius . 👋🏾😎✌🏾🎹🎸
@@moehammondmedia You're trippin', yeah sure you study & know the who is who of musical geniuses, OK! From where the first Google search page you looked up? Please, stop it, you're embarrassing yourself? Don't quote me on this, but I don't even think D'Angelo jammed with Prince once, much less how you implied it here? Like Prince adored D'Angelo & "would" jam with D & Ahmir all the time. Cause that absolutely did not happen, they weren't tight at all, genius! GTFOH Blah,ha,ha!!!
Wish there was some footage of him working in the studio. I would pay just to see him being creative and producing all this beautiful music. His talent is almost heavenly.
0:21-0:28 will always blow my mind away, just how D’Angelo cues up that classic and Quest picks it up & sets up the vibe for him he even smirks at the end like “can’t believe you just pulled that one out but I got you my G” 😌🙏🏼✌🏼
@blacknight39 Warren's claim was that CREATIVELY he is of the same caliber as Prince. Which I completely agree with. I would even take it one step further and argue that D'Angelo is creatively superior. Prince is a legend no doubt but D'Angelo's understanding and implementation of musically transformative artists like Funkadelic, Sly, Curtis Mayfield, Eric Clapton, J Dilla, just to name a few, have shaped D's unique style of psychedelic rock/soul/r&b/gospel/hiphop/funk. His body of work compares with legends of the past in quality, while simultaneously pushing boundaries and continuing to innovate sonically in a growing technologically dominated music industry. D'Angelo > Prince in my opinion.
questlove is the most Soulful funkaaaaaaay drummer on earth and is the very first reason I started playing In the first place... dangelo ... well yes amazing as always :) GOATS both of em !!
The whole Voodoo album has Questlove on drums. The tour around that time too, as DAngelo & the Soultronics. Best show i've ever seen. Check the vids here on YT.
We LOVE YOU D'Angelo! You are one of our few most influential performers. Questlove rocking it out with you! Thank You both and please keep doing what you love and allowing us to love you right back!
