I hated him during the high school seasons, but I feel like he redeemed himself in the adult seasons. I liked how he saved Jamie when he was kidnapped by the crazy nanny, found out the truth when the woman who claimed Nathan was the father of her unborn child was on his show, and when he saved Nathan when he was kidnapped.
Kind of like David Brent on The Office (UK). He's homophobic, racist, sexist, he causes trouble for folks and doesn't take responsibility for what he does. He gets a redundancy package ie He's Fired and he all but begs for his job back. Even after three Years he still goes to The Office because it's the only real source of comfort and self worth.
Exactly. From season 1 to season 9 his acting was amazing. Dan's character was that we all should hate him and his acting justified that. But this scene is epic ❤️❤️❤️
This might be an unpopular opinion but I’m happy that Lucas and Karen didn’t come. It’s much more realistic that Lucas couldn’t forgive Dan and refused to come see him one last time. Remember, Dan abandoned Karen and Lucas from the start. He was never a father to him. Aside from some fleeting moments, Lucas never felt fatherly love from Dan, love that Nathan has gotten and felt from Dan. But Keith gave unconditional love to Lucas and Karen from the day Lucas was born and even before that. Keith was Lucas’ dad and the father of his sister. His sister will never know her dad because of Dan. People might say well it might give him closure. Sometimes you just don’t want or need that closure. And Dan really doesn’t deserve that closure from Lucas or Karen for the way he has hurt them. What hurts more than anger and hatred to someone? Utter indifference to their life and that’s what Lucas has towards Dan and in a way, that’s his closure. You can’t expect someone to want to see a man who killed their dad, let alone forgive him, regardless of his motivations or acts of kindness afterwards.
Dan did a lot of bad things but also there were times he did come around to show their was good in him. He and Keith were never close and despite him being jealous of his brother he always had love for him. Lucas was very lucky to have Keith and Nathan was also lucky he had his father. Remember everything had so much to do with Basketball and that is the curse of the Scott name. Lucas and Nathan both had a piece of Dan in them because of basketball as both Karen and Deb were against it as they saw how much it could change someone as it did with Dan. I will say that Dan really did make Nathan the best basketball player he could be as him being his son, same for Lucas it was in their blood. Dan did finally show a change of heart in the end as he tried so hard to make things right showing he had regrets for killing Keith and in the end he was finally forgiven by not only his son but his brother as well who knew he was in a very dark place that made him the person he was.
It still would've been nice and a good thing to have Lucas and Karen and payton hear this conversation though. Because i think it would've helped them get closure about why he killed keith and helped them let go of some of the anger towards dan. And help them to be able to move on with their lives without having that anger / heavy cloud around them. Also by them coming to Dan's funeral would've been to show support to nathan and deb and other family members and friends.
This Moment I swear... Just seeing and hearing Nathan said that Dan doesn't have to apologize to him & he loves him. I swear Dan's reaction to this.... 😭😭😭 Then they played the Game with no scores, no rules... just a great moment between a father and son! 🖤🥺💔
I mean, you can’t even ask for a better closing scene from these to watch this episode for the first time today as I am closing on the show and as a grown man, this made me tear up! Dan Scott, one of the most evil twisted villains I’ve ever seen on the TV come to some type of redemption at the end was truly beautiful and when he starts to cry and says I’m sorry and his voice pitched I mean that got to me brilliant acting by Paul’s It was a great ending to a character
The Courtyard has so much History in The Scott Family. It was there that Lucas played Ball before joining the team, also it was where Nathan & Lucas played against each other. Also if Lucas washed his hands of Dan, you can't blame him, he was a bully, cruel and insensitive. Also Dan "Hated" Lucas because he knew that Lucas saw through him and all of the bad things he did.
The whole shame of it all is Dan and Lucas were finally getting as father and son before Lucas discovered Dan shot Uncle Keith. The man who was more of a father to him than his biological one.
No, in this episode Dan asked if Lucas was coming and Nathan said no. Dan then said he could understand how he feels because he wasn’t there for his life so he couldn’t be mad at him for not being there for his death. Also Lucas did come on the show to watch his niece and nephew after Nathan got kidnapped.
