My dear wife died at 68, almost 5 years ago. She was my life. Soon thereafter, I adopted my dog. We immediately bonded. He is never more than a few feet from me at all times. A few months after my wife died, my oldest son and his family offered to sell their house and move in with me (I have a big house). A few months later they moved in with my (then) 3 and 5 year-old grandsons. It’s been like a 2nd chapter for me. I do all the cooking and shopping, put them on the school bus in the morning and meet the bus when they come home - with my dog Prince wagging his tail beside me. I’ve gotten active in a small church with my grandsons who are both ringing the bell, lighting the candles, and taking the offering. I am busy. Too busy to feel sorry for myself. I thank God for my blessings everyday. I am a lucky man.

People who are older are often depressed not because they never trusted people or never loved anyone. Actually it's quite the opposite. They were young, they had their families, they got married, had children, had many friends, had their careers. They did love and trust their partners, their children, and their friends but, life changed, people change, then, they got older. Husband or wife left or died, friends moved away or died, grown children left home and so on and now children don't want to be bothered with their aging parents. They just don't give a damn. Beleive me things don't stay the same and it can happen to anyone once you start getting older plus everything seems to get more difficult with age. You get sick, you have an accident, you lose your home, you need surgery. Don't be too fast to judge older people You're life can change in the blink of an eye. It's certainly not because they didn't love or trust. It's not that easy for older people to make new friends Older people are more sensitive, nervous and not as capable of handling the punches anymore. People don't have a lot of friends and if they think they do then, they should ask themselves who are the truly good friends that they can count on. Most of their friends are probably just aquaintances, neighbours, coworkers but who are the few true friends. There's a saying that" if you have 1 or 2 really truly good friends in life then, you are blessed or you are very fortunate. The thing to learn here is to have compassion towards your fellow human being no matter how different they are and what they're going through because one day that might be you and you wouldn't like to be judged that your lonely because you did something wrong. We all make mistakes and we all have our time to learn. Yes some people learn faster than others but that doesn't mean they're better. Remember, everyone is on their own journey here on planet earth so, lets judge less and have more compassion for eachother ❤✌️

Well said! My family is all gone and I’ve been naive and have been too trusting of people that were manipulative users with anterior motives because they wanted money or gossipy news. Many have been narcissistic, nasty people leaving me feeling like a walking zombie where I no longer trust anyone. I no longer really know if I want someone as a partner or not. In all honesty, I’m scared of getting older because I’m all alone. I’ve been lonely my whole life and many people are phonies. At best, I have acquaintances and nobody I would really say is a true friend. Your comment said exactly how I view the world and people in general. I’m good with names and faces. Many I see going about don’t even ask what my name is. My immediate family is long gone and I would like to join them wherever they are or in the emptiness of whatever happens when one passes. I have no children and not close to cousins. Too little, too late as I’m along in years. Who wants to really go out to dinner alone or on a trip somewhere alone? You look around and everyone is with their other or family. I’d like all these people to go through the holidays completely alone and not be invited over so you’re not alone and even when someone does think of including you it feels as though you’re violating another family and their time together.

@@OSTARAEB4 I get what you're going through as I'm going pretty much through the same thing. You're not alone many are going through this these days and it's worse than ever. Even the younger generations are complaining about this. The world seems to have gotten a lot colder in the past 3 years. I go out for walks and I go into shops, not always buying anything and sometimes I end up having a conversation with someone or I talk to some of the homeless and if I can spare change I will give it to them. You'd be surprised at how many are ok to talk with and no I don't go anywhere with them and I don't take anyone home. It's just to get out of the house a little and have some normal human contact. A pet is a good thing also if you're up to it and have the time. I just lost both my cats not too long ago and I thought I would die but thinking maybe I'll adopt another one in a couple of months. I won't adopt a kitten though, I don't have the energy anymore but there are some poor older animals sitting at the shelter waiting for someone to take them home to love them and take care of them. They're lonely to. Of course it's not everyone's cup of tea. Some people buy bird seeds, peanuts in the shell and go to a park or wherever to feed these animals. I live in the city downtown so there's more people around. It's a lot more lonelier if someone lives in a rural area. I love the country side but I wouldn't want to live there. OSTARAEB4 don't give up but be cautious and wise. ❤️✌️

Aside from my wife, I have never had a ‘best’ friend in my life and I am now 73. I have never considered the lack of close friends a handicap. I have zero expectations of any person I’ve ever met and have never approached them with the hope that they would be ‘my’ friend. Some people collect friends wherever they go. In the past I have wondered what that must be like, but now, with a lifetime lived without friends I occupy myself with activities and there seems to be no shortage of things to do.

I don't agree with the advice to get friends by showing interest in others' lives and their interests. I read that when I was a teenager. I'm now 73. The experience I had was that the relationships I built up using that advice eventually had me realizing that everything I experienced with those people was all about them. But finally it dawned on me that they knew nothing much about me and had never showed personal interest in me. So I'd continue on with the relationships but gradually begin subtly pulling away, testing to see if they would do anything to try to continue the relationship or just let it fade out, which is always what happened. So you may get relationships with others following that advice but I think in most cases they won't really be interested in you in return. I wish I were wrong. It sadly cost me a lot.

I've always been blessed with many friends throughout my lifetime. I come from a very large family as well. Thank God that I've always still considered myself a loner, or never relied on anyone, but I've always been there for all of them when they asked me to. I've been married, had my 2 kids, no grandkids. In the past few years I've lost many relatives, my ungrateful nephews and nieces don't bother to stay in contact, only when they need something. I've learned to get away from friendships that I realized were toxic and needy. My lifestyle has changed, but I've always kept myself busy enough to stay happy and never lonely. People to talk to are abundant, I'm friendly and talkative wherever I go without ever sharing too much. Whenever I read comments like these, I know I'm just like everyone else, I don't rely on others to make me happy. I'm close to God, that keeps me strong 🙏

No one understand and was good to me better than myself, my wife excepted., of course. As of my kids, they got their own life & family and don't care much about their aging parents. So be it. My preferred quote is the one saying you better be alone than having bad company. So true indeed. I always long for someone to listen to my stories/concerns as I do, rather than just focusing on themselves --- talking, talking, talking. Now I am at my 60s I could accept life quite well although things around not too good. Keep busy is really good. Always keep in touch with friends online, cost nothing. Meeting friends is a must once in awhile. Be generous with 'unknown' people around you or on the streets. I prefer to help people whom I dont know cos they would not come back easily 😊. Little acts can easily put a smile on them. If I were to help people I knew well some would rely and always come back to you. Not sure anybody here understand my point. Our job besides getting the customer’s drink correct is to make everyone feel welcome. Love or hate Starbucks their motto was “it’s not home it’s not work, it’s the third place” I like talking to people. Ask questions, everyone wants to talk about themselves and feel they are heard. Listen and make a short comment every now and then. Everyone wants to feel seen 😊

in a lot of ways this is better, in some respects it can be negative (depends on your family dysfunction or dynamics). anyway, I agree that close families help forge bonds and create happy times together, no one in my family talks or gets together and it is largely due to not having any spiritual awareness or choosing to honor God or wanting to live as God asks. that's my take. the best thing to have is a spiritually loving family, maybe I will get this "next time"
