In this video we show you an actual case that was sent in to us for data recovery. It is a great illustration of how severe the damage can be when a head failure occurs, and we explain why the data cannot be recovered in these situations.
Regardless of what you may have heard or read, when the magnetic coating on the platters (the area that actually holds the data) have been turned to dust, there's no way the data can be recovered. Imagine writing your name on a piece of wood and sanding it off, then try to imagine repairing the sanded area to restore your signature, it's physically impossible. The same thing occurs with hard drive platters.
Hard drives are extraordinarily complex devices. Any imperfections in the platter or read-write heads can cause the drive to fail. If a head failure is severe enough it can score the platter surface as illustrated in this video and render the data unrecoverable. You can read more about how hard drive operate here acsdata.com/how-hard-drives-w...
Some companies will tout that they have a 95% or better success rate when it comes to hard drive and RAID data recovery services. The truth is, they are either extremely lucky or they get very few jobs in. Most data recovery jobs are either recoverable or unrecoverable before we even receive them. In cases like this when the hard drive platters are severely damaged, then there's nothing we or anyone else can do. Has nothing to do with our capabilities when it comes to data recovery.
If we had 100 jobs come in every week, and 99 of them had scored platters, our success rate would only be 1%. That's not realistic, and not an indicator of capability.
On average, if you really ask the companies that know what they are doing, you will find that about 15-25% of the drives that arrive are not recoverable from the start due to either platter damage, data corruption, or failed prior attempts that have exacerbated the problem.
If you need data recovery on a failed hard drive or RAID array, just make sure you do your homework and verify that the company can actually recover data successfully. Most won't charge you any attempt fees unless they can recover your data.
At ACS Data Recovery we never charge an evaluation fee, and the only time we ever charge attempt fees are in cases where a drive has already been opened prior to our receipt, or in complex RAID arrays.

Any recommendations for long term data storage that cant/wont fail? I have had well taken care of HDD drives fail with in 3-5 years. I have also heard of SSD drives failing due to electrons passing through microchips. Don't know if optical disk drives are able to be sourced anymore?

I got 2 st1000dm003 1TB drives in my nas 24/7 in mirror and they seem to keep up fine under low temperatures. i got my dad a 2TB st2000dm001 and i know it is known to fail but i wanted to see myself how bad this drive is.

I have at work a ST2000DL001 (barracuda green i think) that had the same thing happen, it failed to a head crash which scraped every platter clean, there is dust all over the inside of the drive, nothing is getting that data back, even the filter is full of the "data dust". There wasnt anything important on it, it just does the typical seagate sound when a AF 2TB drive cant become ready. I'm gonna make a flyer for out front and set the drive out there saying"dont let this happen to you, ask about our managed plans and backup service".. I think it might be a good marketing idea.

how would one prevent dust from entering the hdd? or is that case because somebody opened it up

a lot of these failed prematurely. At work we had 2 of these 2TB barracuda 7200.14 die with tons of bad sectors. It was so bad the RAID degraded and caused the server to slow to a crawl.

Just about the ONLY drives I can buy locally are Seagate Barracuda 1 and 2TB models. I have just bought a 1TB drive for local storage (most my stuff is stored on a 5TB WD NAS), have I made a bad purchase choice?

i have the same model which did the same thing as yours customers & inside its exactly the same. disk was working fine & just died in the middle of me watching film from it. Te filter in it is soaking black. Disk itself covered in black particles. Otherwise disk was working without any complains right prior this disaster & was checked frequently by hd tute pro on any problems which wasnt found...

+Jay Walt We've had drives come in where the platters were shattered into a thousand pieces. Some older Western Digital 2.5" drives used a glass platter. Also seen some older Hitachi drives where the platter coating was wiped clean, and all that remained was a perfectly clear see-through disk.

If the HD has multiple platters and only the top one is damaged, can the others be recovered from?
@acsdata
@acsdata 2 года назад
It depends on if the damaged area of the platter contains any system info. If the system area of the drive...which is like the hard drives mini operating system...becomes unreadable, in nearly all cases that keeps the data from being accessible even if the remaining platter surfaces are pristine. However, if the system area can be read, and there's just a small area of damage on one surface, then there's a chance that 50% or maybe even more than 50% of the data can be recovered.

@acsdata

+Oscar Gomez Shock resistant as in, they handle drops and falls well...or do you mean like an over-voltage?
@NelsonBigGunP200Fan
@NelsonBigGunP200Fan 8 лет назад
+Oscar Gomez no mechanical hard drive is shock resistant, they are meant to be mounted in a secure place inside the PC and not be moved around.. if you want shock resistance get a SSD. the heads ride SO close to the media that a human hair can cause a crash.

What is the point in charging a customer for an opened drive, when a drive could have simply been opened just for the purpose of doing a quick visual inspection?
@acsdata
@acsdata 8 лет назад
There are issues with dust contamination that come into play which is the biggest headache, head alignment issues on some Western Digital drives, and also just not knowing what recovery attempts were made. Very seldom do we get drives in where someone just opened it to take a peek.
@ubreakitirepairit3569
@ubreakitirepairit3569 8 лет назад
+ACS Data Recovery I opened my drive just to take a peak. It was more so just to see if there was any physical damage to the platters. Closed it back up and left it alone.
@acsdata
@acsdata 8 лет назад
Like I said, it just depends on the particular configuration of the drive and how contaminated the drive is. Some drives don't have the heads anchored to the drive chassis, and the case cover actually determines the initial head/track alignment. We have a tool that allows us to measure and then regain that alignment very close to what it was originally. Just saves us a little time. Also, even dust you can't see can have a big impact on the internal components of the drive. You can see a pretty decent illustration here... acsdata.com/data-recovery-3tb-seagate-hard-drive/#Hard_Drive_Flying_Height

I have a question, I have a Transcend External HDD USB3.0 , and I kind of lost my temper few days ago, and Bang that HDD with my fist above it Once. Because the light indicator is on, but not blinking (which its supposed to be blinking if its detectable by the system, pretty sure that is just a bug can be solved by restarting my laptop which i normally do and it will work fine), But just this once, i made that stupid mistake to bang it which I regret. But i never expected it to get damage as the Transcend HDD comes with the protection cover. Right after I hit it, the light indicator is still on, but there's no blinking. & so I plugged it out, and connected it again, and Now, the light indicator no longer even blinks, however, there is the Clicking sound which can be heard for about 3 seconds. So in this case, Is it still fixable?

That's fair. My hd failed last week from jolting my computer, it makes the click sound of the heads going back and forth and then stops. As a poor person I can't justify the cost to try and get data back, I don't think I had critical data, just files and pictures that I will miss.

would there be literally any data left? for instance lets say that the NSA gets ahold of this particular drive. might they be able to use advanced technologies to extract any data off the drives? are there some really advanced techniques that even a company like yours isnt equipped to deal with? might one be able to look under an electron microscope and literally read off the ones and zeros off a drive (assuming manpower and money is no object)
@acsdata
@acsdata 7 лет назад
Imagine writing your name on a piece of wood. Now imagine sanding it off. That is pretty much what happens in a situation like this. The magnetic substrate...the actual coating that holds the 1's and 0's...has been wiped from the platter surface. Could there be some areas of errant good data here and there? You might find some fragments under an electron microscope, but nothing that would make up any usable data.
