D&D story: I said D&D is not the best game for telling stories in a TTRPG con

But I meant what I said. D&D is not the best system to tell great stories. While it's certainly possible to live through great stories in D&D, the game is optimized to provide a good gaming experience, where the story is almost a side effect.

I hope one day my own system will be mentioned as one of the best for having a narrative focused experience. I think dice still can be useful even in narrative games, but I have to admit I had to rethink many a paradigm our hobby has until I found how to make that truly work.

Is your system already published?

@@TheFirstArcadianDnD Not yet, but I hope to get everything written down this year. Then I will start looking into my publishing options.

This is so damn true, i had to explain to people that DND is always (even in the ye olden days) is a combat simulator first snd foremost...And I like that! I can always do Roleplaying without the need of a game system, been doing that for years, not throwing shade for those that like pure RP system like Fate, PbtA, etc. But they dont really do anything for me, i like for my TTRPG to have the G as the main thing, as I can always RP without the G just fine. But yewh i agree that DND isnt the best narrative game, but cant lie, when the dice aligned so perfectly that it can be remem for years to come, it feels special. Ofc thays mainly cause of the DM tho

And ultimately, the cool thing with games like this is that we can always move the toggle more towards the RP or towards the G according to our preferences, we just need to be aware of the limitations of the system itself

D&D is definitely one of the most fun games for murdering a bunch of monsters, but there are barely any official rules or guides for how to make a compelling story, and the only tool that gives players actual control over the story, Inspiration, is something they can only be awarded by the DM. Compared to Fate, where you essentially get five points of Inspiration to use every session and only “level up” after completing a character goal, D&D has almost no tools to tell a story. Neither system is objectively better than the other, they just have entirely different goals. D&D is one of the most fun combat oriented RPGs I’ve ever played, and most of my players only seem to care about combat anyway.

And you can always try to "force" more RP and narrative into a D&D game, but that demands an amount of effort from the DM that other games might carry with their on their own. I never tried Fate, but I've been eharing about it for a while. Maybe it's time I gave it a shot...

Dude, I remember this 😂😂 Everyone definitely ganged up on you, and you were honestly right! D&D is a great system for improv because of the unpredictability of dice rolls, and improv is super fun! But it's not necessarily the best writing tool out there, and it's definitely not for everyone, which further complicates the cooperative nature of it. There are games out there that are specifically tailored towards story writing! Microscope, for example, is overtly a scene/setting/story builder.

You have a way to translate the blabberblather that comes out of my mouth in a way that makes sense... "D&D is a great system for improv but is not necesarrily the best writing tool out there". This! Right here! This is it! If I hired you as a script advisor, I'd be making 30 second videos and still get the point across XD I have very fond memories of our first trip to collective nerdland though, and even that discussion was kinda fun

i completely agree with you, it's something i've been saying a lot lately. I personally manage to make good stories in D&D too, but it's not the best system for that. i don't think that systems that let the players do the master work are actually a good way to tell a story, because if 5 people are writing the same story, it's hard to make it coherent. i think the best games to tell a story are games with no rules, or very very little rules, like elish (an italian, alost unknown rpg, that i personally illustrated). They force you to describe your actions in the best way possible, because the result depends mostly on your description. Events and fights are faster and much better described. If you want to balance game mechanics and rpg moments, i suggest you playing sine requie, vampires or call of chtulhu

I know. The best game to tell a story is Follow 😁 I don’t play or GM DnD neither. The focus on the combat is to one sided for me. Although I am blessed with players that look for drama and try to improve the narrative all the time.
@TheFirstArcadianDnD
@TheFirstArcadianDnD 11 месяцев назад
Never heard of Follow, but I'll be sure to check it out. Isn't it so awesome when the players take up the role of narrative shakers and kick up the drama on their own? My favorite moments at the table are always when the players start "playing" on their own and I just get to sit back and enjoy the drama XD

It can be. But it depends on the DM also.
@TheFirstArcadianDnD

Yes, I agree. In a way, it's an extra burden the DM needs to own if (like me, I should add) they want to go that extra mile

It can be. If you suck its just a combat simulator
@TheFirstArcadianDnD
@TheFirstArcadianDnD 11 месяцев назад
I think the biggest issue here is that the system itself doesn't support those who want to make it more than just a combat sim, so the responsibility to elevate the game's narrative falls exclusively on the DM. It's not like that's a horrible thing, but even the suckiest DM would be able to weave more narratively satisfying stories with a game that supports narrative, and even the best GM from a game who does support narrative would deliver more lackluster stories if they switched to D&D