Nathan: Dad, why does this have to be so difficult? You're my father so I should love you but I spent so much of my life hating you. Dan: I was a terrible father. I know that. Nathan: You know, I can justify a lot of the screwed up things you've done. You bullied me because you wanted to make me tough. You tried to ruin my marriage because you wanted me to have a career. You even burned down your diner because you wanted to see me again. But I can't understand how you can murder your own brother. And I'm worried, when you're gone that's all I'll remember, and still hate you for it. Dan: You should hate me for it. Nathan: So why did you do it? Dan: I was always jealous of Keith. Even when we were kids. I was athletic, popular, all the things that he wasn't, but still, I was jealous of him. And people were drawn to Keith, and I hated him for it. Nathan: So you shot him because people liked him more? Dan: The day I shot Keith I was in a dark place. I was convinced that he tried to kill me, I had lost you, divorced your mom, my life was spiraling downwards and meanwhile Keith was building a new life with my high school sweat-heart and the child I'd abandoned. Every time I looked at him I felt I like I was punched in the gut. Nathan: So what happened in that hallway? Dan: Keith wanted to go into the school to save that kid, so I let him go, hoping he'd get shot. Let him be the hero, as long as he was a dead hero. And then I thought, why should he be the hero, when it could be me? So I followed him in. Jimmy was crying and Keith was telling him, it gets better, that pain in your heart, that voice in your head that tells ya there's no way out, it's wrong. It gets better. And I felt like he was talking to me. And in that moment, maybe the most heroic, kindest moment of my big brothers life, I hated him. I hated him more than anyone, or anything. Because nothing had gotten better. That pain was still in my heart. That voice in my head saying there's no way out was right! And he was standing there, lying to me! And after Jimmy died, I picked up the gun and aimed it at Keith, and he looked at me, and all I could think of was how everything that had gone wrong in my life was his fault. And it wasn't going to get better until he was gone. Just pull the trigger and it all ends. So I pulled that trigger. And It didn't end! It got worse. I'm so sorry. I'm so sorry. I'm so sorry. [Dan breaks down crying] Nathan: There are a lot of people you need to say I'm sorry to, but I'm not one of them. I wouldn't be where I am if it wasn't for you. My career, my family, my life. No matter what you've done, you're still my father. My father, and I love you. Dan: Oh Nathan, I love you too. Dan: You know, we never got a chance to play a game together on the river court. How bout it? Nathan: What do you want to play to? Dan: Let's not keep score. For once, lets just play to play.
Nathan had the talk with Dan, but his father imagined it happened on the river court in his delirium. It is debatable if Nathan had the "match" with Dan. I'd like to think that at that point Dan had closed his eyes and dreamed this part himself right before his heart gave out.
Dan had no right to get upset that his Lucas's Mother chose to be with Keith, he made his choice so let him live with it. Also remember when on Degrassi: The Next Generation Shane McKay came to see Spike and how "upset" he was that Spike married Snake. In the Old School Book, he always looked at Snake as one of The "Cool Kids", along with Joey Jeremiah, and Derek Wheeler aka Wheels.
Lucas was always Dan's Silent Shame and I bet my bottom dollar that Dan's Father was very angry at what he did. Also he was angry that Keith was playing "Father Figure" to Lucas and that Keith had manned up where he didn't.
If I was Lucas and I was there With my brother and the dad that never bothered to reach out to me and killed my uncle who was more of a dad to me ,I would have forgiven him for abandoning me and my mum but never for killing Keith.
I really wish they had Chad in this scene, I think Lucas should know the truth as well so he too could’ve had it in his heart to forgive his father for everything.
He shouldn’t have to. I don’t get you guy’s cringey unrealistic fantasy about Lucas forgiving Dan for abandoning him and his mom. And killing the only man Lucas seen as a father aka his own brother. in the last 4 seasons(5-9) dan has changed I’ll admit. He’s been better. during the high school seasons I wished he would die so many times. And when he actually did die it was sad. But I doubt Lucas gives 2 fucks about Dan and forgiving him. If he wanted the truth nathan could’ve told him.
