Detroit emcee Danny Brown returns after a three year absence with his latest album Atrocity Exhibition. Atrocity Exhibition is his fourth album and was released on September 30, 2016 by Warp Records. Paul White serves as the primary producer but the album also has beats by Black Milk, Alchemist, Petite Noir, Evian Christ, and Playa Haze. Kendrick Lamar, Ab-Soul, Earl Sweatshirt, B-Real, Kelela, and Petite Noir all make guest appearances. Here are our thoughts on Danny's new work.

Prince G-MO Excited for King Push because the Prelude was so dope, but Layers was cool to me, not AOTY material but a good project. But when it comes to boundary pushing hip hop and execution in experimentation, Danny got it with this one, but hey it's just my opinion.

Danny grew up playing the trumpet and his style and voice resembles that of a trumpet solo. I get that some cant vibe with Danny's delivery, but his authenticity is what makes him as an artist. Danny is a genius IMO

The "dance in the water and not get wet" line is a reference to drug use and the risks associated with it. Danny is saying that he is using these hard drugs (dancing in the water) but not suffering from the problems that could come with it (getting wet).

Someone said one time to listen to Danny's albums like a story where the high voice is him when he's high and happy, and then his normal voice is him after he's come back down and his depression has started consuming him again, and I feel like this album really benefits from listening from that perspective, it really helps paint a picture of just how stuck he is in this endless loop of getting high to escape his depression and anxiety, but then coming back down and being worse than ever, and having no other way to remedy it than just repeating the cycle. I also feel like it's really beneficial to understanding the album to read Danny's depressed/anxious/suicidal breakdown that he had on Twitter a couple years back, it really helps to paint a picture of the kind of dark stuff that's going on in his head.

k1dkur0 As someone who likes both, I totally get it. I absolutely can understand anyone thinking it's annoying. what it adds though is the charisma and energy, it's not really his high pitch voice on purpose, it's just when he's yelling on the track with passion, he sounds like that. in his more subdued tracks where he's not exploding he sounds like another person.

Hip-hop album of the decade so far. Squeaks past RtJ2. This shit is insanely inventive. He made a true sequel to XXX. This is Mania: the Album. Danny sounds like some demented carnival barker on "Ain't It Funny"... that Alchemist beat on "White Lines"... the mixture of post-punk and Detroit techno... I could go on all day. I agree with Beezy and Myke on this one. And I didn't even catch that "B.O.B." reference... but it makes perfect sense. Look at Dilla's "Donuts" turning 10 the same year that another Detroit artist drops this album; "Atrocity Exhibition" has me excited for hip-hop's future.

This album is the only album release of September that went above and beyond and surpassed my expectations. Travis Scott - Mediocre Mac Miller - underwhelming Vince Staples - forgettable Mick Jenkins - eh Isaiah Rashad - Cool But this album here is Amazing, With a fucking capital A my nigga.

I dont see how one can hate Thug's voice but love Danny's voice
@LookingForAName...
@LookingForAName... 7 лет назад
Sixth Man Q Young Thug's voice is modified as fuck, while Danny's is pretty raw. Most importantly, we can't understand what the fuck Young Thug says in his songs, which is the main criticism thrown at him, not his voice.
@Tullekunstner
@Tullekunstner 7 лет назад
It's not really hard to understand. Their voices are different, so some might like one and dislike the other. Personally I enjoy both artists, even if I think Danny is far and beyond the better rapper (and artist) of the two.

@christophercaldwell5093
@christophercaldwell5093 7 лет назад
On songs like "LifeStyle" Thug sounds like a balloon leaking with his high pitcheness. Danny Brown's voice is based off Cypress Hill and is much more raw, hence why I prefer it.

Longtime viewer, loved to see y'all make the same connection from Three Stacks to Dany near the end of the video. This album has made me wonder if Danny Brown is the spiritual successor to Andre 3000, and I would love to see y'all tackle that question some day!

First off, the 'Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas' comparison you made Myke is incredible, I totally agree. This album is awesome, for sure in my top 5 of the year without a doubt. Easily my favorite Danny Brown album and I've been a fan since XXX, but this elevates him to the next level. If I was just a fan before because I thought he had two great albums, now he is one of my favorite artists with one of my favorite albums. Incredible, I saw this coming when I heard "When It Rain" and I think that song might be the best on the album, it is unlike anything I've ever heard. Which is something that can be said for much of this album. I think "Dance in the Water" is brilliant, even with the verses being sorta sparse, it is still one of my favorites. This whole album is unreal. "Ain't It Funny" "Golddust" and "White Lines" are so fucking dark, not that the rest of the album isn't but those really encapsulate it and mark what the album is when you get to them. Funny that they come after "Lost" like at that songs point Danny is just lost in his trip and "Ain't It Funny" is when he starts thinking about shit and shit goes downward fast, and the last five songs are kinda like aftermath mode where the biggest horrors are over but you are just melancholic dwelling in dread, but you roll up some weed at the end and say you'll live another day. Incredible fucking album, really, the sound and everything is so perfect, big shout out to the producers for this album. It is so outstanding, I'd say he for sure beat Death Grips on the experimental hip hop front this year. That is saying something because I friggin love Bottomless Pit. Great review guys.

We need a Danny brown and Andre 3000 album- Andre 3000 would be the "conscious" and Danny would be the "lifestyle". Andre would have the verses of "ok, I'm gonna quit" or "okay I'm stopping, if I don't I'm going to die" but Danny is the "I can't stop, I won't stop ," I feel it would be interesting.

To 'dance in the the water and not get wet' is an analogy for his life. He's playing with fire and not getting burnt, he's living his life in a way which could ruin him at any moment. It's one of my favourite songs on the album.

For me, the first time I heard the album, it clicked with "Ain't it Funny". Before that I was enjoying it, but it wasn't clicking with me, hearing him wilin' over those hardly even a beat hooked me, and from that point on everything sounded amazing. Pneumonia was also an instant love, weird ass trap is brilliant. Today I was enjoying, and then he says that André 3000 line and I needed to re listen to it. When it Rain was also one of my early favourites. Now it's one of my favourite albums of the year. Seriously sick what he did.

When it Rain was lowkey the best song on the album. Also, the sample, Pot Au Feu by Delia Derbyshire, is really good by itself.
