This video is Part 1 of a 3 part series on the disassembly, refresh/rebuild of a Dana 60 king pin front differential from a 1990 F350. We cover things such as removal of the carrier, removal of the pinion gear, removal of the pinion seal, marking the pinion, pinion nut, and axle yoke to ensure proper reassembly with correct pre-load, removal of the inner axle seals, and removing paint from the housing in preparation for a fresh coat of new paint.
This video is also Episode 7 for Project Brutus, our 1987 F350 crew cab diesel dually field find that's being converted to 4WD.
Please do me a favor and like the video and subscribe to the channel!
Thanks, Scott

I bought a matched set out of a 95. This helps solidify my decision to Do it myself. going in my 93 F250, Going from 3:55s (open rear diff) to 4:10 (LSD in rear). It's only got the 351W We've had the truck for 8 years, paid 4K for her. New trucks are so expensive so we're going to put some money and love into this one instead.

Grape Ape - if you have a matched set, it makes sense to swap to SD axles. The 4.10 gears will help your 351W, too, of course. Thanks for the comment, Scott

Fantastic work Scott! Your attention to detail and willing to go the extra mile will pay off big time when if comes time to bolt it all up! I would’ve just rattle canned it and called it a day🤣. The fact that it’s a king pin rather than a ball joint Dana 60 is another cool feature. Looking forward to the next episode, take care👍

Thanks, YDOC! It took waaayyy too long to strip off all the old paint, but I prefer to clean stuff completely when I can, especially since it often shows damage that would have been hidden otherwise.

Excellent video, I'm working on a 97 f350 that is also in the process of 4wd swap and swapping out the gas for a 7.3. I have the same axle so this will be nice to know what im getting myself into

That's great that you were able to find a kingpin 60 for the front. That truck is going to be quite heavy in the front when it's all put back together. Only thing I would have done is checked the backlash on the gears to verify when it goes back together. I'm sure it will be fine though. Most of these axles never really got used too much unless it's winter time or when you really need 4x4 offroad. When I bought my D60 I think I paid $1200 in CA but it already had the 1.5" 35 spline stub shaft ungrade done with the matching Warn Hubs. Good luck dude and keep the content flowing!

Yes, she's going to be really heavy in the front when it's all said and done! That's why I went with the stiffest X code Super Duty springs. Understand your comment on the backlash; I don't think this diff was abused much, so hopefully I'll be good. Thanks!

Hi Scott! Awesome build. I have a 1986 F350 CCLB I restored this winter. Any chance you can link the cover you have? Or at least provide the company name? Currently mine is garage held but I'm looking for options and have yet to find a long enough cover.

Hi DDMTB - It's a Budge car cover that I bought from Amazon - here's the link - www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005UEL6FY/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Thanks for the input! Scott

Good job I will have to do that to my truck, it says it's got 74 thousand miles but I don't know if it ha 174 thousand or 274 thousand, the cluster dosent show past 99 thousand miles.

Yep, same with mine. Crazy that Ford wouldn't put an extra digit on the odometer, especially since these engines will easily run for 500k miles.