What did Dan ever do for Lucas to deserve forgiveness? Dan saved Nathan’s life and the life of his son. The best thing Dan did for Lucas was leave him alone.
Makes me reliaze how the nutcase process tech at my job hates me. He makes more money and drives a good car, but screams my name in anger a lot. I hope he doesn't shoot me to death. LOL.
Honeslty if you think about it, Deb is the terrible parent shes worse then Dan. Dan's my fav btw, but honestly any person who chooses drugs over a person especially your kid that's just disrespectful and rude and just a bad parent. Dan may not be the greatest father but hes a good person and definitely my favorkte person on the show hoenslty. I'm only on seasom 4 but I've watched RU-vid videos of him and Jamie and I gotta say, Dan truly cares for people he just doesnt wanna show it or when he tries to no one wants to see it.
This would have been a better ending if Karen and lucas came to the hospital and they forgave him too and in this sequence have Nathan dan and Lucas play eachother one time.
Nathan was an ungrateful little bastard. How could he treat Deb better than Dan? If Deb had admitted what she did, Keith would still be alive. Keith got shot because Deb tried to murder Dan by burning him alive and then lacked the fortitude to admit to the police what she did and pay her debt to society. It looked like Keith had been the one who tried to burn Dan alive, so naturally Dan wanted vengeance. When Dan realized he'd shot the wrong person, he turned himself in and served a prison sentence. He wanted to pay his debt to society and he did. Voluntarily. Deb's sickness and her cowardice kept her from doing the same, from turning herself in for attempted murder. She's a vile, trashy woman but she is Nathan's mother so even after Dan found out she was the one who tried to murder him, he saved Deb's life anyway when she tried to overdose on pills. Then Nathan's son got kidnapped. Nathan couldn't find him to rescue him but Dan could and did. How did Nathan show his gratitude? He punched Dan in the face. It's bad enough he wouldn't show some gratitude, but it gets worse. He didn't punch him alone; he needed help. Nathan and his brother assaulted Dan together because neither was man enough to fight Dan one on one. Then the woman who kidnapped Nathan's son tried to kill both Nathan's son and Nathan's wife with an axe. So once again Dan came to the rescue and shot the woman, saving Nathan's son's life and Nathan's wife's life in the process. Surely you'd think Nathan would be grateful by now and forgive Dan, right? By then Dan had saved 4 lives. He saved Nathan's brother's life, saved Nathan's son's life, saved Nathan's wife's life, and saved Nathan's mother's life. Of course he'd already served his prison sentence after voluntarily turning himself in to the police. Surely that along with saving 4 lives - Nathan's entire family - would be enough for Nathan to forgive Dan. Except it wasn't. Apparently in Nathan's twisted little mind, Keith's life was more valuable than the lives of his wife, his son, his mother and his brother combined because they would all have been dead if it hadn't been for Dan's heroic actions. Nathan defines the term "ungrateful bastard." So Dan literally took a bullet to save Nathan's life, choosing to use his own body as a shield to save his son . No matter how badly Dan Scott was treated by his son, he kept doing the righteous thing..
we as the audience gets to see more of what is going on in everyone's life, if you were to watch the series in nathan's perspective, you would see dan as a tyrant, a bully, a manipulative abuser, pathological liar and a murderer. He doesnt know about the fire that was started by deb was actually to kill dan, and nathan did actually stand by dan when everyone was already believing that dan was the one who killed keith, he went to the beach house to confront dan, saying that he believed dan had changed and everyone is wrong, look at him in the eye and say they are wrong, and he is ready to stand by Dan's side. Until dan actually admitted that they are right, nathan is crushed because he couldnt believe that his father would actually murder not a random guy, BUT his own brother, he was that bad of a human being in his eyes, and he wanted nothing to do with him from then onwards like he says the day keith died is the day dan died as well. the kidnapping of jamie, we knew what dan is doing, we knew he is already trying to be a better person, but in nathan's perspective , he didnt see all that, only the audience did, so when he found out dan is nearby his son, in his head he only knew a murderer who has the guts to murder his own family is near his family, so thats why he gets so defensive all the time, and at first thought he assumed it was dan who kidnap jamie hence he immediately attacked dan with lucas . I see nathan being grateful by then after he knew he saved jamie and haley , because he did let dan spend time with jamie, but he doesnt want anymore connection with dan because he is still a murderer , its not something you can take back, and especially a murder of his own family member. Imagine if a good friend or a family member of your own did something bad like murder or rape, to someone you cherish like a brother or sister , mother or father, and after serving prison sentence and tries to approach you for forgiveness, it wouldnt be easy to just forgive him or her, even thought he or she saved my life , its just a scar that will always be there, and the show did say, what he did, will always remains there, dan could never take it back. Also nathan did finally forgive dan here, this time he truly believes he is a change man, the father that puts family and friends first. And he finally asked what happen in the hall way, to really understand why he did it.
