At what point should he have then? He was given four years. Zero divisional or playoff wins. Only five wins against teams with a winning record. Caldwell was trash at Wake Forest, he bombed out of Indy once Peyton went down and he never coached the Lions to any success. This idea that we should be okay with .500 mediocrity is such a losers mentality. It's the main reason we've been a garbage franchise for 60 years.

Steve Kerr is a great and resourceful coach. He put himself in the best position any new coach could have asked for and he thrived. He knew he was getting that squad and he know he could make help them win and he did, again and again. Patricia is NOT EVEN CLOSE to Steve Kerr on any level of coaching. I love the Lions and I have as long as I can remember. My grandfather doesn't miss a home game and only has a few stadiums left to see them play in throughout the country on his bucket list. Patricia tried rebuilding a team that was already built to win just so he could have control. So he could show he is alpha. Any successful man or woman in a leadership position has this variable in common, they do not have to remind or show or flex on their crew that they are in charge. Any King that has to say "I AM THE KING" is no king at all. Tywin Lannister by rights of George RR Martin taught us that. Now Patricia has set us up for a rebuild if we cannot turn this thing around within the next 3-4 games. Well joke is on him because in the NFL climate YOU GET FIRED FOR LOSING (or in Coach Caldwell's case, for winning "only" 9 games). Matthew will not stick around, count on that. We were supposed to win the North his first year coaching. Coach Caldwell gave me some of the best seasons as Lions fans. Any yall know, we won that playoff game in Dallas. I still think had the PI penalty stood Caldwell may still be our coach today. Holler if you hear me.

Also, imagine being up by 2 scores at the beginning of many games only to have your defense collapse at the end, Matt Patricia is a “defensive mastermind” yet his team can’t hold a lead to save his life. Adam Gase is an “offensive mastermind” yet just runs countless bubble screens, runs up the middle, and short passing concepts that never works. Why does it seems like Black coaches become successful and put their teams on a good track, but owners always feel that a ‘bigger name’ White coach can somehow take their teams to another level? I’ve seen it happened to Tony Dungy with the Bucs; with Jon Gruden winning a Super Bowl with the team he created a year after he was fired, but fell off afterwards. Seen it happened to Lovie Smith with the Bears. He leads them to a Super Bowl, had decent seasons afterwards, and then was fired and the Bears hadn’t been the same since. And also Caldwell with the Lions got screwed over by the next ‘great White hope’ in Patricia. The only Black coach who haven’t suffered that same fate is Mike Tomlin. That’s because he lucked out by working for an organization that believes in stability and have never fallen for those ‘win quick schemes’. Tomlin has coached the Steelers for 15 years and have never had a losing record. More Black coaches can achieve that level of success if given the opportunity,but most will never have that opportunity as long as owners remain impatient and continue to fall back to what makes them comfortable.

Greg O'Leary they played a bend but don’t break defense overall that focused on limiting a team to 20 pts or less and win the turnover battle. This is why Stafford had low ints during Caldwell’s tenure. The defense wasn’t a shutdown def but they held teams enough to keep the game competitive. The problem was the offense started very slooowly and never scored enough pts and weren’t explosive enough. I agree about Ron Prince, but I think the OCs also called horrible plays. Greg O'Leary I just looked at the stats and yes they gave up pts but remember, we never could rush the ball either. Only 2 games with 100 yards of rushing. Rushing and controlling clock helps def too and they were horrible at it for years. I still think it falls on the OCs and Ron to some degree. I don’t think we had any type of creativity in the run game. Look at KC, notice how every play theres like 3 options the defense has to watch out for? Nope, not with the lions we line up and run simple high school plays. We can point fingers all day doing this, bottom line is Patricia needs to go lol

Joe I’m not saying Patricia needs to stay at all. He needs to get canned. Caldwell was supposed to be an offense coach and his Lions teams couldn’t run the ball. Feel free to see how bad Caldwell’s buddy Ron Prince’s career was and how he was finally tossed out of football for good. Keeping Prince was Caldwell’s bad choice. One of many.

As a lifelong Lions fan....Bob Quinn and Matt Patricia need a bus ticket out of town, ASAP! Coach Caldwell was a leader of men as HC of the Detroit Lions. The players loved playing for Coach Caldwell. Coach Caldwell went 36-28 in four seasons, had three winning seasons, and two playoff appearances. We all know the Lions got HOSED in Dallas on that bogus pick up the flag where three fouls occurred on the same play late in the WC playoff game with the Lions leading and driving to score. The NFL apologizing to the Lions after the loss...bunch of B.S.! Coach Caldwell handled that situation with dignity and class, even though it had to be eating him up inside. The knock on the Lions and Coach Caldwell was that they couldn't beat teams with a winning record and couldn't win the NFC North, but to fire a respected man like Coach Caldwell, and replace him with this HOT MESS OF A DUMPSTER FIRE in Coach Matt Patricia, who had absolute no Head Coaching experience whatsoever, is now completely laughable and sad at the same time. Matt Patricia is 10-25-1 as the Lions Head Coach. That is three losses away from what Coach Caldwell lost in his tenure. Patricia would have to go 26-2 over that span...not gonna happen! And for him to point fingers at everybody else and not look directly into the mirror to see what the problem actually is, is pathetic! The only difference is, is when the Scarecrow in "The Wizard of OZ" pointed fingers in the opposite direction to chose what road to go down, he actually did have a brain all along...
@GulNadar

Comparing coaches is stupid. Caldwell was mediocre at best and out coached by better coaches. Worse his respect from his coaches and players lead to his demise. His coaches were bad. His defense was bad. The players didn’t care if they lost to a better team because Caldwell was nice to them.