@@kaitodaiki65 You make some good points regarding the audience knows more than Nathan. However, Nathan did know Deb tried to kill Dan. She admitted this to Nathan and within 5 minutes he was hugging her. Why does Deb get a free pass for trying to burn a man alive, not just any man, but Nathan's own father? If she had admitted what she'd done and taken the punishment she had coming to her, the way Dan did, then Keith would still be alive. Deb let Keith take the heat for what she did because she didn't have the self accountability to own up to it and turn herself in.
@@KennyKendall2001 deb didnt knew dan killed keith. She only knew that he mistook keith wanted to kill him then she admitted to him it was her who burn the dealership. This is when dan knew he killed the wrong person and started crying infront of keith grave also feeling guilty. Until lucas told deb that dan killed keith, only then deb started to feel the guilt, and like dan says she loaded the gun. It was too late either way, because they all found out after keith's death, keith death is unavoidable. no matter how, it was dan who killed keith due to the jealousy of his older brother who had everything, and he himself realise it as he started to turn over a new leaf, and he told deb to stop blaming her self, because in the end it was him who killed keith not deb. For nathan's case he probably understand why she wanted to kill him, i think most of everyone in 3 hill wanted dan dead or maybe just gone from 3 hill. And he probably understand she will carry the guilt of "loading" the gun and indirectly causing keith's death, so he hugs her. growing up deb although is still a somewhat terrible mom, but she isnt dan who constantly mess up people's life so nathan always have a soft spot for deb instead of dan.

The point I was making when I mentioned that Nathan knew Deb had tried to murder his father is that he forgave her within a few minutes. Yet no matter what Dan did to atone for his sin, no matter how many heroic things he did - rescuing Jamie from being kidnapped, saving Deb's life when she tried to overdose (Dan saved her even knowing she had tried to kill him), saving the lives of Nathan's wife and son from the axe wielding nanny Carrie, as well as having the honesty to turn himself in to the police for shooting Keith and serving his prison sentence - none of that was ever enough for Nathan. In comparison, what great things did Deb do after her attempted murder of Dan to show that she was giving her utmost effort to better herself and become a good woman? Actually several people knew that Deb had been the one who poisoned Dan and then set his dealership on fire so that he would burn to death and they all protected her. Keith himself knew what Deb did. Karen knew as well. Keith's death was very avoidable. Had Deb had the honesty and the courage to turn herself in to the police and accept the punishment for her crime, Keith would still be alive. Had even one of the people who knew Deb had been the one guilty of attempting to murder Dan turned her in to the police, Keith would still be alive. When a person knows that someone attempted to murder someone and that person does nothing, that makes that person an accomplice to the crime. It's called aiding and abetting and it's a felony.
Dan Scott did a lot of bad things, but he also did some good things. I know he saved four lives, and he even died to save Nathan’s! I so remember that Deb is the one who tried to burn in the dealership, that’s one reason why Keith died. The other reason is because Keith slept with Deb, that’s another reason why Keith ended up dead and Lucas found out about it. So to get his revenge on Keith, he set him up with a woman named Jules to break his heart. He really chastatied Keith by letting him that there was no way Dan Scott was going to take that lying down.
